How Championships work question

By biohunter21, in Imperial Assault Organized Play

I have a question. Do you have to win a regional championship to be able to go to a national championship? The only reason i ask this is because it says that if you win a regional championship then you get a first round bye at any national championship. Not everyone can have first round byes, so again, back to my question.

No regionals, nationals, worlds are all open to anyone who wants to take part. Although some events have limited seats so you may have to pre-register.

Thanks for clarifying! That is kind of funny. Someone could be the worst player and go to the world championships! I am excited for the regionals; I have never played competitively before.

They could, but they don't stand much chance of winning. :)

If this is your first big tournament, I'd offer some advice.

Bring a bottle of water and some snack food, like trail mix or something like that. Avoid too much caffeine. Also let people know this is your first time, they may not go easier on you, but they're more likely to be forgiving of procedural mistakes.

Lastly... Be prepared to be beat. You may do well, but don't count on it. I'm not commenting on how good you are, but Regionals tend to bring out the better players.

No offense taken. Thanks for the tips!

agreed, I have never been to any competitive (much less a casual) IA tournament, but I have done a decent bit of playing MTG in larger tournament settings, and a few basics I would imagine that can carry between them quite easily:
1: as has been stated, make sure you have a water bottle and some snacking items (pack some extra than what you expect you may need) you never know if there will be a long enough break for you in between games in order to make for a proper food run.

2: If you have a chance, use the washroom at every opportunity. even if you literally drizzle out a tiny stream. same reasoning as the above. The last thing you want is to be stuck making gamebreaking decisions with a full bladder pressuring you :P

3: Scope out the venue, figure out where things are, what you need to know for tournament play, where commonly referenced areas are. All of those will help to ensure you don't end up lost on your way to your table for your match.

4: have a very easy, and minimally taxing way to carry all materials you will need. With IA, as I've stated, I have not done any sort of tournament, but if you can, keep everything you have to one comfortable backpack or duffle, whatever is best for you. something you can easily track and have stashed under a table/ chair.

5: Things get stolen. this is a fact of any sort of tournament I have ever been to. The more people are around, the easier things can go missing. this is why keeping everything in an easily carried bag is crucial for you. I don't mean to try to scare you or anything, but it is a fact. if you plan on trying to trade figs/cards or anything like that after play, maybe see about leaving some at your hotel/wherever you are staying, and going back and switching out loads when you have finished in the tournament. It just makes for a simpler time for yourself that way.

hope some of this helps! I wish you luck!
