Two days for a regional

By bobbywhiskey, in X-Wing

All big events should be two days, IMO. Playing too many games in one day takes the fun out of it.

Yeah, it's a good thing marathons are run over 2 days, it really takes the fun out of running if you had to do it all at once.

I dont run Marathons for a (couple of) reason(s)

I enjoy playing X-Wing. 6 Games in a day is fun, any more than that and I stop having fun.

Day 1: 6 matches.

Day 2: Knock out matches for the 8-16 best. Escalation(or some other thing) side tournament for the rest :)

Massachusetts is probably going to do a 2-day event. We're going to rent a space to run the event as we did last year, and generally venues don't like you renting their space until 3 a.m. We can do the elimination rounds at the store next day. It's still to be determined, and I can't speak for the store, but they did a fantastic job at running the event last year.

If we were to do it one day, and one of the NYC guys makes it to the final table like they did last year, then they're not getting home until around 7 a.m. the next day. And if they want to avoid a hotel entirely, they would have to leave NYC around 5-6 a.m. on tournament day. That's a 25-26 hour day not including the time to actually get up and get ready in the morning, I'm not sure that's safe to be driving anyway.

I believe the store was hoping to confirm by this Thursday as to whether or not they'll go to two days, though that did seem to be the anticipation.

I mean, if I regularly made the top 8 at a store tournament, maybe I'd be a bit bummed, but only because it's hard losing a whole weekend to a game instead of spending time with my family.

But a top 8 isn't exactly another full day of X-Wing -- it's three rounds, if you're winning.

... But I see that also being an awful factor for folks who DO travel the distance. We don't have another regionals THAT close to us, and I can't imagine travelling a long time to MAYBE play a single round of elimination.

Basically, I'm split on if I hate it or don't mind it. I think I'd rather just call one entire day a wash and bang out everything, but that doesn't make it much more feasible for everyone else (and it's not like playing X-Wing until 3am is going to make your Sunday a blast, either).

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the number of regional tournaments. Does anyone know the number of regionals this year compared to last year?

I was one of the 90 participants at last year's Chicago regional. This year they are doing the two day tourney, with day 2 having the top 16, as well as a revenge tourney for those who didn't make the cut.

I probably won't do it because of the added expense of the overnight accommodations. My personal opinion is that it should be a one day tourney unless it's being hosted by a multiday convention. I wonder if they are going to expand the GENCON tourney across more than one day as well.

Gencon is already across two days. FFG does not run the Top Cuts same day as thier qualifying rounds at conventions.

Gencon had like 256 players, way more than your typical regional.

I'm not buying the two day excuse. I've seen 7 rounds with a top cut to 8 before and that was about 14 hours. I just don't see the reason to break it up over 2 days, especially since you have to have 150 players to have 7 rounds now. No, keep it to one day and don't wait to start until 1pm.

It's not really feasible for most gaming stores to be open for 14 hours at a stretch, nevermind that that number is basically a perfectly run event; with 75 minute rounds for 9 rounds + the untimed final(lets assume it took ~1 hour) you've only got an hour and 45 minutes left for time between rounds and some sort of food break. In actual practice even most of the best run events will go longer than that. And sure, you're only subjected to that full time if you make it to the very last table, but while it takes 150 players for 7 rounds, it only takes 77 to go from Top 8 to Top 16, which leaves you at the same number of rounds as the 7 with Top 8 for anyone that makes top table or the cut.

Yes, a store is probably going to have to make some sacrifices to host an event like this, but being open for 12+ hours, and paying the accompanying overtime unless they can find people willing to volunteer to keep things actually running smoothly, is a lot to ask.

I am fine with a two-day, and have already signed up for one, but I don't have to travel, it's local for me.

While I would think having more Regionals would help, I don't know what the scene is for stores. Are there are venues that want to hold a Regionals and are not? How many applications were rejected because FFG thought they'd be to close? Saying we should have more Regionals, does not mean it would be feasible to have more. I would love to know if this is even logistically possible.

I imagine it's less rejected applications that non-existent ones.

If I want to run a 5k I can. I could even be a 5k champion and never run a marathon. I'd still be a runner and enjoy running.

So yeah, not comparable.

The store doesn't have the room for 100+ players, so will be renting space, as they did last year. Last year it was held in a hotel conference hall, it easily could have supported 200 people. The problem is that hotels don't want you there until 3am.
