Observations on the forums

By Serif Marak, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

she fascinates me in that she's blind and knows this game better than most of the rest of us

How does one (knowing the game better), have anything to do with the other (blindness)?

:D

She has to mentally visualize the game with practically no reference point. The rest of us, who can actually watch the movies, have a reference point.

This translates to the game, and allows for at least a little understanding of how the rules work.

But if you have a question on rules or how something should play out, Haley is one of the few you can take their word for without question.

She knows the **** game.

It's a compliment.

Stop trying to be confrontational.

Oh, look who's back and looking for something to get upset about! :D

(Angry/Confrontational words)

Stop trying to be confrontational.

Irony, at its finest.

On topic of the threat, I do see how the thread was "hey this is fun (unneeded confrontation added as a joke) yeah awesome!" and it became sidetracks/derails/confrontations at multiple angles, all turning it into a good example of most threads on this forum.

I agree it is fun to be surrounded by people that like similar things. I do wish that liking similar things meant there could be less fighting/anger related to differences of opinion of those shared items of enjoyment.

It's people like you that make me wish this forum had an ignore function.

You have thus far added 0 value to the conversation. You take me out of context and pick apart whatever doesn't suit you.

I've already requested that you stop posting here just to try picking a fight.

HAHAHA. Girl cooties. At least I'm not the only one who still uses that term! Thanks for making me laugh today PrettyHaley!

It does have an ignore function.

However, no one poster has any standing to demand that any other poster stop posting.

Oh, look who's back and looking for something to get upset about!

I commented multiple times on the threads topic, but also responded to your direct attacks by quoting YOU.

I took you "out of context" ? No, I took out the part where you derailed your own thread because the lines I quoted were directly related to the comment I was making about those comments. Saying "I hate fish. Grey bears are sillier to me than Brown Bears. Oh and fish are smelly too", does not mean that I have to quote the bear comment, when only referencing your stance on fish. The Bear comments were not relevant to the fish comment, so it was removed from the quotes. =)

Now once again, I will try to get back on the thread topic. The thread title was about observations of the forums. The Original Post was about "Enthusiasm being shared is fun". The bulk of the thread has been about proving that the enthusiasm is unfortunately not shared, but instead the enthusiasm is dividing the forum more than it is bringing it together.

Im with you Haley. Sariff Marek's comment was in direct response to your revealing you're a female and insinuated something going on in the restroom other than emptying the bowel or bladder. It had no place here and was in poor taste but is perhaps forgivable when considering how many of us nerds react to women gamers.

Actually, it had nothing to do with Haley.

I like Haley. She makes good points on here and she fascinates me in that she's blind and knows this game better than most of the rest of us.

Really shouldn't matter, but there you have it.

That she's a woman has never affected my interactions with her. Honestly, I don't think I realized she had made the comment that I replied to.

So, maybe don't assume I'm a sweaty palmed nerd that can't control himself around women. I do just fine around people in general.

Just ignore the sweaty palms.... >.>

I didn't take it that way. I even went back to reread everything to try to figure out how that impression came across and I couldn't really find it. So I am guessing that some mistake was made about who posted what and that's harmless enough that we can all get over it.

I derail enough threads on my own. I don't want whether I should have been offended or how I should have been offended to become an issue. I wasn't offended. Virtual hugs to everyone!

I don't want him to stop posting in general. Just to stop posting to derail the thread.

Not one of his posts has added to the conversation in any way. They just push us further off course. >.>

Actually, a few of the posts I have contributed to this thread have been quite on topic. =) I have actually tried multiple times to turn others' derailments (including your own) back onto the original topic. Only to have your next post be off topic, and typically aimed at attacking me, with a "no-tagbacks" clause added to the insults.

The method of stating "he is being rude and derailing things, the meanie", then stating "I told him to stop being a meanie", is an insult. I am not mean for defending against that insult. I am especially not rude when I have tried multiple times to get it back on topic. The method of discourse employed by you, is rude, whether you intended it to be or not. Additionally, it is not conducive to debate or discussion.

A few examples of quotes from my posts.

  • Onto the point you were trying to make, yes it is very fun to be surrounded by people that get excited by the same things you do.

  • I will remind you that the thread is about being excited to be surrounded by people that like the same stuff.

  • I agree it is fun to be surrounded by people that like similar things.

  • The thread title was about observations of the forums. The Original Post was about "Enthusiasm being shared is fun". The bulk of the thread has been about proving that the enthusiasm is unfortunately not shared, but instead the enthusiasm is dividing the forum more than it is bringing it together.

I apologize if you were offended by me pointing out that your original comment about bullying was inappropriate, but that 100% did not make my comment inaccurate, or deserve the anger you have thrust my way.

As someone that has been negatively affected by bullying in the past I wanted to point out something you may not have realized was offensive, and to educate you on why it was offensive. I tried to do this in a precisely worded comment that was without malice and without anger. Also, I purposely attempted to prevent the derailment of your thread with stating that was the only intent of the comment.

I understand this triggered something within you (and potentially within others in the forums) that caused you to go on the defensive about that comment being called out. I also understand that me commenting, on your additional comments, has also somehow been taken as an attack on you, when it was nothing of the sort. Since my first post, you have taken an adversarial path towards my comments, regardless of their content, which has turned, what could have been a "hey, I didn't mean my comment to be interpreted that way, I will be more careful in the future" teachable-type moment, into a thread that is fully derailed, with people straying far away from the intent of the thread.

I hope that in the future you take a simple comment about an accidental offense you caused, as "information" rather than taking it as an attack.

Pretty soon their will be more locked threads on this forum than unlocked ones... ;)

I can live with the reputation that I am some sort of superhero!

The real reason it seems that it fascinates you is because we don't really share a frame of reference. You rely on your sight so much and the only way I can do that is by relying on others. It's how my clothes match or my makeup is the right or how I get places i've never been...

It's far more a testament to human ability than to my own that we're able to adapt and figure stuff out. I'm far from unique or even special, in that regard. Whether it was evolved or designed into us, that's the fascinating part.

So, much as I'd love to keep all that fascination for myself, it's something we share. You just haven't realized your potential! ;)

If I was old enough, i'd drink to the hope you never have to. Actually, i don't like most of the alcohol i've tried and i'm not sure pina coladas are appropriate for a toast... so I hope iced tea will suffice and i'll drink to that hope, anyway.

I wasn't offended. It was just a lot like real life where I hear things i'm not supposed to. At least this time it wasn't because you thought my cane must mean i'm deaf. But i'm 17 so, by definition, self-conscious. I'm even more self-conscious because I can't see. I don't know when people are staring at my boobs and it's easy to think people always are... if I think about it at all. The conversation went pretty far into making me think about it. And then it got bizarrely worse. But I'll live. ;)

I've been involved in a 'male' hobby all my life. I've dated many of my players.

It's given me an insight into, and a tolerance for, the weird stuff that guys - especially gamer guys - do.

Sometimes they do step over the mark but mostly I'm happy that they treat me as an 'honorary guy' :)

Prost!

I'm on it.

I’m still out of positive votes for the day, so I guess this is another one that I literally can’t “like” enough.

Oh, hell. Let’s be honest here — even if I did have positive votes available, I still wouldn’t be able to “like” this one enough. ;)

I really have no experience with that. I've been to one gaming store only one time and it did not go well. But that was because the guys at the game I was observing had been in trouble at the store before. They got into an actual fight and were banned from the store but it was because they were idiots, not because my girl cooties infected them. :P

I hope.

You have cooties?!? Ewww! They're not infectious over the internet are they?

*prepares can of anti-cootie spray*

Um, yeah, it's a proven fact indeed girl cooties are transmittable via electronic devices, as well as human contact. That's why it's always a good idea to bar them from any boy hobby, club, or institution. Besides, they are icky as well. Eeewww. (Yes, for the record, I'm still like 10 or something. :) )

Some inspiration. Came across this a while ago and this tangent reminded me of it.

Hey. Haley, do you look like...?

Oh yeah.....

Jk lol

I've always imagined that haley looks a bit like her avatar (that whoever helped her choose it, recommended one that looks sort of like her)

Personally I have a goatee and light brown hair so I "sort of" look like my current avatar (the beared male jedi guardian in the force and destiny set of avatars) but don't have nearly as much hair on top as I used to. Way back in high school (early 1990's), people told me I looked a bit like Han Solo (for among other reasons, I did the slightly lopsided smile thing when I thought something was funny, and I had the thick full hair in a similar cut).

Black.

But only when the lights are off.

And it helps if you close your eyes.

To add to the image, I take Tae Kwon do classes!

It's only infectious if you read something I've posted.

Enjoy!
