Road to legend

By Volkren, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I join your conversation about FFG policy with the CK, and while I fully understand those who already own the 1st Edition of Descent (which I don't, I remember seeing it at a local game store back to 2004) and feel a bit "pissed" by what is actually going on, I who don't own that first Edition, I of course don't feel stolen by their H&M Packs (oh wait, every time you guys use those initials, I think about that swedish clothes Markets : H&M). My question would rather be : are there so few differences between the old heroes/monsters sheets and the new ones ?

Well minis are different and the abilities (heroic feats) of heros and monsters got changed. Some of the heros and monster were too strong or weak and got reworked.

First I will apologize to ALL for getting heated, as it's really just a silly waste of my time.

And while I wont address every point above, because I know I make long winded posts...but c'mon man!

The CK is not broken as some suggest. They sold an optional product so that players who own all the 1st Ed content could use all their miniatures. They did this so their customers would no feel left out when they released the 2nd Edition. This would also facilitate those 1st Ed players to continue purchasing their products. The H&M packs are not a "cheap way" to screw over people with the CK. Just like the 2nd Ed is not a cheap way to screw over their 1st Ed customers. It's a new product, new figures, based on those from 1st Ed, with new cards.

Why you act lke this is irrational and "the end of the world" is beyond comprehension. With very minimal work you can:

1. Convert your existing CK cards with all the info out there (most of it released by FFG themselves, for a product they're hoping you would purchase)

or

2. Just use the CK as is, again, with minimal modification to the instructions provided by the app.

There is even a short section in the RTL rulebook called Decision Making, you could apply that very principle to the content you own and still enjoy the app. I fail to see how FFG has screwed it's fan base by providing options and support for an outdated product that would prevent part of it's fanbase from actually purchasing new products they're coming out with.

No one is forcing anyone to buy any of this... seriously what the hell?

So, for all my initial angry reaction to the disappointment with the Conversion Kit.... I have to say that the app is actually incredible.

It's made actually playing Descent a real joy.

And I hear the latest campaign is free?

If so, **** you FFG - you know exactly how to win me over!

I've been waiting to play Road to Legend until Kindred Fire comes out. I have a few questions if anyone is willing to answer.

  1. Do heroes recover health and stamina at the end of a quest? I know this is the rule for normal campaigns. I wasn't sure if RTL was different.
  2. When a monster activation list ends in "[Action] If within two spaces of a hero, perform a move action and retreat". Let's say a ranged monster spotted a hero by moving 1 space to be within 3 spaces of the target hero. The monster attacks. After the attack, the monster still has some movement points left unused. Does the monster retreat at this point? Because the retreat step is listed with an action, would it only retreat if it first didn't have to spot the hero but immediately attacked?
  3. Does the game save mid-quest? My wife needed to go to bed half-way. I didn't want to risk losing our progress so I went ahead and finished the quest off.
  4. [Minor spoiler] In Kindred Fire, at the end of the first quest when a unique monster was placed, it didn't say anything about placing minion monsters of that group. When that monster group activated, it showed me minion monster activations. After defeating the unique, it still seemed to think there were minion monsters on the board. Did I miss something or is this a bug?

We had a pretty good time! In our first quest, we had to defeat 5 monster groups, the unique monster, and the lieutenant character. Pretty epic!

1) yes, and discart search cards and conditions. the tutorial quest explain this step.

2) well, if you complete the requirements of the 2 commands, don't need make the third step. But you can make your decisions there.

I particularly use the movement points left to retreat for a tactical approach for the monsters.

3) save in the beginning of each round. But I need to confirm after the last update.

4) spawn only the master as the app says. The app keep tracking the entire group because sometimes more monsters of the same group spawn, and they only activate one time per round. Just hit the defeat group button in this cases.

Ah. Kindred Fire didn't give us the option to play the Tutorial Quest so we missed that.

Thanks for the answers!

It looks like the rule book has been updated since it's original release and now answers question 1. See page 10 "End of Quest".

3) save in the beginning of each round. But I need to confirm after the last update.

This is correct. Can confirm as we have often had to stop in the middle of a quest and pick up later. Just remember that you will have to keep track of the positions of elements on the map (heroes, monsters, etc) and any search cards and conditions you have drawn (we just take pictures with our phones of everything between sessions).

Also note that the update notes for the updated version of RtL that released with KF said that the app now also saves after EVERY item you purchase in the shop.

Hello everyone,

I've got a non-rule question :

How do you organize your table while playing Descent and RTL ? Because I feel a bit "surrounded" by all the material around (tiles, cards, figures, etc.) yes I use all the chairs I can to put all the boxes I use, but still.

Thank you :-)

Remains of last night's game. Two players each controlling two heroes. We used the laptop for the RTL.

I found a couple things help. Here is a bead box I found that is perfect for the condition cards and the bits you use a lot.

Then all my monsters are in planos with alphabetic labels lol... (The small ones at least.) I just got so tired of searching.

Lastly - my map tiles are in accordian file folders labeled 1-5, 6-10, etc... Spread out enough to make sure they do not bend etc.

Can see it all here... The monsters were pre-alphabetized and before I pulled out all the stuff I didn't need for RtL... Overlord decks etc.

I'm traveling - otherwise I would send better pictures. :P

Thanks for both your answers,

@ trevorade : I have a similarly table at the end of a game. I should also use my laptop with the app instead of my Ipad-mini...

@ SoylentGreen : Waw Oo That is an organization :-D I should definitely take your precious advice in count ! :-)

I have the same type of organization :) . I put the tilers in zip bags.

I have a fold-able table with a poker table on top. The padded edges makes a comfortable arm rest and the 'wood' border fits character cards perfectly.

404H61l.jpg We use one side to hold counters and minis and place the map on the other half while projecting the app on my Samsung 75" 4K TV from my Surface Pro 3.

Love that set up bro!

Where did you get that table and how much $?

Hey! Costco in Canada $100 I was going to buy a Geek Chic $$$ table and my wife did 5 minutes of googling and said why don't you try this. No regrets

I should mention the ambient sounds and narration are pretty sweet @ 7.1.

Stop you pls :D :D :D

Very nice set up indeed, seems practical, comfy and easy to fold up and put away. Thanks for the link!

Easy to fold up yes but it's been on the table with Descent on it since I got about a month ago. I have hardwood in my basement so i just drag the table off the rug to another area to watch TV.

Is there any chance that Road of Legend has a version in Spanish?
