Which lieutenant packs to buy first?

By Braneric, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I've been away from the game for a while (I only have the base game) but my gaming group has expressed interest in it again. I know that lieutenant packs add a lot of options for the Overlord (which frankly should have been included from the start like Imperial Agendas in IA), but which one(s) should I get first? My initial thought was to get the villains form the base game but Splig, Alric Farrow and Zachareth are seemingly OOS everywhere so i'm stuck waiting for reprints.

You should wait for the reprints in my opinion. No much logic in buy other lts if you own just the core game. Unless you'll buy the expansions together.

Wouldn't it be better the other way around?

You can't use the Zachareth agent in the SR campaign for example... but you could use him in another campaign... isn't it the same for the Agents from the other campaigns?

(Although you could ignore the Agent card and play the plot deck without using it... since that would be allowed.)

Depends on what you want. If you want miniatures for your campaign, you want to buy the ones for your current campaign of course :)

Sorry, I am new to the game, but are all of the lieutenant tied to specific expansions/campaigns?

Yes. Every campaign (the base game and the expansions all have a (mini) campaign) features lieutenants in the story. The plot decks have a rule that forbids you to use the agents of that plot deck in that specific campaign. For example, you cannot summon the Splig agent in the Shadow Rune campaign, or Valyndra in the Lair of the Wyrm campaign. You can use the cards from the plot deck, that is fine. But the agent is forbidden.

Well, for the most Lieutenants you can only not summon them in Quests they appear as Lieutenant. For example you could play the agent Splig in any mission in Shadow Rune or Heir of Blood (the campaigns he appears in) except for missions in which he appears as a Lieutenant.

Some other agents are not allowed in a complete campaign. Zachareth is not allowed to be played in the campaign Shadow Rune for example.

Also, Splig appears in Labyrinth of Ruin as well! ;)

Lieutenant packs bring different strategies, not only the deck and the mini. I have divide them into three categories whenever I want to buy one of them:

1) The miniature

If you want to use the miniature because of its looking, then choosing and using the plot deck is useless. For example, I bought Queen Ariad beacuse it is a BIG SPIDER! muahahaha

2) The Plot Deck

Sometimes the mini isn’t everything, there are some Plot Decks that are worth buying. For example, Raythen’s plot deck is useful to counter in some way a hero class (the Treasure Hunter). In other cases, Valyndra’s plot deck rewards the use of large monsters, while Verminous rewards the use of small monsters. Zachareth’s deck plays with the rules by hitting the heroes when they buy their stuff. Therefore, you can see that it is not necessarily to buy them for the mini, the link in the post #2 will give you an analysis of them. In addition , I give you a link where you can read all the agents card effects (where it says Overlord Plot Decks).

3) The Agent

Well, the bosses. You want to play with them because of their utility. Well you need to think first of their cost (in order to play them you substitute your monsters) and their weakness (once they are killed, you need to earn them again or they can't be use in some campaign, as stated above). So, there are Agents that focus on combat: Queen Ariad (highest defense in the game), Gargan Mirklace (highest attack) or Skarn (resilent through healing process); others help other units: Ardus Ix'Erebus (a high command unit), Splig (a decoy command unit) or Rylan Olliven (a utility unit).

Splig appears in Lair of the Wyrm too! My favorite character in Descent lore (and he has awesome miniature!)

Yeah, I meant Shadow Rune and Heir of Blood only as example, because one of these is the campaign included in the box of the core game.
