Road to legend

By Volkren, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I think that FFG would play test this and there won't be some massive exploit with round effects. It's obvious that FFG likes the tweaks they made to the Descent system for IA and it was well received by the masses, so they will forge ahead and if you don't like it well you don't have to use the app that is the beauty of it. It's hard to discuss and argue this mechanic on a Descent forum where the majority of people have not played IA to the extent that maybe some of us IA first, Descent second, people have. But from someone who has played both I can tell you that I think the IA system is superior in both mission progression and strategic challenges. And we can argue this until we are blue in the face, but that is how I feel. And I think that MOST people who have given IA a fighting chance and play it regularly will agree with me. I know it is hard to accept change, but I highly doubt FFG will leave you high and dry with certain abilities unexplained, there is always a way to fix things. BUT, there will definitely be challenges against an automated AI, one of which like others have said being well which space do I move to if it just says to move 4 spaces away? This is something that I am sure FFG is working on, reading about here on the forums and is play testing to tell us about in a future update.

The sky is not falling, there is still a lot they need to reveal about this app before it launches and I will wait to pass my judgement until then. It is definitely fine to speculate and raise concerns, but I would hold off on damning it to the abyss based off your interpretation of an un explained rule or mechanic.

Oh you can count me decidedly on the side who is very enthusiastic about this app. I cant wait to try it out!

My only concern with alternating turn structure is, as stated, any change that may upset the balance of all the class/monster skills already designed for the game as is. As long as nothing becomes to OP or Nerfed and they keep round integrity then I'm sure it will work fine and just add another layer to whats shaping up to be a fun new game mode.

I have yet to play SW: IA, it looks really interesting and I'd love to try it out. I'm sure the alternating turns make for an interesting change in strategy.

I'm very open to the idea of playing a co-op dungeon crawler type game mode using descent rules. The PoD co-ops were lots of fun. The fact this app plans to support more co-op adventures, a campaign system to link those adventures and support for all expansion we physically own is just plain awesome.

If alternating turns, perma-death and peril work really well in the app FFG May do a printed expansion with those rules.

That is the beauty of this, they are making this off existing content and still have physical expansions coming down the pipeline for the traditional game mode. This is a FREE app with a nominal purchase of $9.95 for a full length campaign. They are basically doubling the content of the stuff you have already bought. And people still find a reason to complain, lol. It just goes to show you truly can't please everyone and some personality types just love the friction.

Yes, this is exactly what I'm worried about. I'm excited and worried about the app, but well, as it is said, we don't know anything yet. Well, I will keep an eye on this topic for any other news.

I registered just to say this is a great move. I can't wait. I hope this works out well and the same thing applied to Imperial Assault.

Alternating between overlord and hero turns is strictly a good thing.

It will remove much of the discussion between heroes as to who should act first. Since hero players will have less information to go on, there will be less deliberation and the game will feel less like a puzzle game.

If the hero players really "game the game", there was basically no chance at all that the overlord would win. Easily one-shotting the enemies, and denying the overlord any actions meant that correct hero activation would obliterate the overlord. This further added to the puzzle mechanics of the game since some hero team tactics were strictly better than others, and the game felt more like it was about finding these than to play the characters.

With an alternating structure, the game will be smoother, the overlord won't have to wait for as long to play and it would if anything buff the overlord, since there is less of a chance of the heroes killing entire groups of his units.

After playing imperial assault I decided that I will play descent in the same way, for these reasons.

I will be happy to play the OL. You and your friends can play heroes, and "game the game". I assure you that I will stand a very good chance of beating you.

I just wish they'd hurry up and make it available!!! :)

Waiting for a similar app for Star Wars Imperial Assault

Yes please! I have all of Imperial Assault and my son loves playing with me.

Just bought Descent because I heard of this app. Will LOVE playing with my son on the same team with this app.

When is the App coming out?

Bought Decent today so 1st game tomorrow.

The app is scheduled for end of April according to FFG's instagram.. however could always be delayed a little but it shows us they are working on it for 'soon'.

There are existing Co-Op Descent quests you can pick up already though to tie you over.

I too bought Descent 2nd edition because I heard of this app. I also hope that they port it over to IA. I have purchased a couple of the Coop adventures to tied me over until the app is released. I often have to play these games solo as my family prefers simpler games but I'm slowing getting them to come around.

I enjoy so much the coop style of descent and of course i'll use this app playing solo or with friends.

I am wondering, what about an app to play the opposite? i was used to play as hero with friends and having my brother as OL, but, once he stopped playing due to time, i became the new OL of my group but i'm not as good as him. It could be really nice to have an app to play solo as OL to learn and improve how to manage it.

So again about this app, i think it is a really nice job from FF. And if it is free, i have nothing else to say. Awesome! :)

I realize reading some posts that launching IA has, far from putting an end to Descent, lured new players, due to the attractive Starwars theme, into the game style of Descent and familiarized them with it. And now people are buying Descent cause they may want to play a variant of IA in an Heroic Fantasy World, experiencing something new but still manageable as they know a part of the basic rules. Sure a lot of players have gone to IA for a time, but they may come back to Descent for the app for example. In that way the whole community has been more or less reinforced.

Again, FFG gets all my respect for their deep wisdom.

I am one of those people. I found out about Imperial Assault from a video on YouTube demonstrating the game at GenCon. I talked it up to several of my friends and we have been playing it for the last year and a half. Then I found out about Descent and this App, and I have already picked up the base game and several expansions.

IA and Descent are indeed incredible games that are worse the try :D .

Re: App. It has definitely breathed renewed vigor into our household. While we own a few expansions I have never obtained a Lieutenant or a Hero&Monster collection; we now have five of the first and two of the second, and Heirs of Blood to boot. ;) Would have been six of the first if I could have found that **** Goblin; I have spent more time typing the word Splig into google than I care to mention..

Anyways, 'The Cardinals Plight' this afternoon. Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Yeah. Trouble is Splig has the "Not Me !" ability so that you never get a hand on the king of Goblins...

First I would like to thank ffg for the upcoming app, I was really looking forward to a similar improvement for the cooperative mode!! :D

Nevertheless I am wondering if it would be possible to specifically select which types of monster to include in a campaign.

As far as I have understood the monsters will be extracted from the selected expansions but I would prefer to be able to select in advance which monsters (or tiles) could appear before the start of the quest/campaign.

Apart from the fact that sometimes I would prefer to choose which monster to face, it would be not so easy to organise games outside my house if I have necessarily to bring entire expansions with me. In the other hand with the POD adventures I had no problem at all for moving my stuff and to engage new players at game clubs. ;)

There is a remove from collection button in the app. The problem is that obviously will remove all the contents of that expansion.

Someone knows if the app will be in multilanguage format or only in english?

Thanks.

Are the maps even random generated in the App? (I am not sure, but I thought they are pre made or did they really make a kind of random generator which keeps in mind how many monsters/search tokens and so on are meant to be in a "balanced" dungeon?)

Also will there be an option for different languages?

I own the game in a different language and it's sometimes really bothersome to find out in which way some cards were translated to, because you can have different meanings/translations for some names and would have to check almost every card to be sure to have the right one (I am mostly talking about the many marked items.... which are a lot, because I own every expansion except the new one, because it's not available in my country yet.)

And is there a "Quest tracker" installed? (not only for the dungeons in the app, but for the old ones?)

I haven't found a post about these questions.... but I could have missed them. :P

I believe that there are different 'campaigns' that have a certain degree of randomization. Just like the PoD co-ops, but with more depth/content.

And for the language issues, how well does FFG translate things? If every Descent product so far has been translated I think it is safe to assume that this app will also be translated.

And how do you mean a quest tracker? Atom4geVampire has made this campaign tracker . This can only be used for the campaign and not the co-ops but the co-ops only take one evening anyway and I am very certain that the RtL app keeps track of your adventure.

Thanks for your reply Ceasarsalad101. :D

I just looked at the Quest Tracker from Atom4geVampire and saw you are right.... I didn't use it some time ago, because it didn't work properly on my IPad (I don't have a PC in the room in which my group plays in...) but it seems to work just fine now.

I also had problems to recognize which card/missions/skills are.

But it's pretty easy now.... (I can't believe how well I recognize the cards now, after playing for so many months...)

I should have looked at it bevore making my post....

You mean the German texts of the Cards? I think I can give you all the German names of the cards and skills and so on if that would help (I don't own any of the Lieutenant packs though and "Mists of Bilehall" hasn't been released in Germany yet).

Edit: Aaaand I just realised I don't own the quest book "Heir of Blood" and the coop expansions :P
