Venator Painting Progress

By Gottmituns205, in Star Wars: Armada

Alright so we've had a good first day painting the Venator...black primer coat applied. Now we're onto the serious painting...the base coat was the suggested "Administraum Grey" thinned to be accepted for airbrushing. I think I'll go over the ship again with a dry brush to bring it more in line with the FFG color.

When this coat dries, I'll apply the odd panels and then seal it all with a gloss coat...then a very thinned black wash to get into the details. Finish this all off with the engines being colored and then bam....she's ready for war.

I admit I'm semi worried about the color, I hope the wash will darken it.

So its going to be Imperial grey at the end, or the usual red stripe colour scheme from RotS?

Imperial colors

Wow. Very nice. And you might have it for a while without the masses having it since they just announced Transports for the next Wave...

Here is an update, the dark grey panels have been applied...and a gloss varnish applied.

When it dries, we it it with a wash and do the engines...a matt varnishing and then this baby will be table top ready for saturday.

Looks really good G.

Looks great!

(I'm really hoping that you have the card down for picture purposes and you're not actually painting it with a ship card down haha)

(Also, would a Venator be a large ship? I always imagined it as more Victory in size, but I now realize that I have no real basis for that assumption)

DA used to put it down as a medium ship, now he says it's a large.

Frankly it could go either way...I may run it as a carrier built Victory for simple list making purposes.

It's more VSD, than ISD for me, but regardless, it's looking sweet.

Wowsers, very nice model and paint job there!

Beautiful looking ship there Gottmituns! Almost lost this thread in amongst all the 'rage quit' threads but glad I found it again :D

We need some cheer vs the doom and gloom here.

Brilliant model, well done.

Glad to be of service :D

Here we go guys...I somehow...SOMEHOW saved this ship from a bath of simple green.

I-DID-NOT-LEARN-FROM-THE-SPACEWHALE

Repeat after me....

do not use nuln-oil on capital ships

do not use nuln-oil on capital ships

do not use nuln-oil on capital ships

It was only after I panic'd and hit the food lion (which was out of simple green) did I realize the first rule of "it looks iffy"

DRYBRUSH

So yeah...I drybrushed with the original color...then repainted the off panels in a lighter shade. The 3D print is still...semi fuzzy and it doesn't take washes very well on panels even if it is gloss varnished.

I did however go back to my favorite wash....MIG DARK WASH...

and behold the results:

All she needs is the engines painted...and then I can varnish seal it and she'll be tabletop ready for saturday.

Looks tremendous. Very sexy.

I honestly think it's better when I said "it's not going to match the FFG ships 100%, stop trying so hard."

That's beautiful. Good work, man!

Now you're making me want to buy one! And I'm already stretched between 5 starship miniatures games! Curses! :P

Holy cow.nyou did that a shaeways product. How did you getvhtv grain off.msand?

How did you get the dark saturated card stock.mthe black ship card is very black

Wow! I need to stop following this thread before I seriously start to consider a Mark I Assault Frigate for my Rebels! :P

I'll be getting a Mk1 assault frigate as well.

and I'll be painting my space whale (finally) as I now know how to do it.

I can feel the resolve and determination surging through you - especially after that double post ;).

The Force is strong in this one.

Lovely work Gottmituns! You've got it almost identical to the FFG Imperial paint scheme. You may have just convinced me into buying a Venator!

And I'm already looking forward to seeing the space whale second attempt. I have no doubt that you will succeed this time.

One question, how much was the shipping to you from shapeways? (I assume you live somewhere in Europe, Germany maybe?)
