GR75s and ACKBAR - can they attack

Ackbar states that

"Before a friendly ship’s Attack Step, it may choose to attack from only its left and right hull zones this round. If it does, it may add 2 red dice to its attack pool while attacking a ship."

Attack sequence is

Roll Attack Dice: Gather attack dice to form the attack
pool and roll those dice. Gather only the dice that are
appropriate for the range of the attack as indicated by
the icons on the range ruler.
◊◊ If the defender is a ship, gather the attack dice
indicated in the attacking hull zone’s or squadron’s
battery armament.
◊◊ If the defender is a squadron, gather the attack dice
indicated in the attacker’s anti-squadron armament.
◊◊ If the attacker cannot gather any dice appropriate for
the range of the attack, the attack is canceled.

and the FAQ states

Q: If a ship’s attack would not include any dice, but the ship
can add dice through a card effect, can it perform the
attack?
A: No. If a ship does not gather any dice during the “Roll Attack
Dice” step of an attack, the attack is canceled.

Now my confusion is the application of Before in Ackbars ability. Does it let you add the dice and perform an attack or not? This also would apply to CR90bs and MC30 Torpedoes aswell at long range.

It would seem odd that the Rebels most expensive Commander cannot be used on 3 of its ships

No, you cannot add dice to the GR75.

For Ackbar to activate you have to choose BEFORE attacking to only attack from the Left and Right hull zones. Then you gather the dice from the battery, which is where the GR75 fails. It has no battery to gather dice to form the Attack Pool and therefore cannot add any dice said (non-existant) Attack Pool from the remainder of Ackbar's ability

What Belegon has stated has been the Forums "Concensus" for lack of a better word.

It is applicable mostly due to CR90As trying to shoot at from a Side Arc Long Range through an Obstruction at a Target, and being Denied their chance to Ackbar...

At that point, you even gather the one die, but discard it before rolling.

There's 0 dice in your pool.

The attack is cancelled.

With the addition of Enhanced Armament, you can ackbar on a CR90B if you want, since it increases your battery armament. You are still caught in the obstruction issue if you are only at long range though, since you would lose the lone red die.

Plus, lets be honest. Enhanced armaments is kinda silly on a CR90B when that 10 pts could get you dodonna's pride plus SW7's, but to each his/her own.....

CR90Bs don't have the Turbolaser Slot to do the Enhanced Armaments.

They have the Ion to do the SW7s.

The CR90A can, and that lets it get around the obstruction... But that's it.

Or for 2 points a cr90 a could just take Jainas light and be like "what now, sucka? Get red-y cause here I come!"

Thats what they're like.

Glad those things don't have a side die. Can you imagine how bad that would get? 20 points for 3 dice at full range on a small ship? Ackbar would basically just load up 20 of the buggers and go to town.

The before is not the issue. The ability is an Add. Thus it follows the rules established with that of an Add.

Ackbar's before is to make you choose to use the ability or not.

I stand corrected. I had not slept prior to that post....or I was drinking...or both....can't remember....

If the GR75 can take enhanced armanents then it would be able to ackbar. I doubt it can take it though.

the way I understand it on the m30 torpedo and C90B Ackbar still kicks in once you get to blue range. As long as you have dice in the pool you can add whatever color dice is specified to it. The dice still needs to be in range, or if the upgrade says add a dice of any color. I thought about using this to put TRC to give a shrimp the extra kick in knife fight range

you are correct. I think the OP meant because the GR75 has no dice to begin with on its side arcs
