The Haunting Casebook - V1.0

By OldManWhateley, in Fan Creations

I wanted to open this thread for download links to the new casebook for easy access, since a person cannot edit his own posts. Here is the download link from megauploads:

www.megaupload.com/

The file is zipped and have two folders: one has all the casebook files in .eons format while the second folder has all the files in .jpgs or pdf's. I sincerely hope that people find this casebook enjoyable. I warn you that it is a very difficult casebook and could prove to be quite deadly! Please post any comments, suggestions, mistakes that need to be corrected, and/or criticisms here so that I can use them in fixing problems as well as getting better at other case book writing.

With this casebook completed (unless there are mistakes to be fixed), I am starting out on writing another case book right away. I am torn between having the next case book being a sequel to Whisper in the Dark or a case book idea I have using the Dunwich Horror expansion. The only problem with a Dunwich case book is that people might not have the expansion so the case book would be useless to them. Any feed back would be appreciated.

Thank you very much, OldManWhateley .

Looking forward to trying it out and curious to see how you integrated stuff from Haunted House.... can't find that gold plated download though! heh heh

Update:

Downloaded and had a quick read thru. Nice work. Will you be uploading to BGG?

Yes, sorry about the loack of art and stuff in the pdf - I am having trouble with my Word program right now so all I could do is export the .eons file to html and then covert it to pdf sad.gif

Glad you like what you see so far! By the way, what is BGG? (I am probably being stupid at the moment in my ignorance)

happy.gif Looks very promising! Thanks a lot!

@ OMW

BGG is www.boardgamegeek.com/

The ultimate in geek and everything cardboard...um, and plastic...er, and possibly some type of metal.

Get those casebooks out there fella!

Got the few things I have actually finished up there (I've posted them all on FFG too), and my Zombie Apocalypse scenario and Haunted House expansion have both been (or being in the case of HH) translated into French (and spanish too I believe) by some of the BGG site members. I think most of the FFG stalwarts can be found there too.

Since there's renewed interest in "Arkham Investigations" casebooks, I thought I would revamp the site:

http://arkhaminvestigations.barkingdoginteractive.com

I've added "The Haunting" and "Dark Dreams of Dagon" to it. (Are those "megadownload" links going to be the canonical download locations?)

It's not really all that different from the old site, except it will be easier for me to add content, and people can leave comments about the casebooks on the site.

I *was* going to bite the bullet and buy a domain name for it, but there's a dirty cybersquatter sitting on "arkhaminvestigations.com". I thought briefly about sending a few Byakhee his way, but decided to just go with a subdomain.

Wow! I love your site! I hope you are right about the renewed interest in Arkham Investiations - maybe someone will be inspired and write a casebook of their own so that I can play it! Is that website new? I have never seen it before - I am aware of the other site at http://homepage.mac.com/nephilim/arkham_investigations/rules.html but not this one.

I will continue to use megaupload for links for now until I can figure out something else. I forgot about board games geeks - I will have to upload the files there also.

Yeah, this one is new and under development. Started it a few days ago. The idea is to have it replace the old site so that it becomes easier to maintain and allows people to comment on the casebooks. Glad you like it.

@Neph:

Nice to see you around.

@OldManWhateley:

The mark-up in SE provides an <image> tag that lets you add images directly.

To get a PDF of your case book, there is no need to export to HTML first. Printing directly from SE to a PDF file (using a PDF printer driver) will produce nicer results. To save ink you might want to turn off the default background image used for case books. To do that, go to the Publish tab, choose Edit Style Properties..., then scroll down to the two BackImage entries. Double click to edit the values, and the default (res://casebook/background.jp2).

The easiest and most portable way to include images in a case book is to use a Project. Here are some step-by-step instructions to get you started:

1. Download and install SE 2.1 alpha 4.
2. Download and install the patch file to update to alpha 5 (currently only out for Windows).
3. Start the updated version of SE.
4. Choose File|New Project. Create a blank project:
a) Press OK to close the warning that the feature is under development.
b) Fill in a name such as The Haunting for step 1.
c) The resource ID won't matter in this case, enter something for step 2 or leave it alone.
d) Choose a folder where you want to create the project, such as your home directory, for step 3.
e) Choose Make Project.
5. Add a new task for the case book:
a) Choose Add New Task...
b) Enter a name for the task, such as Case Book.
c) Choose the Case Book task type.
d) Choose Add Task.
6. In the project pane, you will find the new task folder with a case book inside. Open the case book by double-clicking.
7. Click on the Preview Draft tab. The text of the sample case shows you how the image link was created. You can copy image files from folders on your computer and paste them directly into the task folder (or the sample images folder that the task sets up), then include them in the case book using <image> tags.

Keep up the good work,
Chris

Ahh, very good, Chris. Thank you very much for the advise! Isee now how to crreate the pdf's without the html version first! As far as adding graphics, I am downloading the version you spoke of and will mess around with it.

Well, barring any mistakes or goffs in the Haunting, I hope at the very least someone plays it and can post some comments about game play. Other than that, I believe this casebook is complete for now, and its time to begin on another forbidden tome and arcane lore. It is getting easier to write the casebooks, so I hope that the next two I have drafts on will be as quick to write as this one.

Be happy to post a session report, but my gaming companions are short of free time at the mo, and the police started to ask questions when I tried to coerce people in off the street at knife point with the promise of adventure and madness in the attic! gran_risa.gif

I vote for the Dunwich expansion casebook, for what it's worth. I think all the casebooks available so far are usable with only the base game, right? It would be cool to have one that incorporated an expansion. I still want to write one based on, "The Lurking Fear," but haven't had a lot of time recently, and my group has been playing other games... I hope we'll get rekindled soon though. happy.gif

Thanks for the casebook, you rock!

I agree for Dunwuch, as there isn;t any case books using the expansions, so I am leaning towards a case book based on the story, The Dunwich Horror. Thanks for the praise - I am happy to see people interesting in them and willing to try them out!
