Did you wander

By martini74, in X-Wing

With the big season of store championships, there were plenty here in central Texas, and the ever dragging delay of ware 8, did you play other game systems more than x-wing? I know most of us have other games we play, just wondering if you spent more time on the other systems than x-wing. I know I did. The local game store started a Malifaux campaign, and it was fun, almost over. I purchased, built, and painted a new crew as well as played during the event.

So, three questions.

1. Did you stray away from X-wing?

2. What game?

3. What game systems do you play other than X-wing?

My answers:

1. Yes, as described above

2. Malifaux. The Crossroad Seven box is so much fun for me.

3. Malifaux, maybe my favorite system of all (setting, feel, look, mechanics), 40K (Catachans, because I have had the army so long, I usually only play three games a quarter).

Yep. The "competitive" X-Wing BS was getting too thick for my tastes. Not so much the list building, testing, and playing to win, mostly the "SERIOUS X-WING PLAYERS" that suck the joy out of the room with their ridiculous attempts to have you believe X-Wing is some perfectly balanced wonder like chess and authoritatively declare their mastery of the game and absolute knowledge of what builds are crap or not. I enjoy competing as much as the next guy, but some of these guys have literally no lives other than X-Wing. Too much for my liking and frankly, it's just not true that the game is perfectly balanced. No game will ever be. It's better than most, but there are huge, huge, huge holes that point to the obvious fact that it is not fully balanced.

We play all sorts of other games. I'm usually the one who procures new board games to try. We have an Edge of the Empire campaign, we've played campaigns of Shadows of Brimstone and Eldritch Horror, gotten in several games of Blood Rage, Forbidden Stars, Xia, Level 7: Omega Protocol, and more. I have probably 6-8 games Kickstarted that will arrive throughout the year. Clearly, X-Wing is just one of many games we enjoy. Absolutely one of the best, but hardly the only dog in the fight for my time and interest. If I had my druthers, I'd probably continue to run campaigns of dungeon crawly action RPG type games over X-Wing, but several distinct groups of friends love X-Wing, so it maintains a healthy spot in the rotation.

1. Did you stray away from X-wing?

2. What game?

3. What game systems do you play other than X-wing?

1. Yes.

2. WHFB, 40K and SAGA.

3. WHFB, Kings of War, 40K, SAGA, Armada, Epic, Hail Caesar, Mordheim, Battlefleet Gothic, and probably a couple more I can't remember right now.

I decided not to go to Store Champs this year. Just wasn't interested.

1) no but I cut down. Fewer game nights out and only one store championship. I've already registered for multiple regionals though so I'll be building back up. More importantly I've cut down a lot on purchases.

2) armada. And a real life motorcycle that eats time and money.

3) see above? Armada is more of a beer and pretzels game where I own one 400 point list for each side. Get my friends beer and then teach them a complex miniature game.

1. No, I'm a dad so I don't get a lot of time to play. If I get to an event once every other week I'm burning through brownie points quick.

2. Princess Sofia Royal Prep Academy Board Game, my daughter won't stop playing it.

3. Mostly casual board games. No other miniature or competitive games.

I have a job that doesn't allow me to go to most local gaming nights to play Xwing, it's a shame because I love the game on a casual level and have a handful of "fun builds" I still really enjoy playing. The repetitive outcome structure did get to me though, so I strayed to things with more randomness involved.

1. Yes!

2. Imperial assault, Magic. Both I can play with friends and especially my girlfriend who lives with me. Magic is good for a quick game, Imperial assault is usually more of a planned even.

3. Imperial Assault, Magic.

I like the card draw mechanic in Imperial Assault and Magic, which makes you have to come up with a strategy on the fly (Imperial assault making it so you never know what map you'll even play on). They also highly reward action economy to an insane degree while Xwing is more forgiving overall if you mess up with Regen or cut and run reactionary boosting/br. The thing Magic and Xwing have most in common is "control" builds are a strong strategy against most players.

Store Champs and new stuff actually brought me more back in. We have a ton a new players and it's been fun growing the game. And now we can record Kessel Run on a more regular basis so good stuff all around.

Malifaux is still my favorite game. I love the minis, the fluff, the feel of the game, the character. It's just great. I recently became a Henchman so I'm running demos and tournies now. Whereabouts in central Texas are you guys? We're in DFW, but I'd love to visit other areas for tournies and such.

(I assume we're just talking about tabletop wargames here)

1. X-Wing is my most-played game, but I'm not monogamous to her.

2. Warhammer 40k is the other tabletop wargame I spend a lot of time on.

3. I like 40k, but I can't say I like the game system. More recently I've been playing Infinity and Warmachine, which are more "modern".

1. Did you stray away from X-wing? - Yes. Tired of playing against people testing their next competitive build and mopping the floor with my casual 'let's just see how this works' build. List building takes too long.

2. What game? Various: Ogre DE; Wings of Glory: Imperial Assault; Mayfair Cosmic Encounter; Settlers of Catan; Ticket to Ride;

3. What game systems do you play other than X-wing? Mixing it up with miniatures and board games now.

1. Did you stray away from X-wing?

2. What game?

3. What game systems do you play other than X-wing?

1. No, did well this season so far.

2. N/A.

3. Various boardgames & RPGs.

Oh, I should've answered the other questions.

1) No to any SC

2) I played X-wing, but played an Epic ship campaign and started the HotAC campaign. Great fun!

3) The only thing in the past year besides X-wing that I've played is Battlegroup, a WWII game. It's fun every once in a while.

I'm so sick of just tournament level X-wing that I'm starting a podcast about casual based X-wing. I want to bring back fun games that move beyond 100 pt deathmatch.

1. Yes. To be honest, I've never really been "faithful" to X-wing. I play casual only, and I play a lot of other games.

2. Babylon 5 Wars, Armada, & Zombicide have eaten a lot of recent game hours.

3. All of the above plus: USX, Lord of the Rings SBG (GW), Sails of Glory, Wizards' Star Wars Miniatures, Star Trek Fleet Captains, D&D, & I just started into Firefly.

1) nope, haven't played against a list yet that killed the fun for me, even playing 'casual' lists against 'meta' lists

2) nope

3) not many really. Mostly xwing with some magic sprinkled in.

Right now wife and kids are in Japan visiting her parents, so that opened up a lot of time for me.

Been playing a ton of xwing, and was able to attend two store championship, and a winter kit. (Got third in first store championship, 9th at winter tournament, and won the second store championship)

I'll be heading to Japan end of March and once we are all back will cut my play time down a lot

Frankly though I'm starting to feel burned out I'm afraid.

Maybe just need a little rest, don't know, but after Regionals (if I go, still not sure) I may take a much needed step away to pursuit more important things like moving to Japan which will not be easy since I don't have a BA which now seems a lot Companies want you to have to teach English. (years ago is wasnt so much required, or so I'm told)

There is a few of us who play, and we play other games, One guy has bought all of armada, (enough to make two fleets out of one faction) and we must have near 20 boardgames from space cadet/Catan to twilight emperium/axis and allies and soon rebellion.

started collecting Star Trek attack wing ships.. needed to get my plastic crack fix some place...!!! seriously I thought the ships are cool. not as well done as the Starwars ships but cool because there are so many of them!! And truth be told i have always liked Star trek slightly better than Starwars. However i haven't played the game yet just dont see how Star Trek ships can "Dog fight" that said I did play Starfleet battles in the past and it was pretty cool....back then. On a related note the "OP" kits for the Attack wing game seem have cooler prizes... as in new/different ships!! and or attack dice ship resource cards etc. cool stuff besides plastic tokens or an alt art card coin medal. However it also seems that one HAS to play in the Ops to get the cool stuff and that kind of sucks as it feels like you are FORCED to play in order to stay competitive with the latest and greatest stuff. i mean that happens a little bit with Star wars too..

Store Champs and new stuff actually brought me more back in. We have a ton a new players and it's been fun growing the game. And now we can record Kessel Run on a more regular basis so good stuff all around.

I am in Killeen TX. Battlefield games. A military town, so game systems here have up and downs due to the transient nature of deployments and people leaving the area.

I work a job that is from 1 p.m. till we are finished, usually about 1 a.m. or so. Four days a week, so, i usually get to play on my days off, mon/tue/fri.

Malifaux is a decent size group here. Maybe a dozen or so with a few from the begining an some newer players.

I'm so sick of just tournament level X-wing that I'm starting a podcast about casual based X-wing. I want to bring back fun games that move beyond 100 pt deathmatch.

I'm glad it's not just me. Playing the 100 point deathmatch in a six rock asteroid field, over and over and over again, game after game... I don't know how people do it! I'd go crazy from the boredom!

I strayed away from 40k to x-wing.

I play other systems:

Batman skirmish

Armada

Battletech/alphastrike

FoW

Odd game of heroclix my mate provides the models

Might look into prostrate.

Thing is you burn out only playing one game it's good to cleanse the palate every once in a while.

I thought WHFB is replaced with some Sigmar thing?

ASL is my lifestyle game. X wing is a minor diversion, fun to play with my son. Play other stuff with wife and kids, Settlers, Ticket to Ride, and such.

1. Yes

2. Leviathans - one of my favorite games. One of the only games where each additional advanced rule has only made the game more fun.

3. WFRP, Pathfinder, Formula D

I thought WHFB is replaced with some Sigmar thing?

Yeah, but I've been playing WHFB for more than 20 years, it's not like GW sent the games police to come and confiscate all my old rule books and models and stuff. All the people who used to play WHFB still have all their stuff, and we get the odd game in here and there. I'm trying to convert the player base over to Kings of War since it's a better game in nearly every way, and still supported by the authors (so less need for house-rules to address problems) but without much luck at the moment.

1. Did you stray away from X-wing?

2. What game?

3. What game systems do you play other than X-wing?

1. No, I did not "stray", as X-wing and I do not have an "exclusive" relationship.

2. Force on Force, Johnny Reb III, Holy Hack, Wings of Glory, Check Your Six, Full Thrust...

3. All of the above plus: General Quarters 1&2, Ironclads, Wooden Ships & Iron Men, Imperial Assault, Catan... pretty anything that does not come from GW

Did you wander

Over yonder?

And check out this and that?

But in all seriousness I do like dabbling in random board games (and magic)
