Road to legend

By Volkren, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I just got this app a couple days of ago. It's so timely, I was looking at my collection and thinking that I was going to have to move it downstairs and make room for new games.

Then another player pointed out this app and after running a quick test session talked my wife into trying it out with me.

Now we are playing the campaign and I'm happy that the game will make it to the table a lot more in the future.

On the flip side I have sooo much painting ahead of me. :)

Thanks to FFG for putting the time and resources into making this app. I look forward to all expansions.

I plan on picking up the base set in the next couple of days. Is that enough to get a good amount of use out of the app or are there some expansions that would make it much better experience?

The base set its fine with the app. But if want more diversity, has this priority:

1) Monsters

2) Classes

3) Conditions, itens, more heroes, etc

4) Lieutenants packs

The big and small expansions can bring all this in some degree.

For me, monsters and conditions have a big impact in the app.

Please consider making a WP10 App.

As kraisto said, the base set is enough for the first campaign... but it's a pretty short campaign.

The next campaign "Kindred Fire" has also no restriction (at the moment at least) so I guess it still will only use the standard game parts.

But there COULD be campaigns in the future which require more than the base set. In my opinion you should start with the expansions in the order they hit the store, if you want to get more.

You could also just buy the expansions with the monsters/classes/heros you like in it...

I think being able to vary the peril would certainly help new players, experienced players could also get an "Epic" mode this way too.

I've enjoyed the print and play games and this app is a a fantastic version of that. In fact I hope they put that content in here.

The one thing they really need to crack though is a way to play the campaigns from the box sets. If they could incorporate RedJaks Automated Overlord mechanism they'd have that! It would help pull people into the app and potentially purchase more of the in-app campaigns.

Is the app quite good at using tiles and monsters from the expansions? I'm considering buying some expansions to use with the app but would be less keen if they rarely get picked by the app.

Monsters - yes, it's quite good at using them. The quests have some monsters that always appear and "open groups" that are selected randomly. If you have a lot of monsters from expansions they will be hit often.

Lieutenants - so-so. They can appear as perils, and the more Lieutenants you have the less often they'll appear. You are not guaranteed to get Lieutenant peril in each quest, so they will still appear only occasionally.

Tiles - no. Each box adds sidequest that uses tiles for that box. Other than that I don't think you'll see the tiles anywhere else.

I haven't got any of the expansions - are the expansion tiles quite specific for the expansion quests then? That seems a bit of a shame.

The problem is that they would need to ship the parts they use in multiple expansions in every expansion they are needed in...

Customers could get angry if they buy the base game and a random expansion in a shop and read something like: "you can't play this, because you need like 3 tiles from another expansion which you don't own"

So FFG seems to have to decided to not do that at all (till now at least....) I want to have a big campaign which features other expansions and stuff.

With the RtL app this could be possible...

I feel they kind of dropped the ball here. The app allows them so much more freedom, yet they do not use it.

If you take a look at the print on demand co-ops, you randomly shuffle a stack of encounters and place 3 major encounters into it.

How hard would it have been to replace that stack with a pool of encounters the app could choose from, and with each expansion you add to your collection 1-3 new encounters (using the tiles from that expansion) would get added to that pool. Then any quest would have the possibility of using expansion tiles, without bothering people that don't have them. Something they couldn't really do with the PoD Co-ops.

Yet from what I've read, they chose a much more limited approach, with fixed quest layouts and no randomness except for monsters. (Again, from what I've read. So far the app hasn't appealed to me enough to make it past the tutorial)

Remember that Familiars are treated as heroes for Monster Activations and Attacks. They however ignore Peril and do not count towards your Pool of Morale.

I remember seeing the peril but didn't find the treat as heroes bit. Found it now in the appendix.

It does mean though that Challara as a geomancer can really screw with enemy AI leading them back down corridors away from the party. I'm going to try it!

Also note this very important rule:

Appendix II

Figures Treated As Heroes:

When a monster is instructed to target a hero, tokens that can be targeted

by attacks and figures treated as heroes are included as possible targets.

For the purpose of targeting, if a familiar or attackable token does

not have the statistic the monster is targeting, that familiar or token is

considered to have a value of 0 for the corresponding statistic.

Example: A barghest is instructed to attack the hero with the lowest (Might).

Widow Tarha and her reanimate are both adjacent. The reanimate does not

have a (Might) value listed, so it is considered to be 0. Because Widow Tarha’s 2 (Might)

is greater than the reanimate’s 0, the barghest attacks the reanimate.

During our first play-through I really gimped my poor Geomancer, Master Thorn, got too caught up in the excitement I guess... :P

Yep, this is correct Atom. They exactly adopted the approach of the take off the overlord role in a regular campaign, and it is what was promised.

I have no complaim in this approach, but it's very limited and they can improve every other aspect of the gameplay in the app if they want.

I would also like to see full campaigns down the line that require a certain expansion. Each expansion has a theme and map tiles associated with them. I own everything released so far so it would be great for me. However I do understand why this won't happen until perhaps further down the line, as not everyone went as crazy as I did buying all the expansions, and this app is introducing the game to a whole lot of new players. You don't want to turn off your fanbase by restricting most of your content.

If they keeping bring exclusive sides quests for every expansion on future campaigns will be a nice touch  (yes, I have everything, minus a certain king of all goblins that yells: Not Me !!!)

I am not sure, but maybe they can see how many percent of app user have certain expansions in their collection (in the app).

If they see many people have certain expansions they may make an app campaign using those tiles and stuff.

Yeah I think that's fair.

The app hasn't even released it's first real campaign (content), yet we treat the lack of specific content as a downside of the app, when there is no real (paid) content out to begin with.

Imo it's logical for FFG to release at least 2 full campaigns for the base set alone and only then start to release campaigns for speciific expansions (maybe the most owned ones). When people really finish their second full campaign I think they most likely will have one or two expansions regardless hence it makes sense to do expansion campaigns at that point in time, because they will feel fresher.

before we continue discussing I move to make it official that The Worst Exotic Merriod Inn is without question the best name any Descent Quest has ever had!

Now back to the side quest, if you read the rule book on page 11 under side quests they make mention of in-app purchase, perchance a side quest bundle?
