(yet another) Question about Duty

By kelpie, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Hi all

i know the rules about Duty: at start of each session me (the GM) rolls on "Duty Table" and see if a duty "trigger" and wich one

if one of them trigger, the PC whose duty is will get a bonus. Also, if during the session he will complete some "additional task", duty increase

now, to increase obligation (and thus their rank inside Alliance), they need to fullfill their duty.

but to fullfill one duty one has to

a) trigger his duty at the start of session, and

b) complete the "additional task" of the adventure in this specific section

But what happens if they complete the "additional task" while the duty is not triggered?

in many published adventure, like Perlemian Haul (the one on the corebook) or Operation Shadowpoint (the one freely downloadable from website, follow-up of Beginner Game) have specific section linked to specific duty. Ie, in the latter one there are event seeds connected to specific duty

But what if the PC will complete the section when duty is not triggered?

an easy example: part of the mission is tied to recruit more people in the alliance.

So far if PC will complete the part and successfully recruit people in the Alliance

a) if "recruitment" duty triggered, it increase

b) if "recruitment" does'nt trigger, it does'nt increase

c) if "recruitment" trigger in a different session (maybe the session before or the one after) nothing happen

that's right?

First time i read it i thought it was "per adventure"; in this way adding a specific duty part of the adventure was enough to give the player the opportunity to fullfill their duty. Before or later, they could go in this specific part of the adventure and then get the duty increase.

But reading it is "per session" will means they have to be very lucky:

first they need to roll duty

then they need to be in the exact specific part of the adventure where the duty will come in play

the oddities to increase the duty is veeeeeeeery tight!!

or i am wrong?

ps and how much duty increase when (if) fullfilled? reward section is pretty unclear about it...

how much do you give them? 5-10 points depending if it's an easy thing done by being lucky a couple of rolls or they had a full session of brillant roleplay just for it?

I don't know about it being mandatory that their Duty has to come up on the roll that session, in order to work on it. I think that's supposed to just mean elements of that Duty should be referenced in game? I honestly haven't read the Duty rules very deeply, or very recently. But I've always considered it like Obligation. Just because Obligation comes up, it doesn't require you to have a sidemission pop up for that Obligation. Maybe they just get a holovid from home, reminding them of their Family obligation. Or maybe they just are homesick, and they think about their Family, and thus suffer strain.

To me, Duty is the same way. If it comes up, there should be some reference to it, but if a player who's Duty didn't come up that session, ends up doing something that absolutely pushes their Duty agenda forward, I'm definitely going to reward them for it. I think if their Duty is rolled, they just get bonus reward right? I mean, like they get a communique from Rebel dispatch, about how their ships are taking heavy losses in a particular sector of space. IF the player happens to improve his Naval Superiority that session, by either taking out some of those ships, or maybe slicing into the Imperial network, and re-deploying some of that fleet to another sector, taking off pressure, he would get some extra Duty, because the issue was more pressing. But for me, any session, if any Duty bound player fulfills something for their Duty, I'm going to reward them for it. Roll or no roll.

We're actually going to be talking about Duty on the next episode of the Order 66 Podcast this Thursday night. Tune in, or download it after, and you may find some useful insight.

Really? Well, off to the archives I go!

Actually I can't find any new episode about Duty from that date listed. My iTunes isn't updating anything beyond the Grey Matters episode from the beginning of the month. Anyone else in the same situation or was the episode simply delayed for some reason?
