New player seeking help

By Chillmire, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey everyone, a fresh-of-the-press X-wing player making his first post on the forums. I'm looking for a bit of help in list building

So I've bought myself into the hobby and I have to say that I'm really enjoying the game so far and it makes a pleasant change from the likes of Warhammer 40k and Bolt Action. Top notch, very fun games with a lot of fluidity. I live somewhere that despite being fairly out of the way has a decently sized gathering of existing X-Wing players who've been very helpful in getting me into the hobby and teaching me how to play.

There's only one small problem.

Being existing X-Wing players with a nearby source of second-hand upgrade cards bought on the cheap, they tend to run lists that I as a new player struggle against (even with the TIE/fos I have sitting on my desk) with my limited collection and though it's been fun, I've not yet built up to the squad I'm quite happy with both in terms of gameplay and aesthetic.

Now, the Empire is my jam. I love TIE Interceptors, and I love Rebels. The issue with this is that the Inquisitor's TIE hasn't been released yet (here) but I do plan to add him my group of Interceptors, and then buy some upgrades on a budget. Knowing full well that due to the Inquisitor's unavailability, I was wondering if some veterans could give me some pointers. I'm looking for a list that I both like the look of and can compete fairly well on a casual-but-apparently-not-casual level, so I'll just plaster it right here;

The Inquisitor – 25
TIE/v1 – 1
Autothrusters – 2
Push the Limit – 3
– 31pts

Soontir Fel – 27
Royal Guard TIE – 0
Stealth Device – 3
Autothrusters – 2
Push the Limit – 3
– 35pts

Carnor Jax – 26
Royal Guard TIE – 0
Stealth Device – 3
Autothrusters – 2
Push the Limit – 3
– 34pts

Total: – 100pts

Having watched more experienced players game both in our store and via Youtube I've picked up a few ideas and gimmicks from that - but in my hands they're just that, ideas and gimmicks. From a gaming perspective the list looks good, but I have no idea what it might be lacking other than durability. I considered perhaps swapping the Inquisitor out for Valen Rudor and adding some missiles, but the Inquisitor's pseudo-range one ability really snagged me.

Any help that you guys could give would be greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance!

The list looks good, I would just recommend practice. I play Rebels and when I first started last year I kept playing a guy who is phenomenally good at flying arc dodgers, he won our store championship a couple of weeks ago. After playing him a bunchI find that I clean house on new players flying arc dodgers because I am well practiced in flying against Soontir and Vader etc. and a new inexperienced player makes exploitable mistakes.

I started my x-wing life as Imperials (with soontir before autothrusters) so let me warn you:

There is a learning curve. Your ships tend to explode when you mess up a maneuver. Imperials (which are typically all high agility low hp ships) are far less forgiving.

Just keep that in mind that you will be learning how to fly. I went a couple of months before actually winning a game, but I still had fun none the less.

Beyond that, the list is solid and would probably do fine competitively. But it will rely on you being able to out-fly your opponent. It's just practice to be able to judge the distances appropriately and pre-planning your moves.

Thanks for the tips guys :)

So far I've been flying with what I have available (that is to say, Interceptors, TIE/fos and a Firespray-31) and I've noticed a sizable difference when it comes to maneuvering Interceptors over regular TIEs and large ships, and so far the issues I've had are largely with dodging other large ships. One player in our store likes to run Vader in a Decimator with Soontir which I've found to be very painful and has been the list I've struggled most against, while another plays a double Firespray. Quite intimidating but I've always been a fan of learning how to swim in the deep end.

I'm glad that the list seems to work well competitively, will have to see when the Inquisitor arrives next week. I'm already feeling the urge to try out a themed Ghost & crew list running the Phantom and a B-Wing (which may be a better list for a beginner?) but I'll keep on practicing and let you know of the progress, although that would probably be more suitable for the Battle Reports section.

Thanks again!
