Decline of the Falcon

By thestggrwng, in X-Wing

Recently ran a Chewie with Luke and Predator. (no engine upgrade or C-3PO, I know, shocking) made top 4. Noticed though that very few falcons were out and about. same for the last few Store championships. Has the meta and the half points driven the falcon to the fringe of the Meta? Or is it just not what people want to run right now?

half points + TLTs

end of thread.

I consistently run a Decimator. Half points makes it a bit worse, but it doesn't really fear TLTs.

TLTs are consistent vs. low agility pancakes, but that's not necessarily the same thing as being super threatening.

Honestly, the biggest threat to my high pt cost pancake has been Omega Leader. If you're running ships that cost a lot, you're not running a high volume of ships, and that's when OL gets you...

So my question is this, because Falcon's got "OP" when you could consistently tank out 2 or three evades to avoid damage and with engine keep many ships from taking shots and now that TLT negates a lot of that, Would going back to an old school slimmer all attack Falcon be viable?

I don't understand why I don't see more Falcons. It's still a super solid ship and for some reason people aren't teching against it. Regarding half points: who cares, just win. Regarding TLTs, I still don't see it as an auto-victory. The Falcon has a big base and great range control, it can avoid some shots just by being within Range 1, and some of those TLT shots will roll badly enough that 3PO and/or the Evade action will matter. You have 13 hit points to burn through. That gives you some time to dump 4-dice shots into Y-wings and start thinning the herd. There's another 40 or so points of supporting ship to tackle TLTs with, as well.

I'm guessing people are just a bit bored of it. Some players have been flying the thing constantly since it came out and there are newer toys to play with :)

I won a store champ with a Falcon but i rather deliberately chose not to worry about a quad TLT matchup.

The problem isn't really with the Falcon, but like, what are you running your Falcon with?

Seriously, Stresshog is basically just a better Biggs. It becomes the alpha target and is great for that purpose, but players are used to flying against it now and fairly decent at staying out of the huge da-da-danger zone.

You can run a cheap Falcon with like...what, a Z-95 and a Regen Poe? A Tactician Miranda? Stresshog and a TLT (probably best option). If you fly less than 3 ships, Omega Leader is a massive threat to your game plan, unless your dice are the super lucky kind. If you're flying A "cheap" Falcon and like, 2 TLTs, what's your game plan for Soontir (or now the Inquisitor)? Stresshog arc or bust?

Imho, a Falcon that ballparks 50pts is a solid ship at that cost, but it doesn't have many options for two solid wingmen.

As above, mov TLT

Also Palp aces and brobots, thrusters galore

And anti 3po tech in crackshot and juke (and omega L!)

May also be that everyone is sick to their stomach after wave 5 made it the "do or die" option along with deci whisper (later soontir) and dash corran

The decline of the falcon is a huge boon for the variety of lists we get to see out and about, from locals to worlds

It's a beautiful model with a very limited set of builds (build?) that basically have to focus on the Pwt

Contrast with the new Scout jump master, which can go PWT, torp boat or bumpmaster (not counting manaroo for potential support builds, which may synergize with a bumpmaster build)

Hell, even the deci is far more customizable though people don't seem to care about its more interesting offerings. The deci can roll as Palpmobile, oicuun (even infinite palp oicuun block city :o), Darth deci and bombs. The falcon has...an unused missile slot?

Its one widely competitive gimmick, being fat, is now thankfully easily counterable. Sadly, it's got no real room to adapt from there :(

THANK GOODNESS! GOOD RIDDANCE!

and my real feelings are: "Great, now we can see some real diversity" both in opponent and in my own list building.

My random idea:

Lando 44, 3P0 3, PTL 3, Homing Missile 5, Nien Nunb 1, Guidance Chips 0, Title 1 = 57

Eaden Vrill 32, HLC 7, Intel Agent 1, Anti-Pursuit Lasers 2 = 42

Against a lot of opponents, your first round shot is a 4 hits from a Homing Missile and 4 hits from an HLC. From that point, Vrill uses the HLC as much as possible, but also goes for blocks to set up shots for Lando. You can even do stuff like block someone, use Barrel Roll from Lando's ability to get Vrill off the target, then shoot the initially blocked ship with Vrill.

The fact that everyone isn't using them anymore actually has me excited to finally start playing with mine again.

Last store Champs I was at had 4 Falcons - 3 with Poe and one slimmed down one with Dash.

Decivader is still very good as it crushes aces (literally lol). I imagine a VI Han can still be pretty useful if you can figure out how to beat TLT as it will dodge all the aces.

You are right, people are not building to counter the falcon anymore. But they dont have to, autothrusters and TLT being popular kind of takes care of that already.

The Falcon is still decent, but it really isnt that great anymore in a meta where AT(+Regen) is everywhere. It's not even so much the TLT as long as its <3-4, but do you know who is one of the most popular ships right now?

That's right, Poe, and 38pt Poe can solo just about any 60+pts Falcon (same as Corran used to but cheaper and with virtually no risk)

Decimators do a bit better because of more health +free crit+Palpatine which helps them win the damage race against TLT but overall Palp+2Aces is superior to Deci+1Ace in the current meta and the tournament results reflect that.

Dont get me wrong, they are still good ships and can place high if your local meta allows for it.

But i wouldnt say the Falcon is top tier anymore and has actually fallen slightly behind the Decimator.

FFG is probably already looking to cash in with a Force Awakens Falcon using updated tech.

TLT Autothrusters

enough for falcon to do a boost out of the window

The basic truth is that everything in the meta right now is a bad matchup for YT-1300s

  • Crack Shot BSP Swarms
  • Omega Leader
  • Autothruster Fel / Whisper + Palpatine
  • TLTs (with or without Stress Hog)
  • Autothruster Poe + Regen / Miranda-TLT Regen
  • Dual Aggressors with AutoThruster

Everything on this list is a bad match-up for Falcons, and that list represents about 95% of the top meta at tourneys right now.

I am glad Falcons aren't nearly as prevalent, but it's perhaps swung too far. It seems this game (perhaps due to the lack of thoroughness in playtesting that they admitted to in that recent podcast) swings wildly from overpowered fad to overpowered fad. TIE Swarm to B-Wing Biggs to Phantom to Fat Turret to Autoceptors to TLT to Palp Aces. Despite having a wealth of ships and upgrades to select from, the meta invariably collapses into a handful of power lists (i.e., boring). Probably why I am increasing of the opinion that this game is far better as a casual/non-competitive game.

Soon TB toting defenders will utterly invalidate creepio.

The saddest thing for me is that I dislike the mechanical implementation of this ship, which is one of my absolute favourites, so much, that I am happy that it is gone. I wish the Falcon would have been designed with the know how that FFG has gained with the system by now. Look at the JM5K, it just screams fun with all of its crazy versions. The YT-1300 would have deserved to be something like that.

the yt-1300 was also wave 2, so it's understandable that it's an archaically designed mess :P

half points + TLTs

Half points doesn't actually effect it that much, but like the decloak nerf everyone stopped playing it.

Han and Poe is a very strong list, you just have to cross your fingers and hope you don't get paired with the quad TLT guy.

half points completely ruins the falcon's core clock-running strategy

a one hull han can no longer receive a full win against a full health soontir, for example, and will be forced to engage (and probably die) instead of derping around the table forcing the opponent to chase after it

the yt-1300 was also wave 2, so it's understandable that it's an archaically designed mess :P

Thats what I am lamenting. It is just too sad that the most iconic ships had to be designed with the least experience and know how. No way around that of course, the game probably wouldn't have taken of had wave 1 been the E-Wing, K-WIng, Punisher and Phantom, but looking back 8 waves in it is a shame.
