Autoblaster Turrets - They CAN be fun!

So I played in a tourney this weekend running a heavily loaded Xizor with 3 Y-wings each with an autoblaster turret. The idea was to do something unexpected, but also to create a bubble of protection around Xizor.

I expected the Autoblaster Turrets to do well simply because people so rarely use them. I was thinking that people might try to get in close out of habit, (Because TLT Y-Wings are so common) and I'd take advantage of that.

I went 2W, 2L. Both of my losses were to TLT lists. TLT's can simply play keep-away and stay at range 3 with ease. But every other list I did very well. I went up against a small TIE Swarm with stealth devices and was HAPPY to unload with autoblaster turrets during our joust.

I know a lot of people have cited that the Ghost will be able to use both autoblaster turret AND Accuracy corrector, but there are some other possibilities too. First off, I think pilot skill and maneuverability are huge in this case. Moving first may get you a block and guarantee your action, but so many ships have boost/barrel roll, that you aren't likely to have a Soontir Fel fly right into your range 1.

Some ideas I am thinking of, outside of the ghost:

Kavil with veteran Instincts, Autoblaster Turret, and Engine Upgrade - This would be a fun one.

Miranda Doni with Autoblaster turret and Leebo (or Engine Upgrade and some other crew)

Alternatively a Dash Outrider with Autoblaster Cannon would be similar, but risky.

And add Jan Ors to rebels if trying any of these to add even more uncancellable hits! Fun fun fun!

hard to use the dang thing, though

a b-roll will take most ships out of range 1, so you really have to combo it with other things to make it stick (like, in the ghost's case, zeb crew or just its fat base)

not like bombs, where you can leave a range 1 threat behind you and then still threaten the area around your ship

I've had a lot of fun with this build, although it can be pretty unforgiving to fly. It's also quite difficult to reliably get into Range 1 and also be out of arc to make the most of it, but that's an entertaining piloting challenge. :)

Maybe I'll try out another Blasta build? This time I think Blasta Bee's maybe with FCS, maybe with AC...

Either way I'm sure people will hate it, like when I showed up with my Ion Bastard build.

I do love ABT's on Kavil with Engine Upgrade.

And Genius.

And Proton Bombs.

if you blaster dash you need "zeb" and Ion Projectors imo.

Indeed. Add in an Unhinged Astromech to let you make those sweeping Speed 3 turns.

I think Autoblaster Turrets are best in multiples - lay down several of them and it becomes a lot harder for a target to avoid all of them.

A quad-pack of Syndicate Thugs can change out their twin laser turrets for autoblaster turrets and engine upgrades. A much faster, more aggressive squad - the odds are low you'll get shots with more than one or two ships, but the good thing is that you don't need to.

Also i think its worth nothing Flying three Y wings in a "V" formation the two leading being ABT's and the one in back being a TLT can be a great thing, and if you see someone coming from behind do a 1 forward with the ABT's and a three with the TLT to switch formation status.

The Ghost w/ docked Phantom and ABT is going to be sick. Its a ship you cannot simple afford to be within range 1 of.

The Ghost w/ docked Phantom and ABT is going to be sick. Its a ship you cannot simple afford to be within range 1 of.

And that in itself is going to be useful as it will deter the enemy from closing to R1 to get an extra Red. Big ships melt quite quickly to massed attacks, if you can make R1 a no-go zone, the Ghost will last quite a bit longer than normal. Plus your opponent is not always going to manage to stay outside R1 while hounding you. He only needs to make a few wrong guesses of your dial for some of his ships to enter the danger zone.

People have theorycrafted it a lot around the forum.

It's a pretty interesting and unique ship as (in the EU) it's primary weapons were it's ion cannons, and it housed a (dorsal, lol) turret.

My personal preference would be for it to be the first ship in the game to be given ion cannons as a primary, and to have the Systems/Missile/Torpedo/Turret upgrade slots, but I've seen it suggested as a primary weapon turret ship with the cannon slot (which probably makes more sense now the Tractor Beam weapon has been revealed).

WTB Tractor turret

Runner-up in our abbreviated Store Championship yesterday used three Golds with Autoblaster Turret (one with R3-A2, two with R5 Astromechs) combined with three Bandits. Just a massive blob of 36 hit points flying everywhere that would be inconvenient for aces and then hitting them for unavoidable damage. It's disgusting.

He probably would have won the tourney if we'd gone the full day, but high winds killed power to the store during the first match and we had to call it after three rounds.

My original Thug Life (ran it at a Store Champ just days after Most wanted came out) was 5 Thugs with Autoblasters. While it put me in Top 8, the opponets quickly realized its still just a Y-Wing and outmaneuvered it to stay at R2+.

So I retooled with Kavil and 3 Thugs with unhinged mech. That woke the Y's up and even spent matches outflying Soontir and ABing him off the board. Tie swarm is still an issue and BroBots with HLC were able to take a Y down each turn.

So another iteration...4 Thugs+AB+Unhinged+Bomb/Seismics and now extra munitions (2 bombs per ship). It was glorious watching the Academy TIEs PS1 K-turn in behind your Ys, leaving you safe in the knowledge the higher PS TIEs (Howlrunner) will also do so. Drop 4 bombs in their midst and do your own K-Turn. Whatever survived the bombs got autoblasted the next round as you 3-moved back into R1 of the TIEs who also needed to clear stress. Took this list to Top 8 at regionals last year (then got pummeled by dual HLC Brobots who killed a Y each turn).

The new Thermal Detonator could now be a nasty surprise...though many players are becoming aware of bombs and the K-Turn jousting is dieing down quickly. The ability to deliver 3-4 extra damage plus 3-4 stress on a big ship would be delicious.

Though TLT Ys will always win out since their combined firepower usually kills a Y wing at range in 1 turn. Your likely to lose 2 Ys just getting into R1 and after the close encounter he will just 4 strait through you and TLT your last 2 ships down.

Like the TLT Y, the AB Y-Wing is a one trick pony and people have learned to deal with the trick. I still love my Ys and fly them today, but usually as support craft (in the TLT version) for something nasty...Boba Fett+Tactician+Clustermissile, IG-88B+HLC, the new Dengar should be nice.

Due to an "oops" by a FLGS, I got to fly against a Hera/Navigator/AC/Autoblaster Ghost yesterday.

The thing was insane. Can't predict where it is going; can't defend against its range 1 bubble of death -- and since it's a large base, it covers ground well to close to Range 1.

Some ideas I am thinking of, outside of the ghost:

Your Kavil build is fun to fly indeed! A bit heavy on points, but FUN!

Please no. While Autoblaster Turret is perfectly viable, Autoblaster (the cannon) is almost universally a hideous waste of points. It is one of the few cards on the flat do-not-use list, keeping good company with Expose.

Yikes. That'll ruin your opponent's day if they're not flying well or paying attention.
