SC: Can Rieekan Provide Tourney Winning MoV?

By IronNerd, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I'm considering the following list for a local Store Championship tomorrow:

400 Points

CR90A - Rieekan, TRC, Jaina's Light

CR90B - SW-7 Ion Batteries

CR90B - SW-7 Ion Batteries

CR90B - SW-7 Ion Batteries

MC30c Torpedo - Ordnance Experts, Rapid Reload

MC30c Torpedo - Ordnance Experts, Rapid Reload

Wedge Antilles

Tycho Celchu

Likely go with Most Wanted, Dangerous Territory, and Hyperspace Assault. Haven't seen many super Demolishers around this area, but you never know when they might show up. Regardless, CR90Bs with SW-7s can put out a fair amount of consistent damage from medium range. Mostly I like the idea of 6 zombie ships, with a couple of them being very hard hitters. Issue is, I figure it will be pretty difficult to pull big wins with this list. Think this would work? Would it better with Mon Mothma? ...or should I not try to make medium range CR90s work and do something else?

This list would be better with Mon Mothma and hit and run tactics. I'd also recommend dropping rapid reload on both MC's and getting both titles, makes them ridiculously hard to kill with Mon Mothma, then use a CF command to get the extra black die. Change the Jaina's Light to a CR90-B with SW-7's and no title.

If you do the above I'd also swap out the two squadrons for 3 generic A-wings.

If you make all the changes, I think you have a 9 or 10 point bid as well, which you will want for last-first activation on an MC.

In fact, here is a list

Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 389/400

Commander: Mon Mothma

Assault Objective: Most Wanted
Defense Objective: Fire Lanes
Navigation Objective: Dangerous Territory

CR90 Corvette B (39 points)
- SW 7 Ion Batteries ( 5 points)

CR90 Corvette B (39 points)
- SW 7 Ion Batteries ( 5 points)

CR90 Corvette B (39 points)
- SW 7 Ion Batteries ( 5 points)

CR90 Corvette B (39 points)
- SW 7 Ion Batteries ( 5 points)

MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63 points)
- Admonition ( 8 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)

[ flagship ] MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63 points)
- Mon Mothma ( 30 points)
- Foresight ( 8 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)

3 A-Wing Squadrons ( 33 points)

I ran a CR90/MC30 Rieekan list for my last store championship for funzies, and to be hones I really just found myself missing Mon Mothma. The big thing she offers is hit/crit rerolls at close/fighter range which can REALLY save your bacon if anyone has black crit effects. And Rieekan can be mitigated if there is a squadron heavy build that can finish ships off at the end of the round anyway.

That said, it was SUPER fun when something died but was not quite dead and hadn't activated yet.

So you guys are telling me more or less what I thought I'd hear. I really need to try Mon Mothma some more, it's been a while. I find myself gravitating toward Dodonna and building lists like this:

387 Points

CR90A - Dodonna, TRC, Jaina's Light

MC30c Torpedo - Ordnance Experts, Assault Proton Torpedoes

MC30c Torpedo - Ordnance Experts, Assault Proton Torpedoes

MC30c Torpedo - Ordnance Experts, Assault Proton Torpedoes

CR90B - Dodonna's Pride

Luke

3 x A-Wing

I just really like the admirals that add (or in this case, manipulate in a strange way) damage. ...then again, I look at that list and wonder why I don't just fly Imperial and use Demolisher... I might just end up using Ackbar this weekend, I've only used him once. There's got to be a reason people like him...

Edit: Something was wrong with my calculator, I knew it looked wrong. List updated.

I run Rieekan with foresight and 4 vettes all with Turbolasers. I don't understand why Mon Mothma is so good. I feel that if a ship is in blue range of a vette that taking away one dice will not keep it alive. ISD with 4blue 4 reds will wipe it out. Demo will wipe it out. Please help me understand.

One of Riekaan's best combos is with named squadrons, especially Escort squadrons such as Luke and Wedge. I don't know if Riekaan is able to get the right MOV with only ships.

What makes Mon Mothma good is she is literally the only thing that can mitigate black critical damages, which are the most devastating critical effects right now. Rerolling even one hit/crit to cancel an ACM or APT is HUGE. and yeah, it won't always work out where it saves a life, but with fast, zoomy ships you should be actively dodging ISD front arcs anyway. That's the only thing that keeps you in the game if you fly tiny ships. So she is super good with MC30s cause they are black dice ships that can actually somewhat mitigate black die crits.

One thing that people forget though is that Riekaan offers an alternative solution to this: take the full damage, proceed to continue with the turn unhindered.

He's a great option for a suicide blocker or MC30 because he literally doesn't care if you kill the ship, he still gets maximum usage out of it.

Rieekan is a different kind of insurance, the issue I have with him is you still lose points if your ship dies so he isn't likely to gain you much more than 6-4 wins unless you still fly skillfully. If I fly skillfully, I get more use from Mon Mothma, another type of insurance.

Now where I have seen Rieekan shine is on a two MC-80 Ackbar list with all named squadrons. That was brutally efficient....

I tried a similar list at a SC using Neb-bs. It's listed in fleet builds under "Small Fry". Basically, it was 4 bare Neb-Bs, a corvette carrying Rieeken and a MC30 with APT, supported by 4 A-wings. It did not do as well as I hoped. It comes out strong at first, but once the Nebs are in close range or start to overfly their targets they are almost useless. I finished in the middle of the pack with an 5-5 loss, 8-2 loss, and a 9-1 win. It really shines against ISDs if you can focus fire on one. The 9-1 win was also helped because my opponent selected the Most Wanted objective, so I got to throw extra dice at the ISD, brought four Nebs and the MC30 right in its face and concentrated fire. It went down in turn 2 or 3. Against mixed fleets or rebel fleets the build was underwhelming, but maybe I could have flown it better as well.
