I Need a Storage Solution

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing

I wouldn't mind keeping all your stuff at my house ;)

I use this guy here for everything but my epic ships. Cut a single piece of foam for the top compartment to hold Ghost, Decimator, Shuttle, YV-666, YT-2400, and JM-5K. Have room on top of that for my token trays. Have the other (approx 80) ships in the bottom four trays with room for templates, asteroids, bases, etc.

Wave 9 might just exceed the storage capacity but it's going to be close.

Nice!

A little smaller version on amazon for a third of the price . This would work for me. Top compartment is 4.5" deep. Bottom two are 3"

I use a 1374 as well for everything but Epic. For Epic I have a Sterilite #1979 ornament box. http://www.sterilite.com/SelectProduct.html?id=842&ProductCategory=0&section=0 . However that is not going to work for the Raider. I'd like to have everything in one box. I'm thinking of getting Battlefoam Air or 1520 to ensure future compatibility and room to grow.

You would have to cut the dividers out. They do make one that is completely open. I use this one for another game with decks of cards the same size as upgrade cards.

Thank you very much for catching that! Good save.

I think the best one I've found (under $20) on Amazon is http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0010XFKF6/

It has adjustable dividers and deep enough to store the Ghost.

I managed to make the ghost fit in the Plano 5231 in the bottom compartment right hand side by laying the Ghost with bottom down and a slight twisted angle and positioning the turret in one of the gaps created by the dividers in the top section. Just works.

I just switched to one of these for each faction: http://amzn.to/22Y3Jh7 (don't buy on Amazon if you can - they're crazy overpriced for some reason). Was using Plano 5231s prior to that, but Wave VIII - especially the Ghost - finally made me pull the trigger on expanding.

The top section fits all of the small ships comfortably (the K-wing is the only ship I can't double up in one of the storage bins):

In the bottom, all of my Large ships (with stands and placards), templates, and tokens (with a drawer liner in the bottom to minimize sliding).

That looks awesome, but too spendy for me!

Hmmmm... that thing looks awesome, but I'm double clutching. Is it real hard to get the Ghost in? Are you concerned it will break?

I also have the Falcon, Decimator, and Firespray to get in there too. I'll be getting a Jumpmaster soon.

What are the model numbers on the trays that slide into that? The model numbers should be molded into the bottom of the trays.

By the way, I measured the Ghost and it is 2" tall, 6.5" long, and 5" wide.

I have too many. :(

I kind of like the Plano 3750s. Does anyone know if Plano has a tackle box that holds a few of those?

I actually have 2 of them and 2 1500 Pelican Cases (freebies from work). I keep all the models I am not using in the pull-and-pluck foam found in the pelican cases ( I don't recommend these because they are so expensive ).

The first of the plano's store my tokens, upgrade cards, dials, bases etc. The second I tailor as my travel case and keep everything I need to play 1-4 lists in, including ships. Right now I have all the tokens, templates, dials, half a dozen small base ships, the Ghost and a 2400 in it.

Duffle bag has proven a real boon as it lets me transport all of this with ease.

I like my Plano cases. I use their 3600 line, but if I were starting over I'd use their 3700 line (3700 has a double height case that would be perfect for things like the Hound's Tooth/Lambda). There is some cheap, closed cell foam that you can line the bottoms and tops with to make it really gentle on the minis.

Numerous people swear by Plano. I do not.

Numerous people swear by custom foam. I do not.

A battle foam bag and pick and pluck trays is infinitely configurable and only very rarely have I had to replace a tray for a new one. It has pockets of precisely the size you need for everything, and precisely where you need them. I have everything from wave 1-8 in mine, with multiples of almost everything. It looks nicer, is less unwieldy, and wastes significantly less space, with the added benefit of foam padding instead of hard walls.

You'll note there are a lot of people in this thread who say "I used to have (suchandsuch) Plano, now I have..." or something similar. Plano seems cheap. $20 or $30? Sure. Until the wave where you run out of room. Or the wave where a giant Ghost-like ship comes out. Then it's off to buy an entirely new case.

Why don't you like Plano? I'm just curious.

I've used the huge Plano case and love it. Yes, my collection is quite big now and I've had to expand into other storage solutions, but I still use my large Plano for most of my ships and accessories. I'd hate to go with anything else. I will say that I don't like the smaller Plano options. Don't bother with them. Just get the big suckers. You will fill it soon.

One of the aspects of foam of any type is that you are constantly needing to buy more trays and more bags and more everything. The costs for each tray and bags is usually beyond my budget. I've bought foam for other game systems and just found I spent so much money on trays that I didn't have much money left over for minis. Also, the bag I thought was big enough soon wasn't and a bigger or second bag just ends up costing so much more. I find the cost level to get in and keep using foam to be just more than I'm willing to pay. The models don't really need any extra protection.

I have no way to store my X-Wing collection, and I'm getting the Ghost soon. I just put all my ships, in their awesome glory, on a high shelf away from the Jawas and Ewoks that live with me.

I'm going on a trip in June to see some family, and they asked me to bring my collection. I need a storage solution that is worthy. I must house the following:

Ghost

Millennium Falcon

Decimator

Firespray

Jumpmaster

HWK

K-Wing and a bunch of little ships.

The Ghost, obviously, is the biggest concern.

Any ideas?

K-Wing

Slave 1

Decimator

Ghost

YT-1300

Jumpmasters

So 6 different half-Size Foams from Feldherr. so I guess an Individual Maxi Bag would fit your collection. Personally I would rather go with 2 Miniplus, which fit 3x50mm Foams from Feldherr each. The maxi is 180mm Full Size.

https://www.feldherr.net/feldherr-mini-plus-individual-case-14-cm-half-size-foam/a-49502/ <<< 32,39 USD

https://www.feldherr.net/feldherr-maxi-logo-individual-case-18-cm-full-size-foam/a-49557/ <<< 69,59 USD

One advantage of the maxi is that most likely two 35mm for 10 X-Wing Ships without base would most likely still fit, especially if you use them for your tokens and cards on top of your ships.

https://www.feldherr.net/hsbe035bo-foam-tray-for-10-star-wars-x-wing-star-ships/a-51752/

It's 5mm over the specs, but I doubt that this will be a problem … well you might need to order them separately and pay 10 bucks extra, but they should fit together with 6x50mm half-size ones into a Maxi-Bag.

edit: Oh, but the ghost foam is still in prototype stage, should be ready soon, but it is not out yet, so if your trip is soon, you might use one of those pick and plug foams: https://www.feldherr.net/feldherr-foam-trays/feldherr-half-size-foamtrays/hs050rs-50-mm-2-inch-figure-foam-tray-half-size-raster-self-adhesive/a-43658/

Ugh....so expensive. I think I paid $30 for my big Plano and it holds over 50 ships and all my extra stuff.

Well, it's two bags and 6 foam trays for 64,78 USD, stores 6 large and about small ~30 ships with base. Yeah, it is a little bit more expensive, but at the other hand you store about 600 dollar worth of ships within it and unlike in planos you do not get scratches on your models and better protection, Plus I like the netbags for my rulers and templates, etc.

If you start to using foam within your plano it becomes silly time expensive. My time is more worth than the premium for the feldherr bags.

But yeah, the planos are less expensive. Ironically Feldherr is even selling planos, mainly with tokens, dice and cards in mind.

For general storage Feldherr has plain boxes for the foam as well, they are super cheap, but not ideal for transportation.

I have not gotten any scratches on my stuff in my Planos. I've not had any issues with my stuff being in Planos. Do you really have issues with that? Maybe if my stuff was custom painted I could see needing something, but I've not had an issue.

I also got a Plano tray that has an open spot in it. Half of it is open and the rest is divided. I use that for all my extra stuff. It fits my templates, asteroids, etc. I did get a template tray, though, for Xmas. It fits in the top of my Plano rather well.

plano 1374 I have 1 for each faction because I am a nutcase and buy way too many of each ship.

what depth pluck foam are you using and what size bag?
