Then don't go.
Life often presents conflicting priorities.
Don't have a choice, that's the point. Many of us have families. This isn't gonna fly for any of them.

Holding an event on Mother's Day is awfully silly though.
Oh crap that's the ffg one. So, you're doing what I'm doing. Go all in for mom the week before. My mom is a basketball fan so this basically means I'm getting floor seats the weekend before AND taking her to a nice dinner.
We can overcome, human relationships don't have to come before spaceships.
Two days? Is this the start of FFG starting to host sane tournaments?
(Mother's day, eh? Clearly trying to cater to the younger market
)

This works well until your married with 3 kids (or any number of them) at home. My advice it's not worth skipping Mother's Day for in a marriage, kind of like if your wife took off for the weekend on Father's Day leaving the kids with you. Tough draw and I feel for you.
Yea, not happening here. My wife is half Irish and half Puerto Rican. I'm not even gonna bring this up like it's possible, lol.

Skip it, Mother's Day is almost worse than Xmas in terms of overcommericalization (to the extent that its originator reviled it in later years).
That and it privileges breeders over the childless, which isn't cool...

My mum raised us kids up to be super sensible , and that means not going out on Mother's Day to crowded restaurants with bad service and overworked waitstaff.

It is only a two day event for those in the cut. You can still play for the fun/experience/atmosphere/card/top 16 prize if it's a top 8 cut. And if you do have to bow out of the top 8, then so be it. It's far from a guarantee.
BTW, the store championship at this location was one of the best, most efficient tournaments I've seen run ( including Gen con and world's). We had a comparable number of players (about 10-12 fewer) and only one less round than the tournament the week before that spawned an 11 page plus thread, and we finished about FIVE hours earlier.I think they are even considering trying to make it one day if they can start early (like round 1 at 9 am early) and keep a tight schedule.

If it were for anything else than toy soldiers, I could negotiate.
One of my local stores ran their SC on Mother's Day (happens early in the UK) and a winter kit valentine's. Gits.
Is this really a such a big thing over there? I don't think I've ever seen that day taken seriously by anyone here in Ireland for anyone with kids over the age of 4 in a couple of decades. If my mother or other half knew there was a thing I wanted to go to on Mother's Day, they'd be more annoyed if I'd stayed to do something like an arbitrary dinner/lunch/visit/card.
(This is the same store that just had the crazy flap over "loaded" dice where regulars took it upon themselves to go through a player's stuff without asking him, amirite?)

Sure is. Were any of the out of towners married with kids ? It's pretty dumb choice of a date.

Cut the crap.
FFG chose the date, not the shop.
Do you think there's some evil mastermind in some dark room cackling or something? Jesus

I'll have you know my evil lair is well lit, the orphans get a good work out on the treadmill and the guards get cardio from plenty of whip cracking.
Granted, I'm not married, but I'm definitely a nerd and all holidays are definitely negotiable with the girlfriend.
For Valentine's Day, she hung out with a bunch of her lady friends and I went with 3 other dudes to the Huntsville Alabama Store championship, which one of us won. It was rad, and there were no ill side effects because communication and compromise are healthy parts of a relationship.

The air quality is somewhat suspect, however. I blame that cruciferous vegatable diet.

Let's play with our plastic ships! pew pew pew....

Oh you poor fool she's just filed it away to use against you at a future date, you have much to learn young one.
