Observations on the forums

By Serif Marak, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey I'm cool with being a nerd, and last year I married a sexy Peruvian woman who is a nurse (in Peru having an education is generally seen as desirable), so nerds can get the girl... yesterday I told my wife that it was pi day, she heard pie day and asked "so you want to eat pie today" yes because it's nerd traditional on pi day, you know march 14, a.k.a. 3.14 as is 3.141592653589.... so can you pick up a half pie for us from sprouts and get another pie to bring into work (she's a night nurse) for your coworkers. She answered, "they're going to think that I'm a nerd" and I said well you can tell them that you married a nerd and it was his/my idea. So she did, and she told her friend that it was "<pee>" day (because in Spanish the letter i has the english long e sound, the letter e has the english long a sound, a has the english short a sound) and then corrected herself "I mean pi, in Spanish we pronunce pi as <pee>" and her co workers all laughed and they liked the 2 pies that my wife brought in.

BTW March 14 is also Einstein's birthday.

Is it wrong that my reaction to pi day it 'STOP ROUNDING!'?

:)

no but if you like you can *start* eating pie at 1:59:26.53589... AM :D

Is it wrong that my reaction to pi day it 'STOP ROUNDING!'?

Except everywhere I know of, when they talk about “pi day”, they schedule appropriate roundish activities to occur at 1:59:26, local time.

So, while they are rounding, at least they’re carrying eight significant digits. ;)

A post on facebook was telling me that yesterday being 3/14/16 made it "Rounded Pi Day" if that helps you feel better. =)

Hmm, my observation of the forums has taught me if ideas and imagination aren't in line with the majority voice they're not welcome. Heck, I've reported my own posts for deletion because of it. Sad, really. All this talk of birds of a feather flocking is quaint, but untrue.

You might be asking "Then why come?"

I'll tell you why. Although I don't always agree with everything everyone says, there are a lot of great ideas here. Just not mine.

The point of this wasn't that we all speak the same language. It stemmed from a conversation about the relative technology level of Star Wars compared to now.

You seem to be having some trouble with the Forums environment. Let me give you some tips.;

If it comes to rules adjudication, there is 1 right answer. The book. But, that may not be the best answer for everyone, and so we have house rules. We're happy to provide feedback, but know that a lot of us can be harsher than necessary towards edits of our Bible.

If it's a matter of opinion and not facts, there is no right answer. However, taking someone else's critique of your position too seriously will only hurt you. You can bet they are sleeping pretty well at night, no matter how wrong they think you are. Understand that while we speak a similar language, it is all different dialects, and we're never all going to see eye to eye, except to say that Star Wars is awesome.

And finally, no one else cares about your opinion. No one here gives a rats furry butt cheek about mine, either. So, if you don't stick up for yourself, you really are on your own. Deleting your own posts because it sparked an argument is, frankly, pathetic. I love when I spark an argument, even if I am wrong. It means that I hit a nerve people care about deeply and I get to learn something pretty cool by the end of it. Usually.

Now, that last isn't an encouragement to troll like a certain someone already did on this thread. It's simply to say that even negative feedback shows that someone placed value in your words.

Now, pull up your pants, strap on your belt, and stop listening to Gloomy Sunday.

And finally, no one else cares about your opinion.

I am a nerd :)

"You gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away, an know when to run...."

People are their own worst enemies I find. Just recognize when a conversation is going no where and let it alone. I've gotten better, not perfect but better, at just saying enough, and leaving the piss threads in my rear view mirror. You can't do anything about what others think or type, but you are 100% in control of those choices for yourself.

And finally, no one else cares about your opinion.

Not true. I value all opinions. I just value each of them differently. Some more, some less. And I don't necessarily agree with all of them but I don't also think they shouldn't be espoused.

What I meant by this was that, if we were to never post it, no one would be bothered at the lack. No one is begging us to weigh in on something.

Wearing a (obscure) nerdy shirt is like having boobs, because people will constantly try to look at your chest without you noticing :D

And when an obscure nerdy shirt and boobs work together...

Omg...

a lot of completely natural bodily functions happen in the bathroom Haley, they're nothing to be embarrassed about (as long as no one other than your spouse doesn't see you doing them). My wife gets embarrassed when she's sitting on the toilet and I'm brushing my teeth, I don't get why, It's not like I haven't seen my wife naked.

Sadly that wasn't Pi day for the rest of the world, where the standard is DD/MM/YY

Excuse me, I need to use the bathroom for... awhile....

Oh, you mean "I'll be in my bunk" or perhaps 'excuse me while I go shoot wamp-rats in beggars canyon'.

And here I thought the SWRP-inspired David vs Goliath conversation was silly.

I don't care to know and, apparently, your wife wishes you agreed with me! TMI!

I'm not going to tell you how to be but I guess i'm more interested in how people feel and treating them accordingly than waiting until I understand why they feel as they do before adjusting my behavior. But, then again, I live in a world where the vast majority of subtle clues (aka body language) simply doesn't exist. As a result, I feel like I have to be more sensitive to the clues I am getting.

Indeed even if you do your calendar different, it was still pi day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi_Day "Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day date format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π" Being that the first official observance of it was in America, the rest of the world that decides they want to have fun with math or pie, follow our lead. Yes lots understand there are lots of places that do things different than America, but every once in a while, when something originates here, we really don't have to conform to everyone else, it is now their turn to conform to us.

Im with you Haley. Sariff Marek's comment was in direct response to your revealing you're a female and insinuated something going on in the restroom other than emptying the bowel or bladder. It had no place here and was in poor taste but is perhaps forgivable when considering how many of us nerds react to women gamers.

My apologies haley, I didn't mean to offend.

Much of Europe uses ISO 8601 format, so 2016-03-14. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601

I wasn't offended. It was just a lot like real life where I hear things i'm not supposed to. At least this time it wasn't because you thought my cane must mean i'm deaf. But i'm 17 so, by definition, self-conscious. I'm even more self-conscious because I can't see. I don't know when people are staring at my boobs and it's easy to think people always are... if I think about it at all. The conversation went pretty far into making me think about it. And then it got bizarrely worse. But I'll live. ;)

I really have no experience with that. I've been to one gaming store only one time and it did not go well. But that was because the guys at the game I was observing had been in trouble at the store before. They got into an actual fight and were banned from the store but it was because they were idiots, not because my girl cooties infected them. :P

I hope.

I like Haley. She makes good points on here and she fascinates me in that she's blind and knows this game better than most of the rest of us.

Really shouldn't matter, but there you have it.

That she's a woman has never affected my interactions with her. Honestly, I don't think I realized she had made the comment that I replied to.

So, maybe don't assume I'm a sweaty palmed nerd that can't control himself around women. I do just fine around people in general.

Just ignore the sweaty palms.... >.>

Edit: Just went back and saw that Haley wasn't even active on this thread until AFTER the bathroom comment.

So, not sure where this came from....

How does one (knowing the game better), have anything to do with the other (blindness)?
