Puzzled about Gunner/Luke crew card

By rcrlu, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Sorry if this has been addressed already. But I would like to know about what can activate the Gunner/Luke crew card ability:

"If an attack does not hit"

A hit is defined as any remaining hit/crit result not cancelled by an evade result/evade token. Now when it comes to rolling blanks, common sense tells me that it also means "no hit". But on

page 10 of the rule book, it defines what a blank is:

*Blank: This result does not display icons. It has no effect.

So how can rolling all blank attack dice activate Gunner/Luke crew card? In other words, how can rolling ''nothing'' mean an attack that does not hit? I've been getting different inputs about this.

One side says you can't roll blanks to activate it, others say that rolling blanks also means "no hit''. I would like some clarification on these particular cards. Thank you.

Defining if an attack hits or not comes in the compare results step:

6. Compare Results: [...] If at least one [boom] or [kaboom] result remains uncanceled, the defender is hit by the attack; otherwise, the attack misses

If you roll all blanks there are no uncanceled [boom] or [kaboom], therefore the attack misses (does not hit)

Another interesting related item in the FAQ: if you a have Blinded Pilot crit, Luke/Gunner would activate. It is considered an attack with no dice, therefore you miss and they trigger.

From the FAQ:

A ship with Blinded Pilot assigned to it may still use abilities that trigger after performing an attack, such as Darth Vader, Gunner, and Luke Skywalker, even though no attack dice are rolled.

Even if you roll all blanks on your attack, the rest of the steps of the attack still happen. The defender is still supposed to roll defense dice (even though a lot of people don't).

An attack is a hit if there are [HIT] or [CRIT] results left after the defender cancels results. Anything other than that counts as not hitting.

That's the original Blinded Pilot. The Blinder Pilot that comes in the TFA damage deck works differently.

Thanks for the clarification! I should have checked that before adding it to the comment

I hope the blinded/ blinder pilot clarification was intentional because that's how I will refer to it from here on out.
