Build Your Best Non-PTL Interceptor

By Firespray-32, in X-Wing

Is Kir Kanos really bad? I mean, he's not the arc dodging super man that all the others are, but he's a decent sniper. Sit in the rear and take Evade. Use it to add an extra hit. I mean, he can't modify dice, but sometimes you don't need to. He does ADD A HIT AUTOMATICALLY. If you roll 3 hits, you get to add a 4th. Or maybe you only hit twice, but then add up towards the third. Works with Auto Thrusters if he's at R3.

Of course.....I don't mean in the top tables of Worlds that is super competitive and only flies a small % of all the pilots ever made. I mean more for fun games at the local game store. I can see him being good for Epic and helping to take down ships.

His ability is actually solid, but lack of an EPT is what kills him.

Why? Is it a specific EPT that he HAS to have to be worth it?

Pretty sure it's just Push the Limit. This gives him a way to make him hit like a truck (spend focus on attack) OR be defensive (keep focus for defense). I think the concern is that spending his Evade to add a damage clues your opponent into the fact that, "Hey, this pilot is dangerous, and now he has no tokens. Let's destroy him!"

Which defeats the purpose of this thread of non-PTL guys. I still think he's not a bad option if you don't have an EPT.

I like using Kir with Vader and the Emperor

I think the best interceptor without PTL is two academy pilots.

Backstabber with an EU?

No one else said it.

We also weren't supposed to say alpha+ thrusters. Getting pretty thin there without just saying Turr/Jax + vi and thrusters.

So if you're only spending 20-25pts you get 2-6 red dice, 3 green dice with focus, 2 actions and 6hp (about how many HP an interceptor "gets"). If you're spending 30, 2 named ties or crackshots does similar work.

North of 30? Lots of other imperial ships do the same thing, and probably better, for the same cost or cheaper with better tricks.

Do the same building exercise in reverse: build the best single imperial ship with the equivalent of 3 dice red and green and 3-4hp of durability. You get lots of not interceptors: named ties, FOs, now TAPs...

There's a reason why Soontir and Jax have been pretty well the only interceptors in play lately: plenty of better options unless you're spending north of 30.

I've been a die hard interceptor pilot since they were released and they just keep getting taken off the table...literally and in list building.

Killjoy. ;)

But seriously, although your points are valid, I feel much more comfortable and confident throwing 3-4 attack dice than 2-3. It's a bit of a meta call, I think. You may be better with TIE fighters, but I'd rather fly and die in a TIE interceptor anyday.

I always wanted to try:

Soontir Fel

Squad Leader

Royal Guard TIE

Autothrusters

Try flying him with a Squad Leader, Fleet Officer, and/or Colonel Jendon. If you can get Kanos some modifiers, he starts to hit like a truck.

And, sure, it means getting some support on the table... but that's not so bad. He'll be pretty fond of a cheap TIE Shuttle rockin' a Fleet Officer when Veterans hits.

Tetran + SoT + AT + SD

Turr + SL + EI + AT

Soontir + Decoy + AT + SD

--97--

Or Give Tetran Decoy and Soontir Opportunist for 99pts.

With either version as long as anyone is within R2 of another there's a good amount of synergy.

The 99pts version banks more on Tetran staying alive since his Decoy is what allows Turr to SL for Fel.

Or if you drop an SD for a TC or find 1pt elsewhere you can pick up Jax + Opportunist and leave Decoy on Fel.

I just happen to like Tetran's ability more than Jax especially with SoT.

Royal Guard + VI + Auto Thrusters x4

I don't know how if it could win tournaments, but I love the idea of having 4x 8 PS ships.

...okay so flying a non-ptl interceptor with 1 hull left is more like flying half a ship. Pretty fun, though.

Unless you're definitely going to be running Carnox Jax, Opportunist's not a good fit for Soontir really - at PS9, he's likely to be shooting first (or very early), meaning his target will likely still have focus/evade tokens and will block Opportunist as a result.

You ideally want Opportunist ships to be lower down the PS pecking order, so that the target's tokens may already have been spent before you fire.

Carnor Jax makes for a good Opportunist carrier, as do the Sabre Squadrons.

Use Oicunn with Swarm Tactics?

Use Carnor as an action denier?

Use blockers?

Use other PS 9 attackers?

Use Rebel Captive on your support ships?

Point is, best Opportunist carriers in the game are Soontir Fel and Keyan Farlander since they turn the stress cost essentially into a focus. Opportunist has some issues in reliable triggering, but that's what the rest of the squad can help with.

*Cough* *Cough*

Palob Godalhi with Dorsal Turret.

At range 1, 4 dice + target lock and focus.

Dorsal Turret is range 1-2, Palob's ability to steal Focus or Evade tokens is also range 1-2.
