Build Your Best Non-PTL Interceptor

By Firespray-32, in X-Wing

Is Kir Kanos really bad?

Without Fleet Officer, he is.

On the rounds when you roll nothing but eyeballs, yeah, it's worse, but how often does that happen?

I'll put this one under #GreenDiceSuck!

Nah, you just have to get used how to fly him, positioning becomes even more important. But he can usually hang around till the endgame. And then you've got an Interceptor hiding behind 5 dice, an Evade or Focus and Autothrusters. Unstressed from PtL so you can make complete use of the dial while still taking an action, which is different from what people are mostly used to anyway.

OK....I agree that on the defensive, it's bad. At least he should hopefully be at R3 from most, though. That will give him AT's. Also, if the enemy fires first, he can use his Evade on defense. Better to still be alive to fire turns later than to max out one shot.

I'm interested to try Saber Squadron with Rage.

(In this case, they're Raging that they can't PTL) :P

You should also really endeavour to stay out of arc.

The Royal Crack:

4x Royal Guard Pilot, Crackshot, Autothrusters, RG Title.

Buy four Imperial Ace packs or get the paints out for additional cool points.

Turr Phennir with Lonewolf, Royal Guard Title, Autothrusters and Stealth Device.

Came here looking for this. Glad I'm not the only one.

On a more serious note, there is a list that I suggest new Imperial minded players try out:

2x RG+PTL

2x Saber+Opportunist

This list teaches the new player a few things. The importance of action economy and how to win without jousting. Skills a all TIE pilots need to crush those Rebel cowards that hide behind shields.

I find it funny that many alternatives to Push the Limit still hand out stress. And why shouldn't they? TIE interceptors (and their Pilots) are really good at handling small doses of stress. I especially like Sabers with Opportunist, and Royal Guards with Crackshot sound dangerous, too - kill before you get killed. Here's my favorite squad at the moment:

4x Alpha Squadron Pilot

Omicron Group Pilot (Adv. Sensors, Fleet Officer, Intelligence Agent)

Got me 8th place at Store Championship, will try again at the end of the month.

4x Royal Guard Pilot + Predator hits really hard, but you have to rely on green dice.

Lt. Lorrir (Royal Guard TIE, Targeting Computer, Autothrusters). I haven't played him yet, but I really really want to. He's my favorite pilot.

Is Kir Kanos really bad? I mean, he's not the arc dodging super man that all the others are, but he's a decent sniper. Sit in the rear and take Evade. Use it to add an extra hit. I mean, he can't modify dice, but sometimes you don't need to. He does ADD A HIT AUTOMATICALLY. If you roll 3 hits, you get to add a 4th. Or maybe you only hit twice, but then add up towards the third. Works with Auto Thrusters if he's at R3.

Of course.....I don't mean in the top tables of Worlds that is super competitive and only flies a small % of all the pilots ever made. I mean more for fun games at the local game store. I can see him being good for Epic and helping to take down ships.

His ability is actually solid, but lack of an EPT is what kills him.

Took him to the regional last year. He was my MVP.

Experimental Interface and Expert Handling=no ptl loophole

EI/EH may actually be a solid build for Soontir now that ordnance alphas and Omega Leader are rapidly becoming A Thing. Especially OL, OL massively screws with Soontir if he ever gets him in arc.

Heh. Saber Squadron Pilot with Juke and Autothrusters seems good, too. You'd need more than 1 because the ship getting shot would probably be forced to spend the Evade token before it shoots, so a flight group of four of these guys could do nicely. Would they outpace 5 Alphas with Autothrusters? Tough to tell.

Tetran Cowell + VI. PS 9, reasonably priced, good choices for movement on the K Turns, though still dice dependant.

I know the forum hates him but I've always enjoyed throwing him down.

I don't hate him, he just doesn't feel enough better than an RGP to justify the extra cost - and Interceptors love multiple actions, so his ability that makes his red moves cooler is just not that useful.

If only he could take a Targetting Astromech...

Saber Squadron Pilot, Predator, Hull Upgrade = 27 points

or its big brother:

Royal Guard Pilot, Predator, Title, Hull Upgrade, Autothrusters = 30 points

Can't ask for better offense or maneuverability. It's a real joy to fly because you get the whole dial and have great offense for the points.

Alpha + Autothrusters :D

Alternatively, a Rage Saber with Autothrusters is 24 points. Saberage?

Why? Is it a specific EPT that he HAS to have to be worth it?

Carnor Jax + EH + AT + EI

Cant use Focus or evade tokens, and he magicians the TL away. No modification for you!

Pretty sure it's just Push the Limit. This gives him a way to make him hit like a truck (spend focus on attack) OR be defensive (keep focus for defense). I think the concern is that spending his Evade to add a damage clues your opponent into the fact that, "Hey, this pilot is dangerous, and now he has no tokens. Let's destroy him!"

Carnor Jax, Juke, Hull Upgrade + Autothrusters

Lose positioning, gain stress-resilience and double down on your game plan.

Hell, fly him with a Fleet Officer and/or Palps and he'd be downright scary.

While I have seriously been considering EH and EI together on Fel in the current meta, the following would be interesting:

(33) Soontir Fel - Rage, Autothrusters, Experimental Interface, Royal Guard TIE

Four focus tokens, an evade token, and rerolls on offense.

A ****-nasty stack of focus tokens, but the problem is that once you pull that you're essentially removing the potential for further actions. Which really hurts on a TIE interceptor. If he has some means to bleed them off afterwards (Epsilon Leader or Wingmen) or had the ability to retain the tokens, fine.
