cheat caught on video??????

By shotbyscott, in X-Wing

....if you're saying that we can never question whether or not someone might be cheating, that's a very foolish mentality.

On the contrary. Exercising restraint, even if you are convinced that someone cheated, is a very wise thing to do.

Exercising restraint, like the OP pretty much saying, "Hey, I think I spotted cheating on the part of this player at the 2:13 mark, could you guys verify this, and who should this go to if true?" not, "OMFG THIS GUY CHEATED BURN HIM, BURN HIM!!"

Right now, you're wrong and your side has always been wrong. Aside from comments that were plainly not serious, the people acting most irrationally in the thread were those trying to paint ANY accusation of cheating a witchhunt.

Rolling eyes at someone's thread about "This guy used loaded dice!!1!" is perfectly rational. It's hard to load dice and stupid obvious when it happens. But dial manipulation is an easy way to cheat, and this guy was blatantly doing just that.

Showcasing obvious cheats has a chilling effect on cheaters. What a cheater fears most isn't losing a game, it's being caught CHEATING at that game - if he's a cowardly type he fears being ostracized from the group, if he's a bold type he fears that his marks will catch on and he won't be able to cheat any more. Thinking that the other people in your circle know how to spot these kind of cheats will amplify that fear, and make them less likely to cheat.

What this guy said... :)

Actually, I don't think that it's a good idea to throw it out here as a point for discussion, and I see the argument of those who said that it is better to contact the TO and/or FFG.

So what you're saying is that if the thread creator was:

1) Unsure if this was cheating or not and wanted other eyes on it

2) Didn't want to hassle FFG if he was mistaken

3) Had no idea how to contact the TO because the game was weeks ago and no players were identified

4) Did not speak German to reach out to the community the cheat took place in

He shouldn't have said anything? Because all of those were the circumstances, and any two of those seem like good reasons to post on a forum for help.

No, I did not say any of those things.

But since FFG organized play apparently has a policy on (suspected) cheating, a serious allegation should not be a hassle for them.

Point is, if you're saying that we can never question whether or not someone might be cheating, that's a very foolish mentality.

Luckily, that's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying we need to be careful and measured about it, and still focus -- first and foremost -- on proper channels and an appropriate response.

Both cheating players have been scolded pretty badly in the German community due to their attempted cover-ups (and cheating of course).

It was quite a rough week - you might have heard, how we Germans sound in general, so think about how it might sound when we have in fact a real reason to be angry about!

Both cases are now in the righteous hands of FFG and can expect proper punishment for their actions.

There isn't much more to discuss about it. Let's move on...!

Temporary Banned list. Settled.

Wow, that was one of the most feeblest excuses for an excuse I've ever seen. This is such a #SorryNotSorry apology.

(1) I've never ever done it before or ever even thought of doing it before, it was this one and only time I was caught on camera!! (Yea, bull)

(2) I cheated but then I un-cheated by switching back to the perfect maneuver I had spun off of after my opponent did his move!! (Yea, bull)

You know why we can presume it's bull? Other than than it's not really logical and still refuses to accept anything but the most minor amount of responsibility for his action (which he still contends wasn't really cheating), he spent the first few days of this debacle being very adamant that he did not rotate his dials at all and that it was just a common nervous habit he has. Which immediately kills his credibility and calls his character and honesty into question.

You got busted for cheating at a near meaningless game making a mockery of everyone else's time and money, then you lied and denied, and even now when the evidence is overwhelmingly against you, you continue to still deny that you actually cheated in the end (since you "uncheated" before it mattered).

Yea, sorry but I don't have a single drop of sympathy for you. Well, SorryNotSorry... ;)

You have a poor character and weak judgment. I hope you learn from this experience and grow as a person, but I also hope you have the decency to never play X-Wing again after the sheer amount of disrespect and mockery you have made of the game and its community of individuals who had the misfortune to play with you.

....

This is the hardest thing to believe. Have the perfect counter-counter move all set up and ready to go and while it's happening you can't help but fiddle with it. Change it then change it back when you had no need to change it at all in the first place? Really?

And it turned out we were right. Its really lame to change your statement in such a situation, and to change it to "i wanted to turn it back"...that is internet suicide :D Well for me it was obvious, there were just no reason to hold the dial like that without changing it.
