Would you leave your Auththrusters at home?

By BlodVargarna, in X-Wing

I have a SC tomorrow and I'm debating a list with 3 T-70s. The question is: would you save 2 points by dropping AT from one of your ships in order to give another ship a better pilot skill or other upgrade?

Or are they so worth it that leaving AT off one of your ships is unwise?

Depends on your meta. If you see a lot of TLTs, keep the autothrusters.

It also depends on what you're looking at taking instead; some of the pilot abilities are just not as good as Having Autothrusters.

Also, do you have Integrated Astromech to replace them with?

Yea I do have integrated astromech.

I was thinking of Lone Wolf on my Blue Ace with R2-D6.

Depends on the pilots involved. When I'm flying Poe Dameron with Red Ace and a Stresshog, there aren't enough points for the second Autothruster, so yes, I run Red Ace with Integrated Astromech.

AT have diminishing returns the less green dice you roll. T-70s, I have found, to be very marginal returns on investment with Autothrusters at lower pilot skills. I think you'd be ok with the Lone Wolf/Integrated Astromech combo. Ideally, you could get a couple practice games to test it out, but I think it will work for you.

the lower the PS, the less likely you are to be able to control range enough times for thrusters to cancel more damage than integrated

Generic T-70s, no thrusters. Asty and Poe, yes. Red and Blue, maybe...

My area is chock full of winning TLTs, smashing everything else. I'd keep them on full.

If I'm running my T-70s....they're getting autothrusters.

But I'm usually running :

Poe

-R5-P9

-Autothrusters

Ello

-VI

-R2-D2

-Autothrusters

Gold Squadron

-TLT

-R3-A2

If I'm running T-70s.

Do you have boost? IF you have boost you take autothrusters over everything else.

No that's boost 3 agi

Punisher don't need no thruster

Low PS t70 won't either.you'll either get blown apart by range controlling aces or boost into TLT doughnut holes

IA is a very powerful upgrade on low PS. When you're high PS, then it's time tobthruster up

On 2 agility you're not going to see the same benefit as an interceptor with AT and SD.

Also at six hit points your not that vulnerable to TLT fire, unlike a squint that really must avoid any damage if at all possible.

Good question, it depends on the how much the alternative upgrade is worth. I am running a Poe and Red Ace regen build with IAs rather than ATs because I need to spare as many points as possible to run Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors with TLT. Autothrusters would be nice but the ability to ensure Poe gets his Focus token, even if bumped or stressed is worth a lot, as is the ability to keep Red Ace's Comms Relay topped up.

The TLT is also good as it gives the HWK-290 some much needed offensive capability and covers the T70s' backs to some extent. Maybe I have cut the T70s too close to the bone but we will see after the next tournament.

I fly thrusters on my t70s for sure. Current list built t accommodate them specifically is

T-70 X-Wing: · "Red Ace" (29)

· R2-D2 (4)

Autothrusters (2)

Comm Relay (3)

T-70 X-Wing: · Poe Dameron (31)

Adaptability (Increase) (0)

· R5-P9 (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Y-Wing: Gold Squadron Pilot (18)

Twin Laser Turret (6)

· R3-A2 (2)

BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

Some observations:

I went 0-3 on Sat. I won't blame my ATs, in fact, on Poe with his Poecus-Focus ability, they were indispensable to keep him alive.

I did face a lot of TLTs and also the odd range 3 shots to make them totally worth it.

Ello was, predictably not as useful on him, but I think over the course of 3 matches, he saved more damage than if he had IA.

Although, an integrated Astromech on him would have kept him and poe alive when they got zapped by a proton bomb.

For what it's worth, I've now seen four people independently decide mid-tournament that they would rather have integrated astromech than autothrusters on their T-70's.

As noted above, this is hugely meta-dependent. If you're jousting a lot or facing a lot of arc-locked knife-fighty ships, IA is definitely preferable - you're not going to be taking a lot of shots whilst out of the shooter's arc, and you'll tend to be at range 1 or 2.

If you're facing a lot of turrets, particularly with lower PS than you so you can get out of arc, be they PWT, Outrider, TLT, or the unusual not-a-TLT-turret-upgrade, AT will be much more useful.

Overall, I don't think I would have a preference, it would be a meta call, or a points call, or both.

I think there's also an element of confirmation bias - it's a lot easier to remember the occasions when discarding your Astromech saved you from a terribly-timed Blinded Pilot or Direct Hit, but it's a lot harder to remember the times when Autothrusters saved a shield - pr even the crit you didn't draw because the attack was blocked. This might well lead people to think IA is more useful when actually AT saves them more damage and more horribel crits/ship deaths in the long run.
