Well, I did it. I took my Defender list to an SC. I wasn't going to, it was just a list I took to a local tournament for fun, but as it won that and did well in a few practice matches, I thought 'what the heck' and flew it.
The list:
Vessery VI, HLC, TIE mk.2
Omega leader, Juke, Com relay
Epsilon squadron pilot
Epsilon squadron pilot
Game 1
Vessery with VI, two Onyx squadron pilots.
Okay, I thought I'd be the only person brave (crazy) enough to bring a defender, and here I am facing three! Not only that but the table adjacent and opposite also had them, one nearly identical to mine. Interesting!
Anyway, this game was a fun one with a friendly opponent. I came at him at an angle through the 'roids, caught one defender in the open and exchanged it for an epsilon. My Vessery killed his but took a lot of damage and was finished off by the last onyx. Omega Leader dealt with him and I gained my fist victory.
Game 2
Han, gunner, lone wolf, c3p0, EU, Miranda with tactician and TLT.
Oh for a 60 minute round! I got Han down below half hits for the exchange of OL, but the final 15 mins saw him wipe out Vessery and an Epsilon. Okay, my 'round placement was a mistake, but I was out flown start to finish.
Game 3
Palpatine shuttle, Soontir, Whisper.
Played against three similar lists before and won all three matches, so I was pretty confident. He split up on approach leaving his shuttle vulnerable. I blocked soontir 's approach with an epsilon and focuses down Palpatine, half killing him very quickly. A lot of whiffed defence rolls later Vessery was down and so was an epsilon. Another round of blanks of both colours the shuttle was still alive and OL wasn't. Epsilon 2 soon followed.
Game 4
Corran, Miranda, proto a-wing.
My opponent arrived carrying a pile of UK 2015 national range sticks which was a big scary. Gave him initiative to mitigate arc dodging shenanigans. He made a very bold approach with corran, but misjudged where my PS8s would end up, and was removed by three of my four ships. Miranda bolted but I managed to trap her in a corner, and the proto died in mop up.
Game 5
Chewbo
This was one of my club mates I had travelled up with, and our only club "blue on blue" match of the day. We set up the asteroids in a ring around the edge and Chewie and Leno began a slow circle. Lacking patience I charged straight in to intercept. I exchanged Vessery for Chewie ( took five hits from an opportunist boosted HLC and blanked out with four defence dice!), one of my epsilons followed after I had leebo at half strength, but by then I had him. Trapped between the 'roids and the edge, I blocked him with my epsilon and tailed him with OL in his donut hole )some nifty flying, I thought) and even crappy red dice only postponed the victory.
Game 6
So, I'm on 3-2 and a win here means a shot at the top 8. Unlikely with my mov, but worth a shot.
My opponent sets up Soontir, Vader and a generic phantom. To cut a long story short, I got tabled. 100-0. I could not roll more than a hit or two with any shot which he easily evaded, and I don't think he got a blank dice all game. I gave two damage to Soontir and knocked the shields off the phantom and that was it. I wouldn't even say my flying was poor (though my opponent's was flawless, I'm not taking anything away from him at all!) but even average green dice might have evened things up.
Finished 3-3 and 28th overall out of 45, but a flawless win would've netted me 12th. I had gone in aiming for 3-3 and a c3p0 card and I achieved both, but that last game left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. The other list I mentioned that was similar to mine finished somewhere around 14th I think, so the Defenders put in a good showing, especially in a very competitive field (including the UK National champion and his 186th Squadron wingmen!)
Anyway, aside from me wanting to smash my dice for betraying me in at least two games it was a great day out, and I bought my Regional ticket too
Already thinking of retiring my casual list building and taking something more competitive, but we shall see...
