Road to legend

By Volkren, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I found it odd that the article referred to story and side quests, it sounded more like a IA campaign.

I'm very excited about this app. I just bought a Descent collection (core, lair of the wyrm, labyrinth of ruin, most of the core lieutenants, first two heroes & monsters, conversion kit, first co-op) and I'm looking forward to getting it to the table. I'm currently working through Dungeon Saga and have a bunch of other dungeon crawlers/adventure games in my stable. This app will move Descent to the front of the list I think.

While I enjoy being the Overlord I also like to run co-op, especially with my kids. Thanks for this FFG and I'll echo the vote for an IA version.

I think this is great! I have a hard time arranging for my gaming group to get together for descent, but my wife and I really like playing. I look forward to easier and more varied co-op experience when just the two of us play.

But who are the heroes and the dragon on the artwork?

But who are the heroes and the dragon on the artwork?

Leoric and strange girl from core game front picture, I think so.

It looks like a great tool on the surface, however its been mentioned in previous posts that beyond the first campaigns the others will be chargeable, I really do hope this is not the case, as I would use this if it was free and here are my reasons why.

I try to stay away from board games that rely on devices or electronic equipment as these over time can become obsolete, either by not being supported any more or the devices required can break and render the game useless. Dice and card are a lot easier to replace should components get damaged, but in 20 years will the app still be available to run on the latest I pad or Android device.

I buy my games and will either use them for the rest of my life or at some time sell them in order to buy some new games. I won't be able to sell on an app and get back some of the cash I have spent for some new games.

In short to me the games I buy are an investment that will either give me many years of enjoyment or a bit of cash back to reinvest in my hobby.

Hopefully for me the app will be free and simply encourage fans of the game to invest in collecting the collection of expansions and not just encourage us to buy data.

The price point of this app will be critical for me. Also I use iOS tablets, so Android and Steam is too limited.

This looks great!

(However, it will never replace the real "Descent: Road to Legend" for me!)

An article has appeared on the Fantasy Flight website offering us much more details than the trailer video provided:

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2016/3/15/road-to-legend/

Turns out this actually isn't a campaign tracker, but an entirely new way to play co-op content, with app-generated AI and maps. Looks like additional DLC campaigns will also be provided. These are full-featured campaigns too, with shopping steps, rather than the one-off co-ops we've had up till this point.

Sounds great! I'm very excited :) This is a great way to get use out of all those lovely map tiles and monster groups when a traditional campaign isn't viable.

Just as I thought :)

Been trying to digest the news since this morning, but I am still chocked by the announcement. I am truly wondering what FFG are doing here again. What is their vision of this game? Is it to split the community in two, the old school guys and the new generation way of playing? How can you possibly reconcile that? Making the public broader by surfing the wave of trendy apps definitely feels like a purely commercial approach. Opening the wallet for data with a finite lifespan is not always trivial either.

I´m going to ignore this completely, for the better of the tradition me and my playgroups have been trying to hold on to. Once every week we leave our computers, phones and tablets to come and sit down, chat, speak to each other and play a board game. That's not being old-school, that's being considerate of the environment we live in and try to take some distance sometimes from the omnipresent audiovisual. Games with apps is just the opposite of what we are trying to do. So yeah, Descent was the name of that experience and from now on we´ll have to try to ignore that FFG are trying to throw it in a completely different direction. A bit like some music star you have been a huge fan of until that person claimed something completely contrary to your beliefs in public. Yeah that's how I feel right now.

App-based games are also cool the first few times, and then you realize that you rely on electronic to save your progress, roll your own dices, draw your own cards, then you need to update it, make sure you have power in it so it doesn't go poof in the middle of a game, etc. Cannot people do other things than click on things? That's my view of board gaming with apps, feel free to disagree for all I care FFG.

Then, even worse than that, I find mind-blowing that because of this announcement we suddenly have a few major problems with the game, like: the role of Overlord is now controvertial. Exploration has always been lacking. We did not have any tool for organizing expansions and campaigns, etc. Seriously?

I predict a Monopoly Descent next year and even a Yatzee version. Keeeewl !

Now it's fine if people feel more confortable not having an overlord, but then play another game. Why would FFG need to feel forced to provide an overlord-less version of the game? I design a game and then I break it into pieces to satisfy the masses? Don't designers have any respect for their own product?

This is great news!! I am a solo gamer and this opens up the Decent world to me like never before! Thank you!

So pumped for this, sorry I thought people knew about that article it has been up since this morning I would have brought it here sooner.

I think the ability to choose between playing with a OL or without is such a good idea by FFG. This is especially great for kids and bringing new players into the game/genre.

Nothing but good and positive things to say about all of it, good job FFG and thank you! And the best part about all of it is that if I don't like it, I really just don't have to buy it or pay attention to it. And I definitely don't have to try and ruin it for other people :)

I don't think they are trying to change the direction of descent at all. I think they are just offering an alternate way to play. I know for me with group I am always the overlord because no one else wants to be so this will give us a way to play where we can all be heroes. They will still continue to release expansions that require a physical overlord player as well. Also, my daughter is six and this way I can play with her and help her learn the game without playing against her. I for one am looking forward to this very much.

So kids or new players shouldn't learn to play games with competition between players?

Descent is co-operative. It's just you have a person playing the opposition. Why would this concept be harder to handle in a board gaming context? Wouldn't a clever overlord (which usually is also the rules master) be able to tailor his/her choices and actions to the hero opposition, making it a good experience to everybody?

I'm excited for the release of the app. I think it adds an neat option to the game.

I wonder if in this Co-op mode they will add a way to use hero skills that are OL cards related. I just like Elder Mok :(

I will always prefer a human overlord to an AI one, but I am fortunate to have a dedicated group that rotates overlords and plays multiple campaigns. Realistically, some groups simply do not have someone who wants to be the overlord or want a co-op adventure. I think the purpose of board games is to create a social experience. If AI is better handled by a computer but we still use our cardboard pieces, is that not the best of all worlds?

WOW such polarised comments!

I play board games for the simple fact that they allow us to sit around the table and communicate with each other. Video games just leech us into mindless button smashin (which can also be fun at times).

I'm suspicious but also grateful, my older player group enjoy having an overlord player - the younger one however (my sons) absolutely love the Co-Op expansions.

ACCESSIBILITY is the key word though. I appreciate that FFG are putting the effort in to reach out to a wider audience, If this tool can be used to introduce new players or allow me some more Descent time with my boys then bring it on..

We have a fantastic time with Xcom fighting a common enemy (LOUSY IPAD CHEAT!) and I'd love to see what this can bring to our table..

As a new Descent player, just played my first game a week ago, I'm encouraged by this as looking at all the 'Awaiting reprint' items I thought I got on the the boat too late.

A bit like some music star you have been a huge fan of until that person claimed something completely contrary to your beliefs in public.

Or like when Metallica did Load...or dare I say the black album? ;-)

I agree with Indalecio and mattflow and play Descent for the same reasons. Maybe it's because I have been staring at a monitor for literally 25-50% of the past decade.

Descent 2nd Ed is one of my all time favorite games but getting it on the table is tough. I don't have a lot of free time and when I get together with my board gaming friends we usually decide on a game together. Once in a while we play Descent but usually only one quest. Other times we play other games. The one person I get to play games with a lot is my wife. Playing Descent 1v1 doesn't work with us, but we do play co-op (both official and Redjak's). An app seems ideal for the player who really needs the co-op to get it on the table at all and has a very busy life.

If you're fortunate enough to have a regular game group that will play a whole campaign more power to you. I'm envious. I'm not quite that fortunate. An app that streamlines co-op descent means I get to play more of the game I love, even if it's not in its "truest" form. Having played all of the official co-ops, I am very much looking forward to the next co-op FFG comes up with. Having that co-op as an app is a very big added bonus.

I really hope there is just a tracker element to this app. I love the human element of an overlord and am completely uninterested in playing this game co-op. I like to pit myself against a tangible foe who I know wants to win just as much as I do and will do their best to beat me. No matter what I can't imagine the victory being as sweet as when I destroy the heroes as overlord or cut through his monsters as a hero. Victory over another human being just carries more meaning.

I think the most amusing thing about this announcement for me, is that they have the time, personnel, and money to develop an app for the game, but don't have the same to generate a competent FAQ.

As Indalecio indicates above, I really don't think there is any long term planning or direction for this game any more. It's sad, but I am truly thinking about giving up on this game.

So many good comments! Just by the activity on this thread we can see that this is big news! And it seems some people love the idea, some are intrigued, and some are against it.

I am intrigued to see if this turns descent into more of an rpg lite that some of us crave at times. Mainly, the exploration will be a total different way to play... it should be even better than the co-opportunity in this manner. This is not the original intent of the game, and yet many ayers create homebrew and variants bc the system does work well this way. For some of us, we use it to bring people into rpg's.

The ones who oppose this idea are purists, and I find myself agreeing with them. What is the difference between this and lego dimensions or infiniti where toys are placed on a base to facilitate the computer game... in other words, this just became a video game with alot of doodads.... well... ok... that is taking it a little far
