False advertising : Mist Hunter pack

By Rogue 4, in X-Wing

This thread is dumb.

Reminds me of college when I was working at a Game Stop. We had signs in the window advertising we sold the new Nintendo Wii but had been regularly sold out immediately after each new shipment. At least once a day some self righteous whack job would stomp in and start complaining that it was false advertising or bait and switch for us to have those posters in the windows.

It is not "false advertisting" and I would certainly have named the thread something else. It is annoying and it is also a bit surprising as well.

I just wanted to express my disappointment that the Mist Hunter expansion only contains a single copy of the Tractor Beam upgrade card. I understand previews are just that and the final product can change. However, the previews do have real-world consequences regarding purchasing decisions.

I am a big fan of X-wing and have been consistently impressed with the designers and FFG as a company. This is not a "deal-breaker" for me but I did want to mention that these sorts of changes are frustrating for your customers.

Here's my email to FFG customer service:

You can pick that apart and call me whiny or anything else but I am (mildly) disappointed by this change and I would like FFG to know about it so they hopefully do this less in the future.

Let's be honest, how hard can it be to add a "accepting reservation" to your window advertising? Especially if this happens all the time ;-)

If this would happen all the time with FFGs there would be a point to it, because it would establish a pattern.

Because when you start accepting reservations people who are too lazy to make them complain. Oh and people make multiple reservations and then don't cancel when they buy something somewhere else which causes you to sit on inventory.

First come first serve is the fairest way but that has nothing to do with this conversation. The issue is that things change between the time a product is announced and when it is released.

We don't hold me video games to look and play at release like they did at E3. We don't expect cars to look like what they did at an auto show three years before they make it to showrooms.

If you don't like what they choose to sell you don't have to buy it. Take your "outrage" and "disappointment" and vote with your wallet. Moaning about things won't change anything.

Previews change. Check actual product before purchasing. If the vendor you used provided incorrect information complain to them.

Things changed in development. Not the first time a preview image has been wrong about card contents. The decision to include a second copy of Baffle over tractor beam makes sense since Imperial Veterans is hitting stores in a couple months. It'd be nice if FFG had a way to warn us about this, but how would they do that?

And imagine the self-righteous outrage when they did this. There'd be a whole thread about how FFG has falsely advertised the product just to generate pre-orders to online retailers, and that it's obvious they have no idea what they're doing.

Either way, they were not going to end it without an angry thread full of nerdrage.

That example has nothing to do with this case.

This case would be more like advertising that the Nintendo Wii that you are selling comes with Wii Sports and Mario Galaxy included. Then you buy it, go home, open the package and find only Wii Sports and Wii Play inside.

Anyone who thought that game was going to be good deserved what they got. I can't help it that they read Game Informer (is that still even in print?).

I suspect it's because Imperial Aces will come with at least one Tractor Beam, so they've got another way of getting them out there, while they've got no plans to release another ship with Electronic Baffles in the near future.

We are sorry, but your post has exceeded the rationality limit of this thread. These nice men will take you to the Fortress of Rage until you can return to the discussion with a more appropriate attitude. Good day citizen.

Situation is different, persons are the same.

Fortress is far too stable a structure for the mood described

you're thinking of the House of Cards of Rage, which is annoying to say and far more rage inducing when it comes tumbling down to negate all the effort you put into setting it up

All I'm gonna say is I hope the Punishing One has two Chimps, and that for a wave with 3 price point increases FFG should do a better job of cleaning up any errors like this just before release. Even just a little blurb like "Mist Hunter update! We will be trading one of the TB cards in there for a Baffle! Enjoy" would have nipped this in the bud.

I myself am a little unimpressed by the price hike. The Ghost is reasonable to increase the cost, it's massive, but did it really need to be that big? Christ, the Falcon looks like a gnat beside it! And why is the AP two bucks more now? The same with the MH. The PO stayed the same and that's fine, but why the price jump?

Why the price jump and then the confusion about package contents?

This is great news. I was debating buying a second G-1A for Electronic Baffle, now I don't have to. I'm not using more than one Tractor Beam anyway until Veterans come out.

The TAP? Looks like the MSRP is still $14.95 same as always. Any price hike is not on FFG's end.

I expected something like this.

Does FFG ever fix the contents pic? That would have been a good idea- just change the preview article photo when they decide to change the number of cards/tokens.

No biggie to me, overall. It just makes me think that someone gets paid a decent salary to make sure this doesn't happen... Hell, I can do it for half the price and I won't screw it up. ;)

Huh, must be a distributor thing then. Okay well good, as long as it ain't FFG being greebos!

Though I am saddened by the loss of the T-Beam, I do like the idea of having two Baffles. I have two B-Wings, and soon I'll have two Attani Mind Links though I think those are scum only right?

Anything in the preview pictures were subject to change. No point in getting upset over a couple cards; sun is still shining and I am looking forward to messing around with the new stuff.

First world problem strikes again.

Tractor Beams will also be in Imperial Veterans and most likely in other expansions as well.

I'm angry that people aren't more excited for electronic baffle!

It is baffling isn't it? ^_^

Before any of you who were confused look up the actual contents of the package or just look at a 6 month old picture?

I don't get electronic baffle. Unless you have a regen, which is mostly rebellion ships, unless circumstances are such dire why would I want a damage for a white or green maneuver? I know I'd loose my action on a white maneuver but still.

How is this useful on a ship that doesn't regen, i.e. rebel.

Having options is always powerful.

It was clearly designed as a response to the stress heavy metagame.

Is it an ideal piece of tech? No.

For myself, I am not too bothered. Both tractor beam and e baffle are far too complex for my "point and click" play-style; if they produced an upgrade that stopped you flying into rocks or off the damned board, then yep I'd be really fussy about getting all the cards I could lay my hands on!

But that is just me...

However...people are entitled to rely on promotional materials in making their decisions on what to purchase. Equally, everyone can understand that the earlier in a product's production cycle information is released, the more likely it is that changes will occur.

FFG should be careful as I suspect they are in a bit of a grey area with this kind of stuff. They really ought to publish disclaimers on the articles, and update photos before they get re-used - if for no better reason than to avoid this kind of discussion!

Clearly this man does not know the magnificent glory of the Space Cow.

Taking one damage to prevent a stress is a bargain for pilots who are already used to ferrying the Dark Lord of the Sith, especially when it enables the sorts of maneuver that Omicron Pilots could only dream of before: back-to-back hard turns.
