Wave 8 Awards

By Firespray-32, in X-Wing

  • Best Ship: Inquisitor's TIE, just so beautiful and has a pair of really interesting named pilots. Generics will make for solid blockers and/or tough Crack Shot carriers.

fugly

Dengar"Gonk" droid?!

  • Or, better yet, send them to me and I'll burn them for you.

I see what you're up to here. :P

Scum has become my primary faction. I don't even know how it happened, they just kind of insinuated their way into that position.

And all these new tricks and toys are going to make them even more fun.

  • Worst Pilot: Lothal Rebel. No ability, needs Phantom to double tap/shoot out the rear...

False, you only need a torpedo loaded to be able to shoot out the rear. A shuttle is at least 18 pts. A plasma torp is only 3. Couldn't hurt to come prepared.

I see alot of fellow X-Wingers are picking the Misthunter has the worst expansion.... Zuckuss and 4-LOM crew on my YV-666 beg to differ.

yeah I dont get it

it offers scum far more than the TAPs offers the empire

Just a guess, but I think Scum is probably the least played faction . Hopefully with the awesome upgrades wave 8 Scum ships offers the faction, more people will see just how great S & V is. I would even say wave 8 puts them on par with both Rebels and Imperials.

Ya know, I wasn't really sold on either Scum ship in 8 at first. Mist Hunter slowly started to worm its way into my heart, and when they revealed the pilots and crew abilities, I was officially won over. If nothing else, flying Bossk with 4-L0M riding shotgun is going to be brilliant. Bossk getting shots on ships unable to use Focus or Evade tokens is going to be killer. Only issue will be jerks like Fel and Moldy Crows rockin' multiple tokens.

I do think Zuckuss crew is slightly overrated (very few ships that can take him can really handle constant stress), but he looks to be fantastic with 4-L0M, or maybe as the new member of a trio with Gunner+Bossk riding with a Trandoshan Slaver.

All sarcasm from my previous post aside, the Jumpmaster, other than having some truly AMAZING toys with it, just doesn't excite me in the slightest. Flying big turrets can sometimes be fun, but it's not usually my "go to", and I already have an Outrider, Falcon, and Decimator if the urge arises. And if I'm flying a big scum ship? It's me: YV-666. I'm going to plop Bossk or one of his lesser lizards on the table and be incredibly happy.

I'll still pick one up eventually (might try to win some store credit, which is how I managed to get a healthy dose of Wave 8 on the cheap), maybe wait for a good sale if I can't find the time/can't resist flying the silliest lists I can and fail. And when I do, I'll probably give it a whirl here and there... especially when I realize the lists I can make with Manaroo and COBRAAA when I actually bother to sit down and try to design a list. But until then? Bossk got his new friend ridin' shotgun. And a second Mist Hunter for my collection would allow me to use a pair of them for escorts, which I think opens up some interesting possibilities.

You forget about the amazing torpedoe boat configurations the Jumpmaster has, very very different from the fat turet style of ship. 3 Contracted Scouts with torpedoes might be the first high tier competetive ordnance based list we see. I think thats exciting.

Just to throw the TAPs a bone, though, it is very pretty :)

Ffg doesn't dissapoint with model quality

Aye, that it is. I'm also determined to prove you naysayers wrong and accomplish things with more than The Inquisitor himself (though he is rightly amazing).

And I'll always stand by that Valen Rudor is a solid deal for his points. Solid enough Juke carrier to help make up for his two dice, and between the title and autothrusters he's (almost) guaranteed at least a couple evades at R3 or against turrets. Throw in his own ability, and he'll be able to try and withstand one volley and then arc dodge away from anyone else with a shot.

His biggest competition for table time will be "Omega Leader" who costs similar and does amazing things. I think El Presidente is the superior against "ace" or two ship lists, but Rudor will shine(ish) against the swarms and TLTs that give OL the fits. And hey, Boost: never downplay the value of positioning. Course, Omega also gets to hang on to his Evade token all day long... but he's also usually public enemy number one, while a lot of players will result in a "reverse Biggs" effect as they likely ignore Rudor to prevent him from using his ability, allowing him to plink away with his Juke shots at his leisure. And if they do shoot at him? Spend your Evade, accept he'll do crap for damage that turn, and your more valuable ships are still free to focus on killing.

But there's also nothing stopping me from running both of them. Still have nearly half your points still available to play with! Just gotta make sure to bring in at least one "heavy hitter" to compliment em'.

  • Best Ship: Ghost or JM5k. Both offer a lot to their respective factions. Both are very cool looking too imo.
  • Worst Ship: TAP - It's fitting into a very crowded spot already with the pilots other than the inquisitor offering very little. It looks great though.
  • Best Pilot: I like Sabine, Ezra, Dengar, Contracted Scout, Zuckuss in no particular order.
  • Worst Pilot: The Baron
  • Best Upgrade Card (has to be a new one): Tough call, Boba? Guidance Chips? Hera Crew? Kanan Crew? All very good.
  • Worst Upgrade Card (has to be a new one): Electric Baffle or Reinforced Deflectors
  • Best Overall Expansion: Ghost/Jump/Mist
  • Worst Overall Expansion: TAP

The G1-A is much better than a B-Wing imo. I think its a mistake to compare it to the bwing and it's spot in the meta currently. It's got a better dial (more green, white 4 forward instead of red, and 3/4 kturn); the kturns alone make this thing much more mobile than a B. It trades broll for an evade (which is fantasic imo) which pairs very nicely with FCS. The PS5 version becomes a decent boba, juke carrier. If you really want B-Roll its available on one ship for 1 point which also includes a tractor beam.

Advanced sensors 4 LOM becomes a very mobile ship with the ability to stress opponents when knife fighting (which it can do with that dial opened up). Zuckuss, juke splits out a tonne of red dice, making it very useful in the HP spam I'm seeing these days. I'm a fan.

TAP is probably the worst expansion from this release, but only because its rather heavily slanted towards upgrades only it cares about and while its an absolutely viable and powerful ship, its place in the game is mostly an alternative to other similar, powerful and absolutely viable ships.

That said, there's no real dud this release at all. The TAP is nothing like the HWK or Scyk or other duds from previous waves. It's just not as packed to the gills with exciting stuff like the Ghost, Jumpmaster, and Mist Hunter.

Am I the only one that is excited about Dengar as a crew?

Why all the hate on the Misthunter? Granted i wouldn't say it is the best ship in wave 8 but every time i have used it on vassal it has more than covered it's cost. Both its unique pilots are good (zuckuss with VI, Title, and adv sen is unexpectedly manuveralble). Overall i think it is very solid. Haven't run the generics but they seem like a good crew platform.

I don't get why people don't like deflectors. After my first game it would have given me like 3 extra hp for 3 points on the ghost

He's solid, but not super sexy. Basically a reverse Predator, which isn't half bad. But he does compete with the equally priced K4 security droid, who allows you to potentially re-roll ALL of your dice. And of all Scum crew carriers, I tend to use a YV-666 or even Dace Bonearm, who are all either frequently using greens or have to in order to shed their stress.

With that said, Dengar on a Firespray (poor greens) or a TLT HWK (cause re-rolls all day!) will be a good buy over the K4. Probably shake out well on the Mist Hunter, too, given their B-Wing 2.0 dial, though there he could be competing with the cheaper FCS. Jumpmaster, ironically, is kind of an odd case for the Dengar crew. He could be a solid addition... or you could possibly go with Unhinged Astromech+K4, which is a solid combo. But if you have reasons to take a different astromech, then Dengar re-enters the equation. Heck, part of me wants to take Tel and slap a Salvaged Astromech on him, making Dengar a good way to get dice mods on offensive while he turtles. And-

Crap, no, I just thought up a build for a Jumpaster.... NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Respectfully disagree. Dengar is about a ba-jillion times better than K4.

I'd run every Slaver with Dengar over K4, were he not unique. Not limiting yourself to green maneuvers is pro. Gotta have full control of your dial in order to make the sweetest moves.

Also not limiting yourself on target choice (or advertising it ahead of time when it might not be obvious)

I became a believer in Dengar crew when i playee the following build.

Zuckuss

VI

Adv Sensors

Dengar

Title / Tractor Beam

With the ps 9 and the ability to barrel roll before you move he becomes a very competent ace hunter (granted he is at 36pt but i have yet to have a battle where he has not pulled more than his weight). Pkus the possible 5 dice r1 attack is just......sweet.

You people who are posting that the best upgrade card might be something other than Guidance Chimps are nuts.

Boba Crew. All about the Boba crew. Your guidance chips are nothing when I jetpack off into the sunset with them :P

If you do that it will be really funny and I can tell everyone you spent 1 point to remove a 0 point upgrade.

not a ba-jillion times better

because you can't Dengar on Dengar

(dengar crew is sexy though)
