I'm feeling chatty this morning! So new threads galore!
So I've been GMing this system for about a year now, maybe a bit more, and my 2 players are....less than creative for the most part. They are very analytical, and just simply not that good at improvising and being creative spur of the moment. But they do have their moments! So I thought I'd share a few that they've done that made me smile, and encourage others to do the same!
1. My Jedi Consular Sage character, being sent by his mentor to recover a missing family heirloom, to avoid a diplomatic incident, finds out that it's been stolen by a group of local thugs. He and his companion trace the thugs back to a local body shop, and he simply goes up and approaches the door, and knocks. This is I think, our 2nd session with these characters, so he's still sort of feeling him out, and how he's going to play him. But he decides on a particular tactic, and it was most amusing. He opted to play the Jedi sort of like a Vulcan, or one of the Fey from the Dresden Files. He won't actually "lie", but he will dance around the truth if it suits him. One of the thugs opened the door, and after a few social rolls, assumes the Jedi is the person sent to pick up the stolen artifact. When asked if he's here for the item. My player, with a very straight face, looks at me and says "That's what I was sent here for....yes." It's hard to convey the humor of it, as it's mostly in his delivery, and knowing this guy for being very non-conversational. He takes forever to speak, like asperger syndrome level of "thinking over my words". I'm not exaggerating there, I've actually asked him before why he takes so long to formulate a sentence in response to a discussion, and he's said flat out "he's thinking it over, and over, and reformatting it in his head, until he feels it's perfect". So seeing him actually going with the flow in a social situation was surprising, and really fun!
2. The same player, in a later scene. So I put their 2 PC's into a crashing ship in orbit over a planet. No way to save the ship, it's ripped in half, and falling into the atmosphere. The only question is how long before it crashes, and will they get off in time? Of course, them being heroes, they don't go right for the escape pods, and instead, go to respond to a distress call from some people trapped in a lower deck. I proceed to set up several skill challenges for them as they traverse the ship. It's all zero g at this point, with the power out, and tumbling out of control. They get to a corridor that has a ton of loose debris, bouncing around, like clothing in a dryer....only it's big crates and furniture instead of clothing, and it's a giant corridor in a crashing ship instead of a dryer!
I was going to have it be an athletics check, to try and navigate the obstacles without injury, but he said "How about I fling myself down the corridor, saber out, and chop up the debris?" ...
"Hell yeah! that's way cooler than what I had in mind! Rock that **** man! Here, have a boost die for the attempt, just for sheer awesomeness!" So I flipped it into an attack action instead, coupled with an attack back at him, that he could try and parry (and thus chop up another object), and basically just let the scene happen, because in my head the image was so cool, I couldn't refuse him. ![]()
So what things have your players done that surprised you, or just were sheer awesomely cool ideas that you hadn't anticipated at all?
