Not since AoS came out they don't, now they cry in a corner like the rest of us...excuse me I need a moment.
My wife will play and to be honest, we don't have any kind of local scene. Surprisingly, she doesn't mind some aspects of X-Wing that normally bother her in a game. On console games or tabletop games, if there is a gender, she wants to be able to play a female character. So far, she hasn't mentioned that aspect here. She knows there are a few female pilots, but so far she is flying lists fairly objectively. Granted, the generics can be whatever, so that helps. It is one aspect of this, that in spite of canon and in spite of the EU, should be expanded in X-Wing. Female aces. The Ghost will help with that, but there is still a wide chasm...
I keep telling her that I want her to play in tournaments with me, cause she is beautiful enough to make most guys uncomfortable to play against her... lucky me! But I guess that could be ruled as collusion, so I guess I shouldn't pursue that line of thought... except I would enjoy watching her win one, even if she beat me.
Maybe it's time to introduce a Womens Quota into X-Wing. And Tabletop-Gaming in general.

I don't care what sex, age or SIZE of person/gamer is... also if I was married I wouldn't be worried about other women.
My wife won't even humor me and play one game. She isn't a big fan of Star Wars in general.
However, if this was Space Balls the Game, she would be all over it.

When I saw this thread title, I kind of sighed and thought, I bet this isn't about Easter.
Before this thread, I have never heard of the term or been referred to as a "gaming chick." Everybody I've met has referred to me by my first name. I do the same.
So to maybe answer your question, my store has one female that plays. (Me) There are a range of ages otherwise. We are a friendly group. So there are different situations everywhere.
Edited by JediAutobotthe reason we dont see many and/or none at all is because you fat ******* dirty smell bearded freaks sit at the FLGS and stink up the place with your greasy chip fingers and foul odor. Many a time has my girlfriend commented on the state of game store or the people in there.
Any bets for which page we get to before this thread gets locked?
I pick seven.
Yeah I think that's a stereotype that's long since passed, if it ever truly existed. Certainly every gaming store I've been to has been welcoming and fairly diverse by way of backgrounds and tastes, and my better half is an absolute shark at a few games like Star Fluxx and Boss Monster. Gaming is an all-inclusive pursuit.
Although dead, that stereotype is still a big part of the reason for the lack of women in X-wing.
I used to work at a comic/game store - we also carried all sorts of magazines so we had a lot of women customers who came in for mags and comics - but aside from young girls who played Pokemon or Neopets cards, we had few female gamers.

I feel ya, but if you were still emotionally attached when that game came out, you've only got yourself to blame for putting up with it for so long.
For me, AoS was like hearing what horrible choices an ex girlfriend is making. Wow. Dodged that bullet...
The FLGS I frequent is pretty diverse (if overwhelmingly white, because Portland); our D&D group is male, female, trans, straight, gay... and that extends to the overall population of the store.
I see many women in RPG and boardgame groups, but there does seem to be a disparity in the number of women at "wargaming" tables. I very rarely see women playing X-wing; sometimes Armada or some kind of War-whatever.
While I think there is a great, evolving culture of inclusion in my gaming community, there are also still the situations and men that make women feel unwelcome, or like some target to prey upon.
I really hope this thread doesn't devolve and get locked; it's important to talk about this stuff. And maybe if these threads didn't usually devolve into flamewars or MRA's trying to outsmart a keyboard, more women would feel welcome, and participate in, this great pastime.
my local group is pretty good. the guys are friendly. while my wife doesn't play, she entered the store with me once and she didn't feel uncomfortable. however, we only have a couple of girls playing, almost everybody is a guy. I am not sure of the reason but I think part of it is social. just as our society has a lot of women working but still has issues with equality (women generally earn less than men in the same position), so tabletop games are generally not regarded favorably by girls.
also lets not forget that if you look at the star wars movies the fighter pilots and protagonists are mostly men. perhaps that doesn't encourage girls to play x wing.
There is three women who frequent my store.
My wife, one of my daughters (adult age) and another female gamer.
Usually they play Magic, MLP or roleplay.
I think its just maybe becuase it IS Xwing.
Xwing is more of a "war" type game. Where Magic and MLP is maybe viewed differently.
The only time my wife plays is if she gets to fly all of my Epic ships (All, even mixing factions) against a 100pt build.
Our customers are your average joes. All shower, have jobs and sanificant others (mostly).
Completely down to chance. In the town where I am now, there are two gaming shops within a 10 minute drive of each other. One smells of dog and has the aforementioned fat neckbeards who interact with non-peers with grunts and avoidance of eye contact. The other had a woman playing Vanguard/Pokemon with her two sons aged about 10, and some really lovely guys.
Thinking about it the female gamers I know generally all strongly prefer to game at home, or at a friend's house, and don't necessarily have a large space they could make a dedicated gaming space (they often play on coffee tables etc). Those I know who have gone to tabletop clubs and such have said they did so more for the social aspect, and games elsewhere. I wonder if that is another factor which reduces the number of ladies which turn to minis games.
I would be really curious to hear how the ladies here got started on the game (or miniature wargames in general).
I have never encountered the "stereotype" as a major group at a gaming store. There may be a FEW but the majority are nowhere near the stereotype. Even the filthy magic players.
It's like the stereotypes with gamers (video games).
The vast majority of my customers are not overweight or socially awkward. And a significant portion of them are women or teenage girls.
I won't go further into this, because doing so would result in insults and a potential flame war ![]()
I think OP was just doing this to stir things up though, there was literally no reason to start this thread other than to insult people.
Who cares, really???
Women make things better.
Women are human beings. They don't "Make things better". Individual people make things better, by being cool people.
Women can be just as awful as guys, and it dehumanizes them to promote the idea that a person's sex is some kind of positive contribution to a group.
Since we're going for the "Fat smelly nerd" stereotype in this thread, one of the female players in a store championship I played at was huge. Should I have complained because she was a fat nerd playing X-Wing? Or does she get a pass for being a woman?
I just played X-Wing and didn't care, because there are fat nerds, I'm one of them.

Quote of the year!
If anything the gamers I know are mostly thin to the point of being undernourished.
This particular quote from the Detectorists (I found the series really charming) I think sums it up:
Becky can't even begin to comprehend this.
Well, why do you want her to?
Because it's important to me. I want her to understand it.
Well, she does understand that it's important to you.
That's enough, isn't it? You don't need her to get into it.
It's a hobby, that's all.
Men have hobbies and women don't understand them, that's the way it's always been.
I mean, how many female train spotters are there?
How many women commit to an afternoon reorganising their vinyl in alphabetical order?
You don't want to spend an evening with a beautiful woman just comparing comic book collections, do you?
What you want is your partner to... shake her head, roll her eyes and look at you and say...
"You and your hobbies! I'll never understand men."
I had a friend once.
He had a cactus.
Same cactus sitting on his windowsill for 15 years.
And then one day, someone gave him a second cactus.
And within six months... he had to move to a bigger house with enough space for his cactus collection.
Now, a woman, she could have... two, three cacti, and she'd say... "Yes, that's probably enough cacti for me."
Now don't get me wrong. I'm married, with kids and slowly, oh so slowly turning my wife into a gamer. Also, the younger generation (dare I say it, the millennials) are a bit more equal opportunity in their nerdiness. This is fantastic.
Anecdotal: At halcon last year, I was dressed in full Stormtrooper plate, I came across some young ladies dressed as the main cast of RWBY. I was like That's so cool! Man, I wish my daughter was here, she'd love a pic.
Anyway, turns out they'd be there tomorrow, I was bringing the kids tomorrow.
Just as I was about to leave, in a cobbled together imperial officer outfit (needed mobility, two small children with me). A girl comes up: "Hey are you the stormtrooper?" "Yeaahh?" "Great, we were looking for you!" Long story short, my little 6 year old Stormtrooper with the pink rank pauldron got a picture with her heroes.
Another anecdote: Mordheim. My first random opponent at a local tourney was a teenage girl. I thought this was awesome. Of course, I was also a teenage boy at the time. So... there's that.
TLDR: Lady nerds are glorious, they exist as much as men but in older generations because of social indoctrination i suppose you see them less.
We should be at least a little thankful for the millennial generation, because they are getting a few things right - like it or not.
Also: Gender roles have been in constant flux for literally ever. Want more women gamers? Encourage them correctly.
Edited by DariusAPBThe fact that you call them gaming chicks and think it's okay because you are joking is part of the problem. I know plenty of girls that game but I would never call any of them a chick. It's the 21st century.
Not only are there no normal men
Brilliant way to start.
In Europe there's few female gamers playing FFG board/mini games competitively, but we (gamers) don't differentiate - if a person is cool - that person is cool. And we can hold a normal conversation...
If said person is not cool, be they male or female, well, we finish the game and move on.
Being a nerd is more mainstream these days and almost all of us have decent social skills, so yeah...
