Two days for a regional

By bobbywhiskey, in X-Wing

I know there is the thread discussing tournament length in general, but how many people are on board with having the top 8 of a regional on a seperate day. I think it will greatly impact the event's ability to draw players from other cities and states (you know, like a REGIONAL). This seems to be a very likely trend this season.

Thoughts?

Top 8? If you have a regional with the turnout that only constitutes a Top 8, then it would likely be best to just finish it out. Now, top 16, that's a different story.

No

There are no regionals so far that have said anything about 2 days.

I wouldn't want to waste a day if I make Top 8 and lose the first round. Especially since I have to drive 4 hours to one of them. I wouldn't have the time to stay back to back, either, even at a hotel. I don't want to put even more money into it.

Northern California's regional is splitting it into two days. As someone who would have to drive 3+ hours, it's sounding more and more like I won't go. Sad cause I wanted to play one this year and my local one I most likely will be TOing.

It's a devil's bargain for sure. On the one hand, it makes it easier to schedule (i.e., the store won't have to open early or close late, and you're not requiring anyone to work overtime) and it makes it a lot easier to actually play. The top 16 will be well rested and fed for the final matches, rather than exhausted and hungry.

On the other hand, it makes it a lot harder to travel if you weren't already planning to stay overnight, and it can make it harder to schedule gaming around family, work, or other hobbies.

I would not attend a regional if it were two days. I have to work on Sundays, so I need the regional on a Saturday and have everything finish that night/early morning. Yeah, if I make the cut, I won't be getting much sleep after travel, but hey, I only have to work from 7 am to noon.

You would exclude a lot of participants, myself included. But it might still be necessary unless they implement some sort of attendance requirements.

There are at least 3 regionals doing 2 days. Most regionals will have a top 16 and 2 days is good for the game and players.

There are plenty of people willing to turn out for those two days. Last year's Tacoma regional drew around 130 players IIRC.

If you can't make time for that this year, then try to shoot for next year.

I'm not spending an extra 8 hours of annual leave just in case I get top 8. Mail carriers have Sunday off, and then a rotating day of the week off. It makes scheduling time off a pain in the ass and it could already be taken up on the annual leave calendar.

People who can't spend a whole playing X-Wing don't actually like the game that much. Just deal with it. Would also help if it was run competently and started early in the morning.

I am a X wing newbie and never been to a X wing tourney, but nonetheless I will throw out a silly opinion. I am traditional wargamer. I play a lot of ASL (Advanced Squad Leader). I go to 3-5 ASL tourneys a year. These are all 3 day events. I am shocked X wing events are only 1 day. Seems like a huge endurance test to try to do it all in one day when so many games are required. Even if you lose early why wouldn't you stick around and play new players and new lists? Have fun... Local store, sure one day, but anything bigger seems like a better solution for multiple days.

Glen Burnie regional is 108 people sold out in less then 48 hours. 2 days with a catered lunch. It'll be a much more enjoyable play experience. And I think they're trying to work out a deal with local hotels too.

But I'd rather have enjoyable play experience then a marathon day. I've done both and I'd rather play this game for fun

I highly doubt I'd ever both going to something billed as a two-day event, if I didn't know for 100% certainty that I'd have something to do for both days, in full. There better be a pretty fantastic side tournament on the second day for anyone who doesn't make the Top 8/16 cut to make it worth staying for.

You aren't just talking about a whole day once you reach a certain level of partcipation. You're talking even tightly run and starting early something that wouldn't conclude until 3am after like 17 hours. At some point that isn't palatable for the store. Hell putting players out on the road to drive home that late after that long of a day actually isn't even safe.

If Regionals are going to start drawing 124+ there are going to start to be more two day Regionals. And while that may turn some players off, to others it's a boon, irregardless it isn't like events won't be filled to capacity whether it is run over one or two days.

FFG should look into allow stores to seperate Swiss into flights for these essentially con-sized Regionals. I mean some of these X-wing events are going to draw better at Regionals then say Warmachine will at Gencon, or even better then every non-Netrunner LCG event at Gencon.

One such event sold out in 48 hours. So if it drove some players away, it brought in others.

One of the regionals in my area (Tacoma, WA) ran a regional over 2 days last year and are doing it again. No ****ing way would I attend a regional or any event that demands a hotel stay. It's a **** hobby, not a lifestyle.

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the number of regional tournaments. Does anyone know the number of regionals this year compared to last year?

I was one of the 90 participants at last year's Chicago regional. This year they are doing the two day tourney, with day 2 having the top 16, as well as a revenge tourney for those who didn't make the cut.

I probably won't do it because of the added expense of the overnight accommodations. I could see this dividing the classes of players even more. It used to be those who could afford to attend the elite events and the rest of us who attended the midlevel and local events. Now it will be those who afford the elite and mid level events, followed by those of us who can only attend local events. It will only serve to drive your average players away from the tournament scene.

My personal opinion is that it should be a one day tourney unless it's being hosted by a multiday convention. I wonder if they are going to expand the GENCON tourney across more than one day as well.

Gencon is already across two days. FFG does not run the Top Cuts same day as thier qualifying rounds at conventions.

Another, probably better, alternative would be to allow players to attend one regional. Their choice which one, but if they go to one - that's it, that's their 'X-Wing Regionals' experience.

I mean, yeah, Tacoma had 120+ people last year...but 1/4 of them had also been at the Portland-area regional. And who knows how many others.

Capping the number of regionals a player can attend to just one would allow a lot more slots in the regional locations that are already identified. (Which is to say - my gut feeling is that the current number of regional events is good...it's just a problem that A LOT of players hit up multiple events, which artificially inflates the player counts at those events)

Vancouver Regionals did this last year, and I really liked it. The 'loser tournament' on the second day allowed those who lost in the top 16 to join in with one loss counted, then those who lost top 8 could join with two losses, etc. It meant that nobody had to stop playing.

Granted, my opinion might be different if a hotel stay was involved.

I like that the Mountain View (NorCal) Regional is two days, with an asterisk: I'd drive to, say, Sacramento for a second day, but I don't think I'd drive further. I like my long rides on my motorcycle, but I don't love long rides on my motorcycle. So I understand the mixed feelings on it.

I do think a two-day Regional should strive to provide a meaningful incentive to come back for the second day, by which I mean something beyond the chance to do well in the cut. For example, assume a 140-person Regional, at $15 per person; that's $3600. The store can afford to give the Top 16 a JM5K, or the Top 32 a TIE Adv. Prototype (dunno what the cut would be).

Also, player/public safety has should be taken into consideration. At some point there are going to be very bad/fatal car accidents for players driving home early in the morning after a very long day.
