Sign Up for the Next Season of the X-Wing Vassal League!

By Earthworm, in X-Wing

“As heard on NOVA Squadron Radio!”

After a successful test season that began with 216 players from around the world, we’re excited to announce that we’re accepting signups for the first full season of the X-Wing Vassal League.

Further details on how to sign up are at our Reddit page.

What is this league all about?

This is a multi tiered league for playing X-wing over the VASSAL online client, and is open to players at every level from Paul Heaver (yes, he’s in it) to the newest beginners.

If you join, you’ll be in one of our Outer Rim divisions of about 10 new players from the same time zone. You’ll have two and a half months to play each member of your division (plus a player from each of the neighboring divisions) once. There is no set schedule- you can play your games whenever you and your opponent can find a time. This allows you to go on vacation or otherwise have a life during the season.

If you are one of the top players in your division, you advance to the Inner Rim divisions, where competition is a little tougher, for the next season. The top players from this division advance to the Core Worlds divisions, while the bottom players are relegated back down to the Outer Rim divisions. The overall league is a pyramid, with a wide base of players at the bottom advancing upward towards a small number of seats at the top where the world’s best online X-wing players will be.

Prizes are available for division winners at all levels, including tokens and templates from our Prize Sponsor, Team Covenant!

Again, for more details on how to sign up, the structure and rules of the league, how to play on Vassal and more, go to our info page at our Reddit page

Signups close April 1.

Is it simple to install? it seemed too complicated for me.

YES!

You install the Vassal Client first, and then the module for each game into that. More info on our intro page. and this tutorial page.

Some medical complications are preventing me from attending game nights as much as I'd like. Guess it's time. Anyone want to run me through a tutorial next week around 8:30 CST? I've played one game before, but it was wave 4 and it was TEDIOUS.

I got vassel and the Xwing module. now I just have to learn how to use it. can you play against an AI?

Edited by Sir Orrin

There is no AI, but there are a lot of other friendly players... more than ever! If you have a printer, I highly recommend printing out the notes part of the basic maneuvers and the craft status pages. You'll spend a lot of time doing those actions and over time if you learn the shortcuts the game can go much more quickly than the people that rely on right click interface for every little thing. Don't get me wrong, right click is awesome... just slows the game down. It does take a couple of games to get used to the UI and then more time to let it fade into the background. It is worth investing your time in learning the UI, especially if you are not able to play against folks regularly (like me due to no local store within 50+ miles). You'll still need your information, because the cards are blanked out to not violate EULA, but it works pretty well and allows you to play across the country, or even around the world.

Signups for the league will close on April 1.

I played in Season 0, having never played on Vassal before. It was pretty easy to learn, and I am really excited for season 1! Overall it has been a really fun experience.

Sounds great, and would love to join. It`s not easy to get to play X-Wing on a regular basis, so have looked at Vassal recently, and tested it out a little offline, so I think I have got a grasp on the basics. But could definitely need some hand-holding for a couple of games.

Current sign-up list (by Challonge name, note that there are some duplicates- some people REALLY want to play...)

This is really cool guys, I would say to everybody, sign up!

Yeah, I'm in. :)

As of Thursday morning, PDT, we're at 224 players signed up. (We started with 216 in our test season, so this is definite growth).

We'll continue to accept signups via the google form through April 1st.

I downloaded Vassel, but I havent even figured it out yet, and I don't want to sign up and not be able to play enough thereby messing people up. good luck to you all!

This including or excluding the duplicates? xD

I just went back and counted about 12, 13 duplicates in the case you haven't had the time to find them.

Start with the tutorial. Once you've got it installed, and have messed around with the ships offline a little, go online and just watch. You'll pick up most of what you need to know by watching games being played. The folks playing there are all really nice and helpful if you have any questions (just don't jump in at critical moments). You'll easily be ready by the time we run our next season after this one.

We trimmed the duplicates. And now it's 225.

(every time Kdubb says something snide, someone signs up for the league? Let it rip, man!) ;)

How long does this season last? I don't think I'll have the time to download Vassal, learn the system, and be ready to play by the 1st.

It sounds fun though.

I'm new too! maybe we could play each other!

I think I'm going to just learn how to play, and get good at it. I will be following how the tournament goes!

Season One (Our previous test season was 'Season Zero') will last approximately 2.5 months, so we'd start accepting season 2 signups sometime around mid- June.

See my notes above on starting with the tutorial. I felt confident to begin playing serious games after I'd played about 4 games online.

I only continue to mention it because I was one of the oafs who joined twice.

We're working on a variety of ways people can follow the league, including twitch commentary on some games.

Updated the list of players who have signed up through the Google form.

We're up to 252 players!

Signups close April 1.

Had a lot of fun playing! Looking forward to Season 1. :)

I'd recommend it, even for new Vassal players - the community is friendly, and will generally help you out.
