Barrel roll backwards?

By Sgt Engee, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So my friend and I were playing a game of x-wing yesterday and he decided to barrel roll his tie fighter and place it on the opposite end and behind where he was. Rules as written I don't see how you cannot do this, but from thematic / flying perspective, it seems wrong as it's moving the ship backwards instead of forward.

When you take into account that you've just moved the ship forwards as well, it makes more sense. You barrel roll and slow down at the same time. On the reverse of that, you can barrel roll and move further forward also.

As long as the template doesn't extend beyond the edge of the base (at either end) you can BR as forward or as backwards as you want. It's often a viable tactic to give you a shot but moving you out of your opponent's arc.

Wait till you see Dash doing his barrel roll sheanigans :D

No where in the rules does it say to apply anything that appears to be atmospheric/thematic rules, so it's the case of do what the game says to do, not what it doesn't.

You will see this a lot with the upcoming Tractor Beam. Barrel Rolling opponents onto obstacles so that they suffer the effects 2 turns in a row will be possible.

Outside of losing their opportunity to attack, unless there is a rules update that changes something they'll only suffer the effects to get off the obstacle (and only then if their template overlaps).

Obstacle effects currently require a maneuver to trigger. The Tractor Token rules card clearly states that the forced movement is not a maneuver.

From a simple question, simply answered, to one of the things we're currently arguing about by post 6-7. Is that a record?

Are you surprised that it took that long?

I'm not. :D

The OP didn't even contain a question. Not sure if this makes it better or worse :)

Keep in mind the difference between a barrel roll vs aileron roll. BR will save your life while AR just look cool at airshows.

Barrel Rolls:

Cool video:

In the atmosphere, by varying the throttle with a stiff enough head wind, the roll could be completed very close to the original starting point. I think that is what they are trying to simulate in this game. If you are chasing me and we both do a forward maneuver, same speed, and then I barrel roll, I should be behind you. My ship took a longer flight path and lost momentum during the maneuver. Ideally, I "hit the brakes and let them fly right by"

The second sentence in the rules section posted gives the answer. As mentioned above as well, the rules say to make sure no part of the base extends past the front or back of the template. Clearly you can move forward or backwards with your BR.

From a physics standpoint, it makes just as little sense for the ship to go extra-far forward as it does to go less-far forward. Velocity vector addition doesn't work like that.

"From a physics standpoint..." in a game involving spaceships that can travel faster than the speed of light.

Mate, physics took a back seat in Star Wars a long time ago. Probably best that we don't try to work physics into the rule set.

(Okay. Fair point.)

Don't visualize as going 1 straight, stopping, Barrel Rolling, visualize the entire maneuver and action as a single thing.

I wish I could animate, battle reports would be awesome if it would be one fluid animation.

The new FAQ states that the ship suffer the effects of any obstacle it overlaps.

Quoted for Truth...

People are going to HATE Defenders and take debris instead of asteroids. Defender players will take the largest asteroids so that they have the chance of getting damage on the TB shot.

And Ruthlessness.

The only current 'effects' of being on an asteroid during the combat phase, without a maneuver, is a lack of being able to fire. The FAQ is clear as mud on this point.

Would you suggest that Airen Cracken doesn't let a friendly ship Daredevil onto an asteroid?
