Actually thinking about this,

Rhymer has 5 hull, Cluster bombs do 4 blue damage (hit plus crit), so may actually be the perfect weapon for wounding Rhymer badly, bringing attacking bombers into close range of the MC80 double AS weapons and their quad laser turrets......

Three MC80's in a row spamming projection experts, with the flanking MC80's carrying cluster bombs to royal screw with your rhymer ball.....

Posted in the wrong topic perhaps?

Nope, posted exactly where I meant. Read page 3.

This thread is for:

people crying that their Ackbar Frigates have actually been ruled as boring,

or that their ISD's dont have the uber objective that no one picked anyway,

and also for discussing the merits of MC80 spam with cluster bombs.

Didn't quite understand that, but OK, move along.

Multiple Cluster Bombs won't matter much, as the Ball will probably only ever attack one ship (killing one MC80 gets them a big enough Full Win, and trying to kill two in 6 Rounds could get the opponent into bad spots of over-aggression. But all three do need Cluster Bombs so that whichever one the ball decides to go after can use it's bombs).

It won't be anti-Rhymer tech, though. Any decent Rhymer player will simply opt to not attack with Rhymer rather than risk the 3 AVG damage the bombs would do to him. You only give up one black die to ensure that you're whole ball gets three to four solid rounds of bombarding. After a round or two of not triggering the bombs against Rhymer, the MC80 player will likely trigger them against something that's taken damage from anti-squadron fire, thus freeing up Rhymer to begin his own attacks.

Not to argue for Cluster Bombs, but in the example above those clusters would also keep the very likely included dengar from firing. Thats 1 black bomber one black non bomber a round being cancelled. Thats about two damage a round, not really a terrible inclusion for five points. Arguably, it might be the best option in that slot if rhymer ball is the only concern you have.

Of course, it wont be, and cluster bombs still suck. But its been a fun bit of theorycraft.
