Special Modifications Species!

Still crossing my fingers for a Devaronian in the bounty hunter book...

Devaronian is in Nexus of Power for Force and Destiny.

No Jawas is ridiculous.

And something I don't get to say often when it comes to star wars: I know absolutely nothing about mustafarians, didn't even know they existed...so my interest in them is rather low. Dugs are interesting, but Besalisk invoke no emotion from me.

I'd just wish they make a species book/notebook/booklet at some point. Having to go through every single book in the collection to make a character is rather ridiculous. Same can be said about equipment or weapons, but the weapons and equip at least have a thematic connection.

That’s not going to happen any time soon, at least not from FFG. They’ve got too much other work to do, and there’s no sense for them to put together a “complete index” of all the species that ends up getting invalidated when the next book gets published.

Maybe once all the various books have been published and they feel like they’re mostly done with the franchise, then they’ll be able to put out a complete index of this sort.

In the meanwhile, the best you’re likely to be able to get is fan-created resources, such as the Viluppo Index at http://swrpg.viluppo.net/

Yeah, sadly thats the point. FFG. Don't get me wrong, love the company for its support (what other company at that size lets you contact the game designers with questions directly?) but their release model is annoying. I honestly think, that if they put all x-wing upgrade cards each wave into card decks and sold them separatly (wave 3 upgrade card deck for example) they would've curbstomped the competition way sooner and would've gotten more players that stick with the hobby.

I already know several players that started x-wing with the new core set after ep.7 and have sold their stuff by now because they are unwilling to spend hundreds of euros for ships that are unplayable in the meta (in their opinion, not mine) or they will never play (epic ships) just to get the upgrade cards they need for the tournaments. (almost nobody in the wargaming hobby around here buys used stuff.)

sorry, didn't want to derail the thread, but after a few years this gets annoying :(

BTT: I know there are several amazing ressources generated by players on here as well as on other places in the web. Viluppos index is an amazing pice of work. If this were an official app and updated with each release I would buy it in a heartbeat...don't know how much ffg would have to charge for the app or per release update so that it doesn't eliminate their book sell, and yes I know, they don't have the license for pdfs or the like, but damnit a nerd can dream!

If you want to help defray operating costs for the index, there is a Patreon, set up at https://www.patreon.com/viluppo?ty=c

Oh, and if you’re a paid supporter, you get invited to the private Slack channel that was set up. ;)

Yeah, the "mix it all up so that they have to buy 5+ things to get the 1 thing they actually want" model kept me from ever getting into CCGs or CMGs... and it's certainly a discouragement from getting into an RPG product too when the same model is used for the books.

Ack. Don't remind me.

Again, I'm crossing my fingers for a Devaronian (in the far more appropriate) bounty hunter book.

I don't purchase F&D books.

If you like the species, Devaron is also going to be detailed in the book.

Hmm I have just created a bounty hunter/gadgetter for a game that is x months in the future.

Would have liked to make her Dug or Bessalisk but GM won't use fan stuff. Here's hoping book out before campaign starts so I can rewrite.

Plead your case and ask them to let you change it once the book hits?

May just stretch the F&D Chronicles of the gatekeeper I am currently running :P

They provided more info on Devaronian's in Nexus of Power than they would have for the Bounty Hunter book. How is that a bad thing? Just because it says Force and Destiny?

I hope they re-print the armor rules. I'd like to have all the constructable items available to me in one place.

I'm betting the converting encumbrance to hardpoints for ships won't be in this book... It will be in the Age of Rebellion book.

spoiler

I've got a metric crap ton of WotC Star Wars Minis and I've never played a single minis game, nor have I bought a sealed box of star wars minis... I solely use them for the Star Wars RPG back in the day I used to buy "complete commons" and "complete uncommons" sets on Ebay, along with individuals that I wanted. Now with each new campaign I start (or play in) I buy about $100 worth of WotC star miniatures from trollandtoad.com, I get minis that look like the characters... the most I've ever paid for a single mini was I think 16 or so dollars for a Mira (it's the mini that a PC is using for the Andra character, a scoundrel fixer working for Grondo the Hutt, he used OggDude's character generator and the Mira mini looked spot on like the image he chose). I considered buying a Cad Bane for $35

BTW the artwork for the Marshall spec in Far Horizons and the Star Wars WotC Cad Bane mini were the inspiration for one of my PCs characters, a bunch of my players were first time gamers so I pitched some suggestions to them... the suggestion based on the mini and spec was a duros marshall sharpshooter... and that evolved into Thadius (THAD) Bane who comes from a long line of honorable goody two shoes Duros lawmen, his infamous uncle Cad Bane is the black sheep of the family and got a bounty on him due to collatoral damage (accidentally killing innocent bystanders) when in pursuit of a dead or alive bounty. When Thad's father tried to bring in his brother (Thad's uncle) Cad, there was a high noon style show down shoot out, Thad's father was faster but missed and his brother Cad shot him dead. Now Thad has hung up his badge and become a bounty hunter, he is determined to bring his uncle Cad in to face justice, if Cad comes quietly Thad will bring him in alive, but not so secretly Thad is hoping that his uncle will resist arrest so that he will be legally/morally justified in shooting him dead. Cad is actually pretty proud that his nephew Thad has become bounty hunter with a growing reputation for being a lightning fast gunslinger, and from a distance/over a comlink has helped Thad out on a few occasions. Thad's reputation as Cad's nephew and the fact that he's instantly recognizable by reputation (as the lightning fast quick draw duros bounty hunter who wears a kamperdine armored tailored jacket and carries a then equalizer now nova viper) frequently acts as a "circle of protection vs. significant galactic underworld players." Black sun doesn't care who's nephew he is, but almost anyone else who's made the galactic underworld who's who's list goes out of their way to avoid killing Thad because they don't want his uncle hunting them down (and Cad has killed people who took pot shots at Thad).

You know that falleen gambler artwork in fly casual... I statted her as a gunslinger and she took a contract from Czerka to bring in Thad's best friend and business partner Tal Lee (actually Tal Seario) just so she would get a chance to outdraw and kill Thad which would draw out Cad for revenge so that she could kill Cad in a shoot out and establish herself as a first tier bounty hunter (first tier are sentients like Jango Fett, Boba Fett, Cad Bane, maybe bossk; second tier are most of the rest on the BH that vader tasked with capturing han, chewie, leia etc in Empire; third tier are people like Thad Bane and the rest of my PCs, and the falleen gunslinger), Well she out drew Thad (thanks to 2 ranks of rapid reaction) and shot first but didn't take thad down with the shot and then he shot her putting her down (0 wounds left but not unconscious or dead) and he walks over and says to her....

well here's how I scripted that show down and it happened to play out exactly like I scripted it

Kynxa:

As for Thad Bane, I just want you dead. You don’t deserve your reputation as a badass quick draw gunslinger; it just got handed to you on a silver platter because you’re Cad Bane’s nephew. Well it’s time I got famous, and unlike you I’m going to earn my reputation by burning you at high noon and then also outdrawing your uncle when he comes to avenge your death. I’m fast enough to do it. Of course, if you’re scared you can go peacefully but to be honest either way you’re going to get fitted for a pine box. If I were you, I’d choose to go out in a blaze of glory, after all there’s a slim chance that you could outdraw me and save your friends. So you’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk?

Quickdraw showdown between Thad and Kynxa (cue the good the bad and the ugly theme music) Kynxa will probably outdraw Thad and hit him but not put him down, then Thad’ll shoot her and drop her… says something cool like

Thad:

There’s something I learned when my father died drawing down on my uncle, shooting first is good but shooting last is better. When you’ve only got time for one shot, you need to make it count. As a gunslinger, fast isn’t useful unless you’re also deadly accurate.

the player was happy that I had that bit of dialog ready for him (I suggested it, he liked it and read it) and the rest of the group was like ooooh dissss

After the free for all combat was resolved (while the medical emergency is being dealt with) Cad Bane talks to Thad over a comlink, tells him that:

Cad Bane:

Thad, Czerka was really just interested in Tal, and the rest of this is for show. Oh there was a potential mining contract and ore sales on the table, but that wasn’t what motivated Czerka to send serious muscle all the way out here on such short notice. Just thought that you should know. I’m proud of how you handled yourself today Thad, I’m not always going to be around to protect you. I was this time because I heard about the live bounty contract that Czerka put out Tal. I figured it’d be Kynxa who took it. There are very few hunters out there who have both the talent to be a serious threat to you and are foolish enough to go after my nephew. Oh and Kynxa, you WEREN’T fast enough to outdraw me. (Head shot kills Kynxa.) Sorry about the mess Thad, but I had to reinforce the message that death is the price of shooting or otherwise trying to kill my blood.

so yeah that storyline was inspired by the marshal spec artwork and the WotC Cad Bane miniature... good stuff can come from collectable miniatures.... I might still buy the $35 Cad Bane mini for Thad's final show down with his uncle but that's a while off yet... it's his obligation/side story and I'm not in a hurry to resolve it because it's such good drama

Maybe ask the GM if you can use the fan one until the official one comes out?

I finally found a source stating that Mustafarians are an insectoid species, which disproves their much speculated relationship with the mammalian Kubaz species.

I'm intrigued what was the speculation?

No Jawa ?????

WTF...

THEY **** WELL BETTER BE IN A TATOOINE SOURCEBOOK  IF WE DON'T GET AN OFFICIAL JAWA RELEASE I'M GOING BACK TO COMPLICATEDCOMBAT D20!!!

(TBH we can just use WEGs Tatooine stuff)

You raise here the better question. Where is the tatooine sourcebook? Because Javas belong there anyway and rightfully and this should have been out a long time ago.

Not sure whether we will see a Tatooine book but if we do might I suggest that this is also where we would see the Gamorean rear its horrific head?

Sorry, had to chime in. With the amazing size and scope of the star wars universe, and the comparitively limit "official" stuff, why would any GM disallow fan based info?

Some GM's are uncomfortable playing with none official stuff.

I myself am not to fond of it either, though if argued reasonably I would allow it...

It was. On pretty much every other SW RPG.

I'd honestly prefer to see something new than the same old things we've seen time and again in every incarnation of the RPG.

Some GMs are not comfortable assessing the balance of fan-made material and would rather rely on FFG to vet options in relation to each other. Others have had bad experiences in the past with overpowered or otherwise exploitable homebrew material throwing their game off the rails and as such are skeptical of any material that comes from outside a book (and some are skeptical of anything outside a core rulebook on top of that).
