Last night I had an odd game. I was flying Poe, Kyle, and Biggs, my friend had Whisper, Omega Leader, and Maarek Steele.
First round of combat, my friend barely put Whisper on a rock, his other two ships did 0 damage to Biggs. I dropped a shield off Whisper, and 2 damage to OL. Nice start.
Second round of combat, Biggs lost his shields and blew IA. Poe did nothing to uncloaked Whisper and got his shields blown off. Kyle wounded OL once more, and Biggs did nothing to (still) uncloaked Whisper. Bad turn.
Third round of combat, OL took an unmodified shot at Biggs, perfect hits, 0 evades, dead. Steele takes an unmodified shot at Poe, perfect hits, 0 evades, dead. Kyle kills OL but I call game anyway. Kyle can't take Whisper and Maarek Steele at once, and it was getting late.
Now I'll say I didn't deploy correctly. I set Kyle and Biggs in the corner facing my opponent, as if to joust. I should've deployed sideways to slow play and build tokens. I also set Poe in the mid-table and went through great pains to make sure he was in range 3 of Biggs. Only after I started flipping dials on the first turn, did I realize I really meant to set Poe in range 3 of Kyle and had to boost closer to set up for next turn, so I was immediately out of position. Mistakes were made.
But I swear to God, every time I bring Poe, he gets his shields blown off in one round! I'm sure it doesn't actually happen in every game but I can recall numerous occasions where it has.
It's weird because everyone refers to Poe as this unkillable, super reliable, eye-roll-inducing, regenning, rebel ace. For me he is just a guy that dies very quickly, no matter how I build or use him. This whole list concept is designed to get Poe to the endgame. Biggs tanks early, Kyle has to be removed next to stop the focus factory, and then whatever is left has to deal with PS 10 Poe sitting on an evade token. He can clean up.
I've seen the power at range 3, but at any other range he always takes more than he gives in my experience.
I'm not naive enough to believe that I'm right and the rest of the internet is wrong, nor do I want to turn this into a dice-blaming pitty party. I fully recognize that I'm "doing it wrong" but my inability to get the value out of a ship I know is powerful, is both mind-boggling and frustrating.
I'll keep trying to crack the code, but boy it's a rough road.
I have the same issues with Aggressors. They're too fast when I want to go slow, and too slow when I want to fast. It usually looks like I'm playing PAC Man with asteroids when I try to fly one.
Anyone else have this issue with any ships or pilots?
