I've recently become enamoured with the A-Wing + X-Wing + E-Wing template for rebel squads, particularly Corran Horn with R2-D2. Coming straight out of playing Vader/Fel/Palp for a while I have to lament that running Rebels is VASTLY different from running Imperials. This isn't a tutorial on how to run Rebels as an Imperial player, I just wanted to make that clear before I post the list.
First I'd like to point out that I would really like to run Tycho in the A, Poe in the X, and Corran in the E, but sadly I can't fit that many aces into this list and still have enough room for the upgrades I need. I've bounced around casually with different permutations of these three aces quite a bit, and I feel like I still haven't gotten which one is the best. Second, I'll say that I'm only willing to stick to these three ships. This permutation has been what I am most comfortable flying with, and will remain such as long as I play Rebels.
I'll begin by posting the first list I came up with so that I can tell you what was wrong with it.
AXE Crack - 100 Points
Green Squadron Pilot - A-Wing (19 + 2)
Push the Limit (3)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Crack Shot (1)
Poe Dameron - T-70 X-Wing (31 + 6)
Veteran Instincts (1)
R5-P9 (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Corran Horn - E-Wing (35 + 7)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire Control System (2)
R2-D2 (4)
This list puts a much heftier investment in the A-Wing than other non-Tycho lists. Of these three ships, the A-Wing is the most capable of benefiting from PTL by far as it has 8 green manoeuvres as opposed to just 5 like Poe and Corran. However, the investment of 21 points into a ship meant to be nothing more than a patsy is not a good idea, as we're missing out on an Engine Upgrade for Corran. This brings me to my second list:
The Headsman's AXE - 100 Points
Prototype Pilot - A-Wing (17)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Autothrusters (2)
Poe Dameron - T-70 X-Wing (31 + 6)
Veteran Instincts (1)
R5-P9 (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Corran Horn - E-Wing (35 + 11)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire Control System (2)
R2-D2 (4)
Engine Upgrade (4)
I'm feeling much better about this list than I am others. Lack of a boost action makes turtling up with Corran tough, as escaping from combat is hard when he's limited to 3-straight and 2-bank manoeuvres to regen his shields. Giving him boost allows him to turn around more effectively helping him turn around in 2 activations rather than 4. When we start to run we need to be able to loop back around quicker to get back into combat provided the enemy doesn't give chase.
A very odd brew with the list consists of the new EPT called Rage being equipped to Tycho. With this, he essentially has a target lock, focus, and whatever other action he wants to perform with Push the Limit. Since Rage doesn't say "perform a focus action" or "acquire a target lock", Tycho can still do either of these things if he wants, although boost and evade are both fine choices. The struggle here is this: Do I run Poe or Corran alongside Tycho?
Psycho Tycho's AXE - 100 Points
Tycho Celchu - A-Wing (26 + 4)
Push the Limit (3)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Rage (1)
Poe Dameron - T-70 X-Wing (31 + 6)
Veteran Instincts (1)
R5-P9 (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Blackmoon Squadron Pilot - E-Wing (29 + 4)
R2-D2 (4)
When playing against newer players, Corran is often the target of most of their attacks understandably so. Corran is an excellent jouster, as his double tap ability lets him shoot twice, keep going, turtle up, then circle back around to double tap once more. An opponent that can focus fire on Corran can get him off the board very quickly as he only comes with five health, even with regen. And knowing that, I came up with this list. Tycho gets pretty much three actions a turn, putting him (almost) on par with Soontir Fel for action economy. However, a lack of barrel roll action severely limits his arc dodging ability, but with the evade and focus backup happening each turn can help with defending against attacks.
Poe is, unfortunately, the best pilot for the T-70. I'm usually unwilling to get rid of him.
What gaping holes do you see with these lists? What can I do to fix them? Obviously I'm unwilling to compromise on the ship type as I really like calling it "The Headsman's AXE" (that's the only reason).
