I Need a Storage Solution

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing

I have no way to store my X-Wing collection, and I'm getting the Ghost soon. I just put all my ships, in their awesome glory, on a high shelf away from the Jawas and Ewoks that live with me.

I'm going on a trip in June to see some family, and they asked me to bring my collection. I need a storage solution that is worthy. I must house the following:

Ghost

Millennium Falcon

Decimator

Firespray

Jumpmaster

HWK

K-Wing and a bunch of little ships.

The Ghost, obviously, is the biggest concern.

Any ideas?

What sort of budget are you looking at?

If money is not an issue, I just picked up Battlefoam's full-pluck version of their 1520 XL and can recommend it. Has a ton of storage space, is fully customizable for your collection, and runs cheaper than actually getting a custom bag made.

Plano, of course.

The answer is always Plano.

I like Plano for everything but have yet to figure out a good solution for ghost, falcon, or decimator. Looks like the big empty boxes work with some foam to keep things from rattling around.

The plano answer for the bigger ships is another answer: Dremel. I've had to slice up a few plano innards (5231 notably) to fit bigger ships. I always augment this with a thin layer of foam to keep the big ships from rattling around so much. Seems to work well!

I've been using Feldherr gear for a while now, and can't fault it in the least. I have their cardboard cases holding the ships in foam on my shelves, and a smaller bag that can hold three or four lists in the same foam trays, for easy transport to the store/tournaments. They're stellar quality.

For small ships, they have a universal shallow tray (perfect for X-wings, Y-wings, etc), and deep tray (TIE Fighters, B-wings, etc). For the medium ships (Starvipers, K-wings), and large, they have the silhouette cut into the foam really neatly.

Regarding the Ghost, I actually shot them a message last night asking when they'd have trays made up for the Ghost and Jumpmaster. They can't start development on them until they actually get models in their hands to work from, so they're estimating mid-April for that.

I don't care about the foam stuff. I think the X-Wing models are tough enough if they move a little, just as long as no one shakes the box!

I've found some of the bigger Plano stuff for my epic ships. I've gone one left over that I can probably fit the Ghost in. I keep all of these in a Star Wars box that my wife got me from Michael's for $15. It works great!

I don't have room for all my large based ships. I used to keep them in the top of my Plano 1337, but I have not enough room, now. I bought a plastic tool box from Walmart and keep them in there. I made those free little tuck boxes for them. I can probably put the Ghost in that with it's plastic case as I have a lot of room in that.

So, I lug around three freakin' boxes to carry all my X-wing stuff. I just don't have enough room. I need to shove off some Imperial stuff to make way for the TAP V1 now, as well. Ugh.

My buddy uses the Plano and keeps the ships in the plastic trays that they come in inside the Plano cases. Large ships too. Works well.

I have too many. :(

2nd Plano, but add a cheap duffel bag with lots of pockets.

For what its worth, I spoke with a Battle Foam rep, & their wave 8 options will be available next week. They also have a cool design-it-yourself tool in case you don't own 3 Firesprays, like these companies seem to think we all do.

This stanley case with removeable compartments seems good. Im gonna order one for my ghost and other large ships. $12 on amazon

It says the compartments are about 2" tall. Anyone know how tall the Ghost is?

Probably too tall, I'll test later. The lambda doesn't fit either, unless you don't mind the it being squeezed. Awesome cases nonetheless, though much more expensive in Canada. The Canadian tire knockoffs are not as sturdy and I'd assume the same goes for harbor freight's.

I was content to stick with Plano until the Ghost hit. There was simply no way it was going to fit in my case in its current configuration.

Someone show me your ghost storage solution, this thing is HUGE!

I use a Plano tackle box for most of my XWing stuff.

After cutting out various compartment walls I was able to fit the Decimator. However, the Bossk ship and the Ghost will NOT fit at all in this case (Although the Bossk ship will probably fit if it is disassembled). This is part of the reason I haven't even purchased Wave 7 or 8. The other part is I haven't been playing at all for a few months.

I tried measuring the Ghost, difficult with its shape, but looks like that turret on top makes it just over 2 inches high. Need a case that is about 2 1/4" I think. Anyone know for sure? - UGH!

I use this guy here for everything but my epic ships. Cut a single piece of foam for the top compartment to hold Ghost, Decimator, Shuttle, YV-666, YT-2400, and JM-5K. Have room on top of that for my token trays. Have the other (approx 80) ships in the bottom four trays with room for templates, asteroids, bases, etc.

Wave 9 might just exceed the storage capacity but it's going to be close.

I have the Plano 1374 and it's great for all my small based ships. I bought some of those deep Plano trays that are 3" or so. They hold my epic. For my large based ships, I just have a cheap $10 plastic tool box from Walmart. It now holds the Ghost, as well. I just left it in the plastic and put the whole thing in the tool box.

I went with the double deep Plano for th big ships.

It holds the Decimator, Hounds Tooth and Transport with ease. Since I seem to be getting them all I think there is room for my future purchases of the Rebel Cruiser, Imperial Raider and assault Carrier. With a bit more to grow.

I might end up with this for total storage.
