Tractor Beam and Corran Horn

By CalebML, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Is the Tractor Beam token removed from a ship before or after Corran Horn's second shot? The tractor beam is removed during the end phase, and Corran's second shot occurs at the start of the end phase, which makes me think his attack is the first thing that happens in the end phase.

you are right

FAQ states that corran shots before focus and evades are removes. It safe to assume also before tractor tokens are removed.

Unfortunately, the FAQ also states that the ship with the tractor token has -1 AG "in the combat phase".

Strictly speaking, even if corran performs his end phase attack while the ship still has the token, strict RAW, it doesn't reduce the agility.

Gotta go with FL on this one.

Oh FFS, how hard is it to catch this sort of thing before you send a card off to the printers.

Proofreading and quality control, two skills FFG sorely lacks.

You never know, it might have been on purpose. Getting Corran to double tap against lowered agility would be very powerful.

I don't think that's the intent of the rule.

I actually think that it is. FFG has been avoiding painting themselves into a corner with rules. NOT having the specific timing for effects like Crackshot allows them to errata the timing of the effect to adjust for power level.

That's well caught sir.

The rules also state you can only attack during the Combat Phase. Bu thte Golden Rules ensures Corran Horn Works. So anything that sayd during the combat pahse also applies to his attack in the end phase.

I don't think it is either. I was just pointing out that that is what it SAYS and preparing people for a new RAW/RAI argument.

RAW would disagree. There is no implication of such a thing anywhere, going by your example you could argue that if Corran shot with torpedos in combat he should double tap with torpedos too or should not double tap at all cause he has no more torpedos, that we both know is not true.

smidge

Second, printing cards that players can't figure out how to play because you're not sure how strong to make them is a TERRIBLE approach.

Third, this is a bad example. The base rules already define a standard timing window for modifying defense dice. In the absence of specific card text otherwise, you follow those.

RAW the new Reference card Errata states that during the Combat phase you lower the Agility of the ship by 1 for each token it receives. It doesn't actually state this modification ends with the Combat Phase. So it stands to reason that the modification lasts for as long as the tokens are present.

Actually, the new FAQ says to follow a special rule (lower agility) during the combat phase.

"A ship with at least one tractor beam token assigned to it follows special rules during these phases:

• Combat Phase: The agility value of that ship is reduced by 1 for each tractor beam token, to a minimum of 0."

yes it says exactly that. Lower the agility by one for each token it receives. Nowhere does it state that you apply this modification only to the end of the Combat phase. The card described the effect of the Tractor Beam Token. So when you assign the token during the Combat phase, lower the AG by 1. This effect lasts until the token is removed.

Actually it does. The use of the word "during" means that the modifaction only applies in the combat phase. The end phase is not "during" the combat phase.

If they wanted agility to be reduced by 1 for the entire round, they would have said "Until the end of round" or "Until the token is removed", but they specifically stated Combat Phase, probably to safeguard against abilities like Corran or other future attacks after Combat Phase.

No that is not where the 'during' is used. It says during the Combat phase follow the rule. So during the combat phase you lower the ships Agility by 1 for each Token assigned. Nowhere does it say that the Agility modification lasts only during the Combat phase.

If a ship receives 1 token during a Combat phase it is not -1 to Agility. During the end phase the token is removed. Now the ship no longer follows the rules on the reference card, and it's Agility is restored.

Given the phrase "A ship with at least one tractor beam token assigned to it", I believe FFG intended the first reading, and that it's a continuous test and the penalty ends when the Combat Phase ends.

(That said, originally, the "you can't shoot if you're on an asteroid" rule was also written to apply during the Combat Phase only, and ultimately got changed in the new rulebook because of corner cases like Corran Horn. I won't be surprised if the same thing happens here.)

During the Super Bowl, two football teams play. In the Post-game "phase", can the score change based on a penalty made during the "Game Phase"? Answer: No.

If it says the penalty lasts "during" the Comabt Phase, then without errata or FAQ it only lasts "during" the Combat Phase, not the End Phase.

Actually, SE raises a valid point. You literally have no permission to raise your agility back up to normal. At any point.

The only difference in your arguments is timing. By RAW it appears you lower your agi by one and it stays that way. Raising your agility back at any point is a house rule, so arguing over whose house rule is best is pretty pointless

The token does not apply a one time alteration to agility, it imposes an ongoing condition "during the combat phase". Outside of the combat phase the normal rules of the game apply, ie the ships agility is the green number printed on the ship card, modified by any other conditions such as stealth device.

While the ship has a tractor token, then it's agility is lowered "during the combat phase".

I believe this is the intention of the rule. It is not, however, what the rules say RAW
