So I have almost come to the scenario where an effect could happen where my ship is destroyed, but I have DeadMansSwitch which when I am destroyed, each ship at range 1 would suffer one damage... and the last ship on the enemy team had only one hull left which would destroy him with DeadManSwitch...... who wins.... is the the person with initiative? Is it a tie?... I have no clue
EVERY SHIP BEING DESTROYED.... WHO WINS

The game ends at the end of a round if all of a player’s ships are destroyed. The player with no ships remaining loses, and the player with at least one ship remaining wins. If both players’ last remaining ships are destroyed in the same round, the game ends in a draw.
"Winning the Game", Rules Reference, p. 20
In the finals of tournaments, draws are treated as wins for the player with Initiative. That is the only time they aren't draws anymore.
Scored as a draw.
Exception is if a winner MUST be determined in elimination rounds in which case the player with Initiative wins.

This just happened at a local Store Championship, simultaneous fire with 2 opposing players killing each other, the player with initiative was given the title.....what a way to lose.

That sucks in so many ways. To me that is a case where an proper "prize split" should be done although there may be things that can't be split (like a future bye) which the "winner" would be given first rights to.
[sarcasm]Of course having a tie and the splitting the prize would be collusion so both players would need to be disqualified letting the third place person win. [/sarcasm] Guess this is another example of why the "you can't have ties" mentality sucks.

The worst part is if the one who decided on initiative GAVE IT AWAY and loses because of that. Ouch.
So, the first and second place prizes should be pooled, and anything that there's two of should be given one to each player, and anything that there's one of should go to the "winner" if they want it? That's exactly what happened.

Good. There is some sense in the world.
Now if the final two could agree to take a Draw and have this happen without it being called collusion I think there would be a number of people that are happy to get done with a tournament an hour plus faster.
