FFG Playmats are great

By force kin, in X-Wing

They trounce any competition I've seen.

The imagery is beautiful, the texture and density of the material is perfect - ships stay put, edges don't snag, and templates and tokens slide freely and consistently.

Been playing since wave 3, just bought a Playmat yesterday - death star 2.

Wish I had a way to interact with it when not actually playing x wing. Thought about hanging it on my wall, but don't want to poke any holes in it for fear it'll start peeling.

Does anyone else make a mousepad style Playmat? Are there any other manufacturers' offerings that are as good?

You could make a magnetic strip that clamps on both sides of the mat, then hang that on the wall.

Interesting idea! Do those come in the right sizes, though? The biggest one there is 60 cm, and the playmat is around 91.

Make one. That was a quick Google search to show the idea

I really enjoy these playmats. I own three, original Death Star, Death Star 2, and Bespin. I rotate which one I play on depending on my mood. I plan to purchase a regular starfield one as well, so my epic games don't look weird.

Could probably also put it in a 36" x 36" poster frame. Those are usually set up to pretty easily pop off the back to put pictures in it - trick would be finding one with enough flexibility in the mount to handle the mat's thickness, but I've had some in the past.

Just frame it then, though that will not be cost efficient.

Just got a Bespin mat a few weeks ago. WAY better than the vinyl ones. I swear every time I even LOOKED at one of my ships on a vinyl mat, the dang thing moved six inches. The FFG mouse mats are great, and I too need to get a star field one, for epic, or Armada.

you guys are making me want to buy a mat.

They are nice, you won't regret the decision.

Snagged death star one couple days ago. Agreed they are super nice. Really heavy. Lay flat and stay in place.

It was time to upgrade from my homemade vinyl from the fabric store. Glad I did.

I'm sure I'll end up getting all of them.

When I think about it, there are always new ships to buy instead....

But the mat is so comfy. Weird as that is to say.

Also if anyone here plays other wargames, there's a company that just released a line of 6x4 mouse pads to play games like warhammer on with different scenes. Don't know the confident of hand but our flgs just got a crap ton on shelves.

I picked up the Death Star mat last week and played on it this week. Loved it. I have a 4x6 felt-covered board I did some airbrushing to make spacey, but the mats shame my feeble efforts. Love the real mat so much I picked up Bespin two days ago, and had DSII in my hands... so close to buying both, lol.

ForceSensative: do you know the manufacturer of those mats?

I've had a GF9 mat since around Wave 2, and I ended up buying an FFG one from a store that had some they used for a tournament and were selling some off at a discounted price as they were "used", so I picked up the plain space field. It was honestly one of the best buys I've made. I love it enough that I'll probably pick up either the Endor or Yavin mat to go with it for Armada.

Gripmat for me.

I only wish I had waited to buy mats, now I have two HCD mats that I don't want to play on anymore. They are nice mats and made out of mousepad material but they pale in comparison to the FFG ones.

Any tips on how to make these mats last? For example, how to clean them, reduce fading, etc., etc., etc., :)

Deepcut for me :)

You mean the new Kraken ones from the kickstarter? Yeah, they look fantastic and are super high detail, though they have 3x3, 6x3 and 6x4 as well. And than there are those Fischkrieg mats. Nice as well, especially the mouse-pad quality ones, though most likely not as good in the image quality as the Kraken ones.

Got mine free as first prize in a store tournament. Mmmmm, free Bespin Mat :)

Huh. My experience with them has been totally the opposite. They slide too easily and often ship bases will wiggle or slide slightly when people put their fingers on them to move or hold them. The vinyl GF9 mats have been the best ones I've used so far.

Gripmat for me.

Gripmats are good, but a far cry from what they promised.
