While to some extent your description of an interceptor does make sense, A-Wings had important uses elsewhere.
A-Wings were also very useful in raids. Hit and run. They'd zip in past defenders and destroy convoys or specific targets with their concussion missiles before using their speed to disengage quickly.
They could also hold their own in close quartered dogfights as they were very agile, small targets, and also carried rotating blasters which could hit enemy fighters from unusual angles including in some variants directly behind them.
And my issue still stands that even by your reasoning their sole use in a game in which nearly every ship can be upgraded to suit a number of roles, is to fly in front of other ships.
And for somebody such as myself for whom the A-Wing is their favorite ship, am I not justified in being unhappy with such a limited and boring place in the game?
I love the A-Wing too but man, 2 dice and 1 (expensive!) missile for 20+ points blows. 2 dice regularly fails to damage 2 evade ships, and frankly this is not what an interceptor should be like. Thanks to its agility it should be able to gun down TIEs with relative ease. Juke is a step in the right direction which started with Prockets, but aside from Jake Farrell A-Wing results are disappointing. They're pretty good at staying alive, but consider that for an extra 12 points you could either get a Z-95 or a Blackmoon Squadron pilot. Arvel Crynyd fits thematically with the "rotating lasers" but his ability comes at a significant opportunity cost, and A-Wings live or die by actions.
The TIE Advanced meanwhile costs 1 point more if you choose to include missiles in the costing, has an extra hull for a somewhat worse dial and barrel roll vs. boost. Then, you can get a Sensor Jammer or Advanced Sensors for free, or a serious firepower upgrade for 1 point more. Whilst the A-Wing can combo awesome EPTs, this doesn't affect the fact that it has to pay for them. So no surprise that the Prototype Pilots are showing up in lists. Sadly, the A-Wing fixes were simply too limp-wristed to do any good, just like the Rebel Transport X-Wing "fixes." Why pay 35 points when I can get Corran Horn?
EDIT: quoting system, what a PITA
