I'm ok with this being set at the beginning of the game and not on the fly during each round. It does, however, make room for a card that could do exactly that. Maybe eventually we'll see both options on a range of cards.
Dual Upgrade Reference Card
This plus Veteran Instincts and A-Wing Test Pilot could be all kinds of fun. A one point cost for a three PS boost.
At the beginning of the combat is beautiful. It's situational, but for a specific range of PS values this thing is better than a 0pt Decoy, and it's zero points.
Even in casual games, being able to walk up, see the other guys list, then tweak your stats is perfectly handy.
Totally predict a [missile]/[torpedo] card that lets you equip two weapons during listbuilding and pick which one you have at the start of the fight. Assault vs Homing missiles, anyone? ![]()
yes, it is pretty bleh
0 points worth of pretty bleh
but I know there's going to be just one ******* who puts this on his bumpmaster (instead of intimidation) in order to block my conner Ks
interestingly, not a terrible option for Manaroo bumpmaster. Drags him down to the same PS as the torpmasters he can support with his ability. I can imagine a lot of shenanigans when you get 3 jumpmasters, one with int agent that can also enable jumpmasters to deadeye after a b-roll or while stressed/bumped etc., moving in any order you want
Contracted Scouts (deadeye, r4, extra munitions, plasma)
-1 4lom [34]
-1 Boba [34]
Manaroo (adaptability, APL, feedback, intelligence agent)
can ditch APL to upgrade Boba boat to carry proton torpedoes; maybe toss on an overclocked r4?
Edited by ficklegreendiceI think the ability to change it just before the game is pretty great. Not as good as being able to sideboard upgrades, but certainly a new measure of adaptability we've never seen.
I mentioned this a few months ago, but I'm excited that this dual card mechanic could see its way to new ordnance cards. These rules erase the prospect of infinite ammo, but would be cool to have a choice between say a shield disrupting effect like plasma torpedoes and and ace hitting Homing missile as you belly up to the table.
0pt filler card. nothing to build a list around. I'm sure some one will build a trick around it but it takes the same place as Predator so moving along
So Adaptability is basically a lesser Veteran Instincts with some extra rules that nobody is ever going to use?
Still. Free +1 PS for anyone with an open EPT. Nothing wrong with that.
Edited by DarthEnderXStill disappointed you can't flip it during a game. Would have been a very interesting mechanic. As is the card is a lot more 'meh' to me.
Will still see a ton of use though, gonna have to get it in my head that an EPT slot I haven't used is worth +1 PS.
Sometimes a +1 increase to PS skill is all that is needed. For example Wes Janson to fire before PS9/8 Aces in a Reb squad. This allows you to do that for free, and use that point else where. It will find uses, Im sure.
SIDEBOARDS!!!
Now you have that ability to see what is coming and make some minor changes to your squadron from match to match.
I've suspected that this is some type of test upgrade to see how well it does and how well people accept it. While both sides should be the same cost and use the same upgrade slot this still leaves plenty of room for upgrades that could be used different ways. I'm thinking that ordnance like this (although "discard" needs to mean gone instead of just flip it over and use the other side) that will give you the choice of what to be packing could make it much more viable. If you could choose Assault or Homing Missiles instead of locking into the choice before the game ever starts would be an example.

The backside of a dual upgrade card could very easily be something like:
Action: Discard this card.
That makes whatever is on the other side kind of like a reloadable one-shot EPT.

But isn't flipping cards just a tournament thing. I mean cards say DISCARD and the only reason you don't in a tournament is because you still need them around to count points where you're all done.
Of course the differences between casual and tournament play could keep dual upgrade ordnance as just a pipe dream.

Helps Xwings, thats for sure. Anything to keep their cost down. You can run a Wedge at PS10 for 0 xtra points! Woo hoo! Luke and Wes PS9 for 0 points! I know VI is just 1 point, but sometimes you need that **** point when you build your squad and have 11pts left and just want that ONE to have a bandit in there, or an academy pilot, or TLT instead of Ion Turret. Great card for Cracken also, this brings him to PS9 for no extra points, to give any Rebel a free action after he attacks. Brings Mangler Cannon Ten Numb to PS9, no reason to put more points into Bwings! Free upgrades, I like em!
Wrong thread. Oh, look at that...

So, you put adaptability on the -1 side, Boba forces you to discard it, gaining you 2PS?
So, you put adaptability on the -1 side, Boba forces you to discard it, gaining you 2PS?
Who in the nine hells would spend the glorious fett for 0 pt card?
he's there to DERP palplovers, tear engines of decimators and make miranda scream in agony as her precious TLT gets shredded.
And I'M NOT EVEN SPEAKING ABOUT HOW GRAND THE PROSPECT OF DEMOLISHING HUGE SHIPS MODS IS!
So why would I want to use the decrease side? And also, guessing we'll eventually have something that can flip over dual upgrades during a game.
I built a list today that wanted a decrease. It happens.
Also. Don't ever forget and leave it wrong side up. That's locked for the game.
Yup, you want to move first, and shoot first with one particular ship, you need all your ships to be the same PS, and it can be really useful to do that.
What I like about this is that it doesn't preclude future Dual Upgrades having mechanisms for flipping them to the other side during play.
However, it also doesn't say what happens when it's discarded (e.g. by Boba) because per tournament rules, discarded cards are flipped face down...
So, you put adaptability on the -1 side, Boba forces you to discard it, gaining you 2PS?
Theoretically, yes. Presumably you put it on -1 for a reason, so that might be annoying. As noted, I think it's unlikely anyone would do so, but you can. I can see a situation where doing so reverses movement order of two ships, so you know they're going to collide next turn, leading to some horrible action-denying train-wreck.
Test case, i put it on Vader,
If i am facing a bunch of low ps ships i can push vader down to 8 pilot skill to be the same as some other 8 pilot skill ships i have in the fleet in order to move and shoot in the order i want. But if i am facing a bunch of ps 9 guys i can bump him to 10 and out ps them. This card is insanely strong.
Exactly so. Imagine a TIE advanced squad with Darth Vader and Juno Eclipse, with Palpatine in his zoom-mobile hanging out back. Not exactly a million miles from popular squads.
Vader often packs Veteran Instincts, giving him PS11. Give him adaptability as a straight swap, and PS10 is still good - since you get an extra point of initiative bid against a PS10 Poe, so you're probably not losing anything (except versus another PS11 Vader or Wedge).
However, if you're up against someone you'd have lost initiative to anyway, or you're up against someone with no PS8+ ships (Dash Rendar and 2 B-wings, for example, or a swarm), then put the card down upside down. Vader is now PS8, meaning he and Juno can move and shoot in whichever order is best for you - so you can avoid collisions, and Juno's juke+accuracy corrector can take out shields for an advanced targeting computer critical to slam into the hull.
Some players will look at this and think "It doesn't do what I want, so I don't like it" and some players will look at this and think "Now I know what it does, how can I make it work for me"
And that will be the difference between failure and victory.
Thanks for posting this, it's like I thought.
On an unrelated note: how hard is it to rotate an image 90 degrees?

Yeah, but it is a weird effect, and I'm wondering where they are going with this design. Especially since the rules card doesn't mention discarding.
Either we will see more upgrade killers like Boba, in combination with underpriced upgrades with detrimental effects if discarded, or this is a one of a kind.
Dual sided upgrades with a discard action?
Indeed. That's a potential mechanic right there; something like "unstable power core" or whatever - gives you a bonus for cheap, but needs to make a 'burnout' roll much like the cloaking device - and the back of the card is not merely a blank face, but is actively causing you stress every turn or something similar.
Equally, action-reloadable missiles sound cool. Especially for a large ship.

Obi Wan Kenobi crew. Must start face up, flips face down to discard a tractor, stress, or ion token, becomes an awesome force ghost forevermore, giving the equipped ship some sort of free focus ability akin to Poe's only better..

I honestly don't understand why people thought you may have been able to switch it every round of the game. Were they not having enough games go to time??
