Observations on the forums

By Serif Marak, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Occasionally I sit down and read through some threads to see the chain of events that leads from, for instance, communication ranges to discussions about technological evolution and where Star Wars should fit into that timeline to easily relay to the players the general level of technology.

It's these moments that I begin to understand why bullies picked on us....

We're huge friggin' nerds.

I love you guys. :')

I here you. I spent 25 years in the fire service. Nobody would have believed I was a gamer. Deep dark nerdie secret. It's a huge part of who I am but doesn't blend well in conventional society. Odd thing is, I kind of hid my conventional side from my nerd buddies too.

Some time I sm surprised we manage to understand each other :P

Hey, we all speak the same language: GAMING!!!!!!!!

Heh. Whenever a customer would ask about me when waitressing, I'd say, "I like to pretend to be someone else." They'd normally ask then whether I was an actress, to which my response was normally something like, "No. I'm a Jedi."

As apposed to, lets say, Fantasy Football leagues?

We are simply Nerds-of-a-feather.

The reason bullies pick on people is because they see it as a means to power and ego-inflation. Basically insecure in themselves,

<rant> This is not an appropriate comment anywhere. The reason bullies do anything should not be praised, or laughed at, bullying in all its forms should be punished. </rant> NOTE: This comment is not meant to send the thread down a path towards discussing bullying, but this comment needed to be made.

Onto the point you were trying to make, yes it is very fun to be surrounded by people that get excited by the same things you do.

It didn't REALLY need to be made.

Pretty sure we all know that.

But if you can't laugh at something, it will eventually destroy you. So, allow yourself a chuckle at those weak minded individuals that require the approval of their peers and understand that the role they play is to teach us how to deal with their stupidity in the real world.

Yep, you have to stop and consider when a fight is ... well worth fighting. If your doomed to lose no matter how capable/dedicated/skilled you are... smarter to move on.

Bullies fall in that line. They will always be there and there will always be those who provide sport.

The majority of my t-shirts are star wars themed and depending on the meeting I've worn one with jeans and jacket when giving presentations in front of several dozen people...I "out" myself frequently with reckless abandon as a nerd, and so far I that never backfired.

Wearing a (obscure) nerdy shirt is like having boobs, because people will constantly try to look at your chest without you noticing :D

It didn't REALLY need to be made.

Pretty sure we all know that.

As much as these are going out of their way to derail the thread by posting comments that are demanding responses, I will remind you that the thread is about being excited to be surrounded by people that like the same stuff.

The off-topic comments based on the bad joke, pretty much show why it should not have been typed/posted.

Lol, hello pot, my name's kettle.

Hello Kettle, meet

Wow did that ever go off on a wierd tangent. Guess nerds can be moody too. Laugh

Some time I sm surprised we manage to understand each other :P

Hey, we all speak the same language: GAMING!!!!!!!!

Yea, but sometimes it seems we speak highly different dialects...

As apposed to, lets say, Fantasy Football leagues?

When I called that "D&D for jocks" in a room full of hardcore league players, they got a little upset!

Final Fantasy Football would be a great way to convert the uneducated.

Well, the Obvious Troll was being obvious. Despite his multiple name changes on this forum, his true nature continues to shine through.

Makes you wonder why he finds the need to keep coming back here under different names.

Hey I'm cool with being a nerd, and last year I married a sexy Peruvian woman who is a nurse (in Peru having an education is generally seen as desirable), so nerds can get the girl... yesterday I told my wife that it was pi day, she heard pie day and asked "so you want to eat pie today" yes because it's nerd traditional on pi day, you know march 14, a.k.a. 3.14 as is 3.141592653589.... so can you pick up a half pie for us from sprouts and get another pie to bring into work (she's a night nurse) for your coworkers. She answered, "they're going to think that I'm a nerd" and I said well you can tell them that you married a nerd and it was his/my idea. So she did, and she told her friend that it was "<pee>" day (because in Spanish the letter i has the english long e sound, the letter e has the english long a sound, a has the english short a sound) and then corrected herself "I mean pi, in Spanish we pronunce pi as <pee>" and her co workers all laughed and they liked the 2 pies that my wife brought in.

BTW March 14 is also Einstein's birthday.

Edit: you're probably also thinking that nerds typically have a lower standard for "sexy" and if that's not the case wondering how a nerd got THE GIRL, regarding those topics look in the spoiler

well I can say that my wife is also a certified zumba (latin dance aerobics) instructor who is slender yet VERY_C_urvy (or maybe she's _D_urvy if you catch my meaning), she's also a little obsessed about fitness and wants to have 6 pack abs, but hasn't quite managed to get those yet and thinks she's "overweight" as long as she doesn't have 6 pack abs. She has a nice face but isn't a supermodel... I tell her that if she was any prettier I'd be insecure that maybe she might leave me for a better looking man. Some of the things working in my favor are (reason for her not to leave me):

I am a Caucasian (her preferred skin color) Christian man who loves God, can dance salsa and Bachata (she had friends who told her that right there was an impossible combination to find), doesn't drink alcohol or do drugs, has a PhD in mechanical engineering (the educated thing is very important to most Peruvians), work at a government lab where I am paid very well, and I provide for my mother financially (her mom always told her to "look at how a man treats his mother because that's how he will treat you"), and I'm her best friend (the Eharmony personality matching test really outdid itself when it matched us, I'll say a little be more about that later)

I also think her accent and skin tone are very sexy

so yeah... that's how the nerd got THE GIRL... Eharmony helped me find the woman who was my perfect match and for whom I was hers.

Note that I was on Eharmony 4 years before I met her, while she was on less than 2 weeks before she met me... oh and about the Eharmony personality matching test thingy it REALLY outdid itself with us... it's normally pretty good because to some degree I "clicked" with most (all but 1 I think) of the women that Eharmony matched me with over those 4 years but my wife was the first where... well our first phone call was on a Saturday night and immediately after I got of the phone my stress started building, and I'm a guy who normally just does NOT stress, so this was a completely foreign experience for me an I didn't know why i was stressing (and stressing bad)... I figured it out driving to work on the following Monday... I ___REALIZED___ that I was afraid of not having her in my life. Like I said, when Eharmony paired us it really outdid itself in the personality matching category. And from her perspective of the personality matching thing... I'm her best friend so it works both ways. So by way of word of mouth advertising... Eharmony might not be cheap or quick but if you're patient it will introduce you to Miss Right (or Mr. Right/ depending on your gender)

Is it wrong that my reaction to pi day it 'STOP ROUNDING!'?
