WAVE III ANNOUNCEMENT

By WWPDSteven, in Star Wars: Armada

If this is just part of the wave I think it would have been better to not make this the first preview. If this is the entire wave I have serious worries about the game's future.

Why?

Game is fantastic now.

Game is getting an interesting addition that will add depth to choices.

What am I missing?

the problem has nothing to do with the GAME persay more those that PLAY THE GAME or rather the lack thereof. if the new waves dont keep up intreast the community will crumble and many of us will lose our chance to play.

There are plenty of games that have been out of production for longer than Armada has been in production, that still have thriving player bases. A good game with good IP will always have a player base.

Really? name one, i have never once seen a community for a game that is out of production...

keyword COMMUNITY, active growing group

Blood Bowl. Until about two months ago GW hadn't touched that game in an age. Around here there are at least three leagues that I know of that regularly have at least a dozen players as well as tournaments. There is even an official organisation running the game, the NAF. There is a 'world championship' every four years as well.

Though essentially I agree with you clon, I still think it's a shame that it's still perceived that miniature games have to adopt a kind of LCG model in order to survive due to peoples constant desire for new shiny toys. Personally I'd be happy with a new wave every year as it gives everyone a chance to actually play with their toys and really get to know them and develop tactics and strategies through repeated play rather than relying on the internet to spoon feed us everything. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with sharing experience. There's nothing wrong either with 'net-listing' but I like Armada because it's not X-Wing. X-Wing where the 'meta' changes before a wave is even released as people are obsessively building lists with upgrades and ships that aren't even released.

good thoughts!

now I'm not saying they should do an LCG pace of every 3 months or so but they need something to keep interest up. Personally the only reason I'm playing this game is for ISD's so i could care less if they say poo poo on you and leave because i already got my Star destroyers, BUT, others lose interest in this game rather quickly or they feel they are at a disadvantage when they get into a game that others have been playing for years. what new release do is give new interest to maintain it as an active hobby and not a shelf game that you play once in a while, and has the benefit of somewhat leveling the playing for new players because the new stuff id new to veterans as well. basically i already see a drastic drop off in interest in my area and haven't had a torunement in 3 months, and that one didn't actually happen because only 3 players showed up. I want to play this game, I currently can ONLY play on vassal due to a lack of community caused by a lose of interest during the news gap and long waiting period. I haven't used my models in over a month now and I really REALLY was hoping that wave 3 news would re-vitilise my community but Im not sure it will. You know the worst part! nearly all of the players that left Armada (some started selling their stuff even) went to OTHER FFG games which means the company wont care much about it (has the shouldn't, they have a good business right now)

sorry i got a little ranty... lol anyway thats all i have to say

TL:DR /the lack of news has caused a severe decrease in my local community that killed my local armada group, it is in fact a problem.

Just remember clon I'm on your side here! ;)

I understand that lack of news/updates/releases can cause interest to drop off... But that's a symptom rather than the problem itself. The problem is that gamers these days will only invest in a game that has a constant stream of 'new shiny' even at the expense of the game itself. Just take a look at the mess that is Star Trek Attack Wing. They're up to wave what? Twenty-three? Something like like. And the game is a complete, unbalanced mess.

I think the way forward in many Armada communities is to look at games like Blood Bowl and push the game in the local community on it's strength... In Armada's case it's elegant game mechanic and deep strategic element. It's difficult to do granted, but people do still play games purely because of their play experience (Blood Bowl, Rogue Trader, 'Oldhammer', Epic) rather than because in two months time they'll have a whole new load of stuff to throw on the table. They're a different type of gamer but they are out there!

Starcraft I, street fighter II, chess, ticket to ride, bang!, mafia, even friggin' UNO. There are things that get dollars because new + shiny and there are things that get dollars and longevity from being good.

I'm really hoping Armada ends up in the good category, shiny things/ragequit be damned.

Regarding the tl/dr.... that's why YOU need to make sure people keep playing. Don't rely on the game company to keep people interested.

Otherwise, I agree with your earlier point that people do lose interest if there isn't somewhat regular releases. I don't like it, but I know how fickle people are.

well you see I went to every event I could find in town for several months and I brought extra stuff to Demo with and I Play with as many as i could and then we reached a point where I was the only one at the event.... so 3 times a week i would devote an hour of my day to waiting for someone to show up they did about 1/3 of the time so why should i bother to waste my time? clearly my efforts were in vane, I needed something else to help me and thats what Im saying

Your community is clearly hopeless. It's time for you to relocate.

I'd invite you here, but I'm already having trouble beating my locals.

They also note that that Wave III is slated for a 3rd Quarter release, there's plenty of time for other announcements.

BFG, NetEA, Bloodbowl. There's probably more, but these are the ones I'm involved in.

Tell me about the people you game with.

Are they a group of friends who meet repeatedly on a regular basis? Are they random people who only play at organised events? Is there a mixture of the two?

Do you have a proper gaming group? There's one in almost every town. I think if you want to grow the game, you can't just go to events or arrange events. You need to set up a proper gaming group, that meets on a regular basis, so everyone can get to know everyone else. In this sort of environment, the game can grow. You can share venue hire costs, or even operate out of a games store if there's a suitable one nearby.

You could start by just making a "TOWN Wargamers" facebook page and inviting everyone in your local area that you know to be a gamer.

I mean, we're a town of ~15,000 people and we have 98 members on our facebook page. Sure, most of them are silent members, but it's always possible to arrange a game of whatever you want because everyone knows everyone else. If we were just waiting for people to turn up to pre-arranged events, the place would seem like a ghost town but with a bit of liaising between gamers, we can work out times that suit everyone and suddenly the place is full to the rafters.

where did you advertise these "demo" games three times a week? There are actually quite a few active players.

There was a store champ in the valley last week. This issue with the local scene here is no one has attempted to organize it.
