Quick questions

I'm still fairly new to the game and have two quick questions.

My first is, is it really ok to use Jury-rigged on grenades? To me it seems kind of a cheat but I'm just not sure.

My second question is about scathing tirade. In general, how would a character react after having a scathing tirade performed on them? In my opinion, since its such an effective tongue lashing that it actually causes strain damage, the character would be somewhat abashed or dumbfounded or something of the like. I was playing a game the other day and the PC who suffered the tirade said he got pissed off that he was insulted and pulled out his gun and attacked the guy. To me, the character shouldn't have been left in a mindset to react that way. I'm just wanting some other opinions.

For my money, the character should act in a manner consistent with their character. Was he playing a streetsmart cool pilot? An icy mercenary ex-soldier? Probably not going to be the kind to pull out his gun (in that situation)... A Wookie Marauder or a Trandoshan Bounty Hunter? I wouldn't put it past them at all... although something more 'visceral' might be in order...

But either way, here's the important thing to keep in mind (imho) - if they pass their strain threshold, then they are 'taken out' of the social combat. If they took a big Strain hit, it shows. Everyone knows that it hurt.

That can look like a lot of different things, but no matter what, it's apparent that they lost. They might even snap and kill the person who socially defeated them, but I would only allow it if it created more trouble for them. Get lambasted by the snotty royal toady in front of the king of planet X? Sure, pull your blaster out... bury your family dagger in his chest... in fact, make a Cool roll to stop yourself from doing it... Want to come back with some kind of witty repost? Good luck with that, and don't roll a Dispair...

And even in a situation where that kind of thing might be acceptable - In a Hutt's throne room, filled to gills with the scum of the sector, it needs to make things worse if they pull that kind of thing. Blow him away, and now the Hutt loses respect for you, because she knows that you can't keep your cool under stress... All the other ship captains think you're a loose cannon.

Don't forget that one of the virtues of this game is that roles get adjudicated by the table... with guidance/final approval by the GM. Get everyone involved, and come up with something that moves the story in an interesting way.

And lastly (again, imho), if you're playing with someone who can't deal with that kind of thing, you might want to re-think the contents of the chairs around you...

1. It's doable RAW although it's more of a narrative play Talent imo and something the PC does tinkering with an item at their workbench. In other words no Jury Rigging grenades on the fly in combat.

2. Setback dice would be good if you want.

Egads. I have no idea, but that's a devious idea. I might have to research that and/or steal it!

Was he strained out of the encounter? I've shouted down apprentice sith lords before, so him being out of the picture by being dumbfounded is totally appropreate.

Again, I think this needs to come back to game mechanics versus player agency.

You can tell them that the verbal abuse hurts, that it touches something deep inside them about their childhood, or whatever. You can tell them what their initial feelings are relative to this verbal attack, and then maybe give them setback dice depending on how they react.

But if they want to act in a certain way, they should be free to do so — with the added setback dice you give them. And if they turn around and respond with a physical attack to the verbal abuse, then the response of everyone around should probably be along the lines as described by Bishop69.
