How are you planning on using the Scum cloaking device?

By Chief Hugh, in X-Wing

Stygium Particle Accelerator is not Imperial Only. Boooosh.

It's also two points invested in something that might break the first time you use it. *sadtrombone*

And if you play this game you might lose. Who cares?! The cloaking device is a cool upgrade, not the ultimate power in the universe, but I suggest we use it all the same.

I'm going to put it on Guri to get her safely close to the action.

*shrug* I've spent more on one-use upgrades before. I've spent more on upgrades which never got used at all.

Hell, I've seen a HLC Outrider shot off the board in turn two, having fired once. That was fifty-something points of ship and upgrades which broke after the first time it was used.

Well for now there are only 6 ships that can take the cloaking device.

  • ScumZ-95 (Z-95 Headhunter)
  • ScumHawk (HWK-290)
  • Kihraxz Fighter
  • G1-A Starfighter
  • Star Viper* (with Virago Title Equipped)

So only one cloaking device and cloaking device provide a great deal of defense in terms of maneuverability and increased agility.

So the ship that could benefit the most from the extra mobility is the ScumHawk as it has the worst mobility out of the 5 ships. However it might be better to put it on a already mobile ship to make it a super mobile ship.

The ship that will benefit from the agility increase would no doubt be the Star Viper.

Maybe on a Binayre Pirate for a blocker. It's not an upgrade I'd put on a primary offense like Guri or Xizor since you can't decloak at will.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I don't think this is true.

You can spend the cloak token to decloak and using the Cloaking Device to do the cloaking action gives you the cloak token. (ref. Decloak and Cloak reference cards, both of which come with the MH expansion)

fixed

not that it doesn't increase agility, but the idea that increased agility results in anything but disappointment is false

it's a half-price temperamental engine upgrade. It will not take anyone anywhere near the realm of "survivable" unless they were already there (ala xizor) in which case it becomes redundant in that capacity

I'm going to try it but probably not competitively. Its just going to be too unreliable.

I was thinking about this build:

N'Dru Suhlak (17)
Lone Wolf (2)
Cluster Missiles (4)
Cloaking Device (2)
Guidance Chips (0)

Total: 25

Allows N'dru to haul butt across the board in one move. Hopefully to get into missile range and blow something up.

I think it'll be okay on the G1 with a Stealth Device. 4 Straight into a 4 dice cloak? Those are pretty okay odds considering I know another ship that can 4 straight on a white and then barrel roll... Chances are people will want to shoot that one more I'm thinkin'.

Also, you only roll for the cloak if you're using it, so maybe it will be more useful than people think? One guaranteed round sounds okay for 2 points though.

How many people wish they got two Cloaking Devices now though hey? Haha!

the G-1a is an interesting case because they named pilots might need it (makes you wonder why it comes in the same pack, eh :P?)

the named pilots are fairly expensive and hellish squishy, so the only way to keep them relevant is to have them flank in at an angle where the enemy cannot shoot them

cloak is perfect for that

havn't tried it yet, though. too interested in that tractor beam

With the Scum cloaking device, is this the only way to decloak? Meaning that there's times you want to decloak but you can't?

Cloaking Device:

Action: Perform a free cloak action. At the end of the each round, if you are cloaked, roll 1 attack dice. On a eye.png result, discard this card, then decloak or discard your cloak token.

you can't decloak if all possible decloak positions are blocked by obstacles/ships

you can decloak as normal under all other circumstances

the option to discard your cloak token is there in case you don't want to be forced into a decloak when the bull rng screws you over

I'm going to try it but probably not competitively. Its just going to be too unreliable.

He really, really wants Glitterstim for that combo though. Then he can close, lock, and shoot with maximum modification all in one turn. And he needs to be able to or he will die horribly.

Interesting, Thanks.

Of course there's an update to it on reference cards is what confused me with the Cloak being an action on the card rather it being added to the action bar say like Engine Upgrade. I'll need to check that out whenever I pick on up alongside a prototype Advance.

Might try it out on Guri then of you can decloak too.

Talonbane is the clear winner here with a potential 6 agility at range 3 (and probably an evade token). It also sets him up for a potential flanking shot early game via decloak + the amazing one hard. Makes his vulnerability on the approach less of a thing. The core problem is being blocked when he's up to his shenanigans as my PS 8 TIE list succeeded in doing (I <3 blocking with high PS ships).
