Road to legend

By Volkren, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I'm not so sure. It is true that this app in no way hinders the ability of anyone to continue to play Descent how is or her group prefers. However, it may suggest a new direction for the development of new content for Descent. For example, I assume overlord cards have no place whatsoever in this app. If development shifts to content created primarily for use with Road to Legend, it's conceivable that there will be fewer overlord classes developed. This app need not mean the end of overlord content (the recent release of "Mists of Bilehall" in fact shows a lot of love for the overlord) but it's a legitimate concern.

I think this app looks interesting, and I'm looking forward to its release. I've had the experience recently of playing Descent with someone who generally doesn't enjoy the overlord/hero competition. He dislikes playing as a hero and waiting for everyone else to take their turns, and feels victimized as an overlord. I understand his frustration, but we see Descent very differently, and appreciate different things about it. However, I think he (and others in my group) could really enjoying playing Descent using Road to Legend.

As I've said before, the overlord/hero dynamic is the best part of Descent in my opinion- it's what makes Descent worth playing (for me). This app could be rich, engaging, and fun- but its very reason for existence is to remove the aforementioned dynamic. Therefore, if (a giant, potentially unsubstantiated "if") this app represents Descent's future at the expense of overlord content, that's just unfortunate. If, on the other hand, this app exists alongside "traditional" Descent content, then it's a welcome realm of new possibility.

Thought I´d just drop a like on that post but I think it deserves quoting once more for emphasis. Besides the issue I have with app-technology in board gaming, Zaltyre pretty much summed up my concerns about the direction given by that move from FFG.

Road to Legend really appears to me as being a brand new game, and not a simple variant loosely listed in a floating paragraph at the end of a rules book. There are too many core changes to Descent to justify calling this a variant or game mode. The presence of the app itself confirms that fact. Therefore, FFG have basically put themselves in a situation where they have effectively branched out from the traditional D2E development, so that's a rift by definition in terms of future content. Even if there will certainly be crossovers. But barring all overlord-content from a given Descent expansion is like barring 40% of all content (assuming 40% hero content and 20% for the rest like the tiles and quest mechanisms). It will feed the app with tiles, monsters, and all sorts of things, but half the game is gone. Then sure, taken from the perspective of RtL, new stuff will be added, but that stuff will not be compatible with the traditional game (exploration, monster AI).

It has nothing to do with players' taste. I largely prefer traditional because I find mind-blowing to ever consider removing the OL mechanism, but you may prefer RtL for the full co-op or exploration, or you want to play both then it's all fine and all. But you cannot deny that both "games" will compete with each other in terms of future content, company focus (support, testing, budget), and even the community will be affected.

rescued from for sale pile and expansion added to basket again :-)

eagerly awaiting :-) what's the eta? weeks\months\ years?

I'm hoping that you can add Descent First edition expansions and the core set to this as well as Second edition stuff.

I´ll fill a form too so the app can have a tile to play an in-quest Blood Bowl match because that would be kewl.

For info, nearly all heroes and monsters from D1E are already in D2E if you didn't know already, but I´m sure FFG can design a D1E mode on the app taking 6 hours to play out. Just make sure you´ve charged your device to full before you play, lol.

Joke aside, people here disagreed with me when I said that the app could potentially destroy the game as we know it - although I don't quite believe this entirely myself - , yet people keep popping in here saying that the app should be made even more distant from the original game. I really don't know what we are talking about anymore.

FFG would be silly to just release an expansion for the app. They'll most likely continue boxed expansions for the base game which you can then use stuff from in the app...

I am wondering, how exactly would this app keep track of all the information like damage and such? There is no way that adding digital damage counters to monsters is any fun. Or maybe you don't? And only tell the app if a monster has been defeated? While I don't mind looking at a screen for information, I would mind to provide any information to a computer.

Edit: The AI cards for the co-op also have things that make a monster attack a hero with the least damage etc.

I might be missing something here, but is is looking like this app will only be usable for campaigns made specifically FOR the app? For example, will I be able to use the app to play as the Overlord in the base campaign that comes with the base game, letting me and my friends tackle it together without an Overlord player? Or is the app usable for app-specific campaigns only?

Unclear at this point. If there are in-app purchases (which it sounds like there are) I've got to assume that you wouldn't be purchasing the ability to play the physical campaigns you already own. It would seem likely those purchases have to do with app-specific campaigns. Whether or not the app supports a new way to play already owned campaigns (Shadow Rune, Heirs of Blood, etc) I do not know. I have not seen anything advertising that functionality.

In app purchases were confirmed.

In app purchases were confirmed.

I saw that. And I assume those purchase are for campaigns designed specifically for the app. I was just wondering if the app could be used to play campaigns that came with the game as well. Like Shadow Rune. This would just make it much more appealing to me.

Hear hear. I too can not fathom why some people feel so upset about this - it has exactly zero impact on them.

The game is three years old now. Its on its 6th expansion. How much longer did you think it was going to last? Especially with the competition building all the time? Maybe 1 more expansion? Two if you're really lucky? But this app boosts the popularity, and gives them a whole new reason to produce boxed apps - which is where the money is. It will probably bring in a whole new audience as well.

So, thats bad for the game is it? I take your point, but I'm sorry, I really don't agree with it.

Competition? There is only Imperial Assault and that fills the sci-fi theme but for fantasy? There are no other game as established as Descent with a strong role of overlord. You're welcome to come up with other names but I know already there is none and it's not even close.

But sure, start stripping the game off its overlord feature like they're doing with the app and I will suddenly +1 your post. There comes the competition because this time you have plenty of games trying to do the same thing. It's called co op dungeon crawlers and there are literally a couple of good ones launched on Kickstarter every year. Granted none of them have the edge of using an app (yet), but even the appeal of an app does not necessarily make a game better from a mechanical perspective. It may be this app will throw Descent on top of the ladder if they've done their job well, but it will still be challenged on regular basis by the constant stream of new games coming out.

Do people start to see why I think it's important to preserve the game's unique design instead of making it main stream?

Guys please don't reenact the "whistleblowers of the apocalypse" again . FFG will do with descent as they may, and the life in this thread is an indication of people's interest in RTL.. Let's just settle with "time will tell".

I still don't get why you insist that FFG is supposed to make bad business-decisions and why you insist that FFG can't make an expansion that targets both traditional and coop play. Imo the idea that both game-modes compete over the same design resources is totally unfounded and lacks any rational. After all, all their content so far is balanced towards the traditional style and still viable for coop, because they balance the content via the coop app. Why would they even want to change that? Why would they decide to not balance the content via the coop-app for just this one expansion and instead make it unusable for tradtional Descent? (while throwing off the balance to all the existing content)

I am wondering, how exactly would this app keep track of all the information like damage and such? There is no way that adding digital damage counters to monsters is any fun. Or maybe you don't? Edit: The AI cards for the co-op also have things that make a monster attack a hero with the least damage etc.

It doesn't track any gameplay information. It just shows you how to set-up the rooms and shows you the randomized cards from the coop-PoDs. For instance it shows you "Monstergroup Zombies: Attack the hero with the least damage" then you execute this action with the remaining figures in that group.

The only interaction happens when you open the next door (you press advance) or at the end of the hero turn (start OL turn). No other interactions during gameplay with the app seem possible from what we saw so far.

I might be missing something here, but is is looking like this app will only be usable for campaigns made specifically FOR the app? For example, will I be able to use the app to play as the Overlord in the base campaign that comes with the base game, letting me and my friends tackle it together without an Overlord player? So far it's only for app-campaigns.

Maybe you are missing something, but there are already 2 monsterpacks and 1 small box expansion announced, so I guess we are really, really, really lucky?

The matter of fact is that they will release expansions as long as they sell and they won't reboot the game just because it's already X years on the market, I mean why should they?

Also each expansion got better they released, so there really is a good chance the new expansions will be bought. Just look at the last one, which has been described as the best campaign so far and even introduced a completely unique gameplay-element to this campaign.

Please don't hate on Indalecio. He is just very emotionally invested in this game, so you have to understand that he has very strong opinions about this game's developments. I've read very good and insightfull responses from him and had productive conversions with him on this board, so... you are missing out on that if you ignore him just for being (over)passionate about this game, just saying.

Indalecio is one of the most frequent and insightful posters on the descent forum. While I may disagree with him on this topic I do respect his opinions.

hey guys! just wanted to chime in about how excited I am for this app... it's so great to have an official coop expansion of sorts that finally uses the huge stack of stuff I already have for Descent!!

The way I see it, the app will drive more boxed expansions. You'll still need the figures, monster cards etc to use them. People who are playing more will buy more stuff. As a purely anecdotal data point, I stopped buying expansions because I don't get the chance to play with the ones I've got. With a mode of play that is easier for me to enjoy (including solo play) I may well pick up new expansions. As long as it's all integrated, this should be a driver of more materials for Descent, not less.

I should probably thank you for reading this as it means you still haven't clicked on "ignoring" my posts on these forums :)

About the "bad decisioning", I do not think releasing an app for a game is a bad marketing decision, and I do not believe either that releasing a variant to a game that will appeal to many more players is a bad idea at all. If we look at this thread alone, the number of posters we have never seen posting here before seems to indicate that there will be interest far beyond the existing community, which is again hardly a bad thing.

Nobody (including myself) can make any real claim about the legitimity of this decision from a business perspective. However we can try to predict the impact of the publisher's decisions on the market, the existing franchise, future development and the community. Even in the improbable situation where FFG would make such a terrible decision so that it would sink a whole product line to oblivion, they could still make business out of it in some other way and turn it into profit elsewhere. After all we do see competition between games of the same publisher. So yeah, the point I´m trying to make is that we can hardly make any conclusion as for the possibility to lose business in this enterprise; let us say it is highly unlikely.

I´m sure every future addition to the franchise will have its use in both games (that is traditional D2E and Road to Legend). It may be that I wasn't clear about that, but there will definitely be some crossovers between the two. With this said, the lack of overlord and the addition of exploration in Road to Legend are very impactful changes, which is why I don't find unreasonable to claim that future expansions might be difficult to fully adapt to both game modes. My biggest worry is how will they code the overlord parts into the app. Say, the overlord AI holds a Web Trap, would it play it at the rightful occasion? You can certainly code a vast set of circunstances and events into the app, making the Overlord trigger the play of some effect, but it still won't be the same level of intelligence as for having a real overlord. That's the reason why I dislike the dumbed down version of the overlord RtL will present.

It could be that we will see a new form of expansions. Maybe ones that focus on hero and OL classes. I think that there are already enough hero en monsters available to enjoy Descent for a lifetime, and new classes are one of the community's biggest desire. Ideally, we would see boxed expansion continue, with the content adjusted to meet the community's desires and providing content for both modes of play. Traditional Descent and RtL both need classes, map tiles, and lieutenants on a regular basis to stay interesting.

Great! I think I'll try it on this FrogTrigger guy right now! Thanks!

Woah, woah guys look at my post, it was just an "example".. I am in no way incriminated here :D

This is only a positive for Descent based on the various reasons already listed in this thread. The best part about things like this is if you don't like you don't have to use it, so it has zero.. count that again, ZERO negative affect on your current game play. In fact lets look at the positive affect it will have, this app will drive sales, plain and simple. As they release more campaigns they will draw on the current expansions, forcing these new players to buy those expansions (pure speculation but tell me that doesn't make sense). The player base grows or in many cases returns to a game they thought was unplayable in their current situation. This will in turn produce revenue to continue expanding the app campaigns and content, as well as bringing in new physical expansions for EVERYONE on and off the app to enjoy. New life is brought into a game that was arguably on the decline in popularity, especially with heavy competition coming from SW IA and all the hype around it.

I am not talking about your hard core Descent fans, those people are loyal no matter what happens to the game, they could literally come out with an expansion that says "Indalecio is not a nice person" and he would still buy it, and I respect that, but I am talking about Joe Schmoe casual gamer that changes allegiances with the wind. They go with what is hot and lets face it right now Descent isn't hot, especially compared to the Disney hype train CHOOO CHOOO everyone aboard!

But FrogTrigger, these are two entirely different genres! Absolutely they are, fantasy vs. sci fi, two entirely different niches, over there and over here man not even close. The problem with that analysis is that while the genres might be different the game systems are identical, actually IA's is superior in a few ways. And like I said before, what is hot right now? What do you think the casual gamer is looking at right now on the shelf? That game based in the same universe as the record breaking billion dollar blockbuster franchise resurfacing or the ... what is it? Dungeons with Dragons? No I don't like roleplaying no thanks. HOWEVER, now they can look at it and go what the what, this game is full Co-Op with an app? So you're telling me I have the option of playing this with OR against my friends and family? Or even SOLO?!? Can I do that with IA as well..? What? No? Screw you Mickey!! I understand your resistance to adapting, many people get set in their ways and that is all, but I implore you to look at this from more than one point of view!
