How to use an Imp-1

By Gottmituns205, in Star Wars: Armada

So as you all know I have a Venator...and I'll be using it saturday as an Imperial 1.

Yet I'm VERY confused on how to actually make the Imperial 1 work in any list. Frankly it kinda has me a bit worried. I've gone carrier build with no luck, shooting build...I'm just confused where to go and how to make it work.

Coming off the strong wins with my Victory fleet, I'm wondering if I should just sub a Victory for the Venator.

I mean I see people using the Imp 1 as a carrier.

Right now I'm trying to build a list with Vader(squadron), Fel, Dengar and an Imp 1...and seeing how I can put a Victory or something else in there for the lols.

I have had great success with this list. Just something to consider

Motti's Marauders
Author: Englishpete

Faction: Galactic Empire
Points: 398/400

Commander: Admiral Motti

Assault Objective: Advanced Gunnery
Defense Objective: Contested Outpost
Navigation Objective: Minefields

Victory I-Class Star Destroyer (73 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)
- XI7 Turbolasers ( 6 points)
- Expanded Launchers ( 13 points)

Raider-I Class Corvette (44 points)
- Impetuous ( 4 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)

[ flagship ] Imperial I-Class Star Destroyer (110 points)
- Admiral Motti ( 24 points)
- Relentless ( 3 points)
- Wulff Yularen ( 7 points)
- XI7 Turbolasers ( 6 points)
- Leading Shots ( 4 points)

6 Aggressor Assault Fighters ( 96 points)

Think of it this way:

An IMP 1 is:

A Victory SD that has Rapid Reload, Dominator Title without losing Shields (Out the Front), Expanded Hangers, and Engine Techs.

It doesn't NEED anything else...

ooooooooooh kinky!

Why can't it be an ISD 2? You still have the choice of boosted comms or expanded hangers. You don't need both.

Unless you are super heavy squadron you don't need expanded hangers. Boosted comms aren't as essential as on the VSD due to the fact you are much better at turning st high speed.

In terms of using the ISD, I see it as an all in ship. If you are versus Nebs or VSDs go hard and fast and plough right through them. Close the distance super quickly.

Motti can help with the increased damage you take, or Ozzel helps get close then slam on the brakes.

No expanded launchers, both the vic one and the isd one have three blacks out the front.

Should I change that to Rapid Reload then?

Its Rapid Reload Then.

Happier, Mad? You got me :)

Got to suggest lumping a Gunnery Team on there, maybe Leading Shots if you've got the card (unless you're commanding with Darth Vader) and Heavy Turbolaser Turrets.

You could go for a Tractor Beam if you were feeling flashy, as it would go some way to keeping enemy ships in your Black range.

Other than that, just try keeping it as a heavy gunboat? Get some cheap fighters (probably TIE Bombers) to fly with it, which it can activate with its generous Squadron allowance to throw some damage down early. Back it up with some cheap Gladiators, or some Raiders.

Best commander would probably be Admiral Motti, since it won't have any Electronic Countermeasures it's going to take a whollop or two. That being said, Admiral Screed is always great, especially if you've got some snazzy critical effects in the fleet.

Then just be aggressive. Really aggressive.

Like, really rather aggressive indeed.

The ISD-I can't take ECM but therefore it is 17 points cheaper than the ISD-II.

I like to keep them cheap and rush at opponents. Something like:

Motti, 2 ISD-I with gunnery teams, a tooled up Demolisher and 6 Tie-Ftr.

The other build is the mega carrier to control 6 fighters a turn at up to long range each with +1 blue dice from the flight controllers.

ISD-I, Flight controllers, Expanded Hangar, Boosted Comms, Wulff (optional)

No expanded launchers, both the vic one and the isd one have three blacks out the front.

I am!

Am I the only one who prefers ord exp on ISD-I's?

It's hard enough getting one thing at a time in the front arc.

I think GT are one of the most overrated upgrade cards going for Imperials, unless everyone loves being able to shoot a ship, then squadrons from the same arc.

So no Dur you aren't the only one, or maybe we just play against rebels who know how to use speed, and maneuverability to get out of that front arc. (And I mean all dice range, not just pot shotting with 3/4 red ISD/VSD)

shooting at ships AND squads makes my sack tingle.

I totally agree with Drasnighta. The ISD1 is an amazing value "as is".

Just play it bare and it will not disappoint. I love that it can be a carrier as well as a "kill it kill it kill it!" machine.

Hastatior, you should try toothpaste.

Just use leading shots, same thing sorta, and keep the teams for squads at least and as a deterrent against two ships getting in your face

fling squadrons with it!

Difference is Leading Shots lets you reroll Reds and Blacks, but only out of the Front Arc on the ISD-I.

Ordnance Experts has the Black Die Rerolls without cost in every arc, but of course its only Blacks...

We had a thread about this earlier (search might find it?) and I'll repeat what I said here: ISD-Is are good at basically two things:

  1. Being outfitted as a super-carrier with Boosted Comms + Expanded Hangar Bays (+possibly Flight Controllers and other pro-squadron upgrades).
  2. Being run as close to naked as possible. I've had success with only Tractor Beams on mine (running 2 + a VSD-I, also with only a Tractor Beam)

An ISD-II is a much better platform for loading lots of upgrades onto the ship to make it into a serious gunship (ECM, Gunnery Team, XI7s/Heavy Turbolaser Turrets, etc.) and the ISD-I can't really compete with that. It can, however, be run with few to no upgrades far better than an ISD-II and those points add up. I'll also add that it's GREAT for getting opponent's ships stuck in a ram-each-other-until-death trap where the ISD-I's front arc and fat hull points really shine.

Combined with Ozzell, it is a very large an beefy Gladiator equivalent, outputting massive hurt by doing a last-first maneuver.

Leading Shots + Xi7 + Wulf

My Imp-1 tends to go at a high rate of speed towards the front of an enemy formation. This generally sees it flying froma flanking start position. In general I have not had terrible luck with this variant of the ship, but I do find it sees more use as a carrier when I upgrade it.
