Store in Southeast Michigan refuses to hold its Store Championship

By droz69, in Star Wars: Armada

This is kind of crummy. The store received an Armada Store Championship kit, but is refusing to hold it. They got the Armada Regional as well. They said they are only going to do the regional. Bit upsetting for a lot of the locals here. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Sucks, but ultimately it's their call. No one can force them to run events.

Out of curiosity, did they give a reason? Usually it's higher selling games taking up the gaming space / lack of available dates / no one willing to run it that causes a store to do something like this.

Nope. Not a one. Just that they are only doing the regional.

Wait. . . What?!

wow, that sucks bantha balls.

What do they plan to do with the kit, otherwise?

FFG was pretty clear that stores which try to sell the kits online get insta-banned form any future event, so...doesn't make any sense to not run it. They can't very well do anything else with the kit.

I'd shoot an email over to FFG'S OP and attach any communication you have had with the store on the subject.

A store not willing to run an SC is very fishy, as without doing so they just wasted money on the kit. This would lead one to ask why would a store buy a kit and do nothing with it? There are of course valid reasons, but there are also a number of reasons that aren't valid. Such as selling the kit or just giving the contents to employees/locals. Neither of which is something FFG allows.

Secondly, store not willing to run an SC should not be in the consideration for running a Regional. It is as simple as that. It may not impact this year, but moving forward FFG will hopefully not consider a store that doesn't run an SC for being selected to host a Regional.

At the least FFG can contact the store to see what is what. I'm not privy to the exact agreement associated with being allocated an SC kit, but not running one very well may not be an option in FFG's view.

Maybe they already worked it out with FGG.

Is there any notion of what their reasoning is?

Were there not enough players?

Not enough players means you possibly are charged more for attending the event to win something, and costing more money means less likely people will attend, and eventually you get someone paying 50 bucks to play a game and receive 8 alternate art cards that they can use...

Well, they've already purchased the kit, so even if they have to reduce the entry fee and take a loss that's still better than a total loss by not hosting at all.

Plus they're hosting a Regional, so I doubt it's lack of interest.

Do you speak of RIW? It's really not a suprise...

Yea, it's RIW

Man that website is confusing.

I guess sometimes some shops just don't want to invest the time to make money....

Couldn't a local gaming club offer to run the Store Championship for them at either the store or the club's own venue using the kit?

I was never impressed with RIW when I drove up there for Warmachine events. I guess I'm not really surprised.

Do you live further north or south? I drive into Toledo to play and there's 4 stores that try to hostStore Championships.

There have been a few store championships in the area, Warriors 3 in Wayne, has done a good job with their tournaments. I was a regular at RIW back in the SWCCG days, but have only stopped by for an item or two over the last 15 years, and have never done miniatures there.

Why?

They host a large spread of different games/events. As per my experience, in this neck of the woods, most stores don't have staff that can judge events for Armada. So, if the person who originally was the TO backs out, they are bit stuck.

Also, if they called around to the other stores, and learned some of the participation numbers...well, that could be a little off-putting.

Sounds like they expect the TO's to do the complete job for them. They should be advertising along side the TO. It helps a lot.

My local enlisted me for their XWing/Armada TCs, and are very supportive. I am not aware of other businesses' relationships with their TOs, and refrain from assumptions. Sometimes, things happen, and events that aren't even on the calendar yet...get cut. I'm just looking forward to the regional, they are hosting, and hope this sort of news isn't a harbinger.

I doubt calling around to find out attendance numbers scared RIW off the Store Championship. There's only been 4 for the entire state. The Lansing and Grand Rapids ones were kinda duds, but the other two in metro Detroit had 8 and 10. That seems like pretty good numbers to me.

I will admit, I don't understand this.

There Has to be a reason, and its a shame there is no statement on that matter that I could see as an Impartial viewer...

But even then, the Kit was paid for and is sitting there - what further is there to lose?

I am going to give these ........a call and we'll see what is going on. They won't want me calling again that is for sure.

Can you imagine the look of terror on the storemanager's face once AdmiralNelson is finished with him.
